On 16 October 2003, FT correspondent Josif Boczor bought a kilo of green peppers at the market in his home town, Baia Sprie in Romania. When his wife was washing them, she discovered that one bore two red hearts, one on either side, making it a suitable vegetable for St Valentine's Day.
