Spectral pigeon

A pigeon leaves its mark on a pane of glass as it flaps off to meet its maker

Spectral Pigeon

Mike Metcalf sent us this startling photo. He writes:

"I opened my bedroom blinds at the weekend to find this ghostly image staring back at me: the perfect imprint of a pigeon, which had presumably flown straight into the pane during the night. Perhaps 'ghostly' was the perfect term: later that day, I found the culprit, or victim - a very dead, now half
cat-eaten pigeon lying in the corner of my garden.

Do many animals leave their perfect after-image as they head off into the afterlife?"

I've seen that twice before

Once, years ago, getting into the car on a chilly morning the combination of dew and bird-grease on the driver's side window showed a perfect imprint a small bird with its wings fully outstretched.
More recently when I started a new job everyone in my pod was hot to show me the "pigeon print" on the boardroom window. A pigeon had hit the glass hard enough to leave facial details behind. The image remained there for at least two months.

It happened about a year ago on the glass doors of our patio. The bird was unharmed and flew off. I wasnt able to photograph the image, but it was pretty clear - although not as clear as the one in the picture. You could see the outstretched wings and body shape, but not the face.

Birds do this!

I've seen a dove fly straight into a glass sliding door. It survived but didn't leave an imprint as in this story.

Several years ago, on the Coast to Coast AM website there was a pic posted of a church's glass paned door with a very similar bird mark. That picture is probably still in the photo archive of C2C's webpage by the way.

seen similar

A grouse hit a picture window and left similar well defined imaged. I wonder what exactly it is they're leaving behind that forms the image - dust? Oil from the feathers? both? Something else?

This is very common

Nice photo (particularly the facial detail) but I have seen this twice before on my own windows and when I mentioned it to people at work one other person had also seen it before and bought in a photo of a perfect outline, with outstretched wing-feathers so it looked like a little angel had slammed into the glass!

Years ago I was visiting a friend, and while we drank tea her daughter drew pictures. As the little girl proudly showed us her just-finished drawing of a cat trying to catch a bird we heard the crashing thud of something hitting the living room window.
We went outside and found a bird lying stunned on the ground, and the family's pet cat already only a few feet away, and very interested...
The family's pet hamster had recently gone to Hamster Heaven, so we picked up the bird and put it inside the cage because it wasn't dead or injured that we could see, only stunned.
We kept it in the cage for a few hours where it lay motionless on its side, and then it suddenly came to its senses and jumped up flapping. We took it outside and it flew away.
I don't remember if there was a mark on the window, or even what kind of bird it was. What I thought was remarkable at the time was how the little girl's drawing seemed to come to life - she drew it, and it immediately happened.

Happened to us

Sitting in the living room, we heard a loud thud. There it was on the window, a perfect image of a crow with its wings outstretched. Fortunately the poor thing was only concussed. The image left behind was dust and from the bird on impact. Interesting.
