Wasn't sure what forum to put this in. While I would never watch America's Got Talent, I saw this clip on my Facebook feed. Looking around the internets I see even magician message baords cant figure it out. Its based on the old yogi sitting on a bench under the robe attached to a stick. But no one seems to be sure how he gets the stick to stand up. I have watched it a few times, still not sure

Fascinating! Doing it on a beach seems to rule out lifting wires. I'm not sure if his big cudgel of a stick is essential or just window dressing. Possibly the stick could lock into some socket on the ground, and then link with a supporting framework under his voluminous nightgown, but again the different locations work against that explanation.

As a physicist, I think Higgs Bosons are involved! Very Happy

I would say that's exactly how it works.

Metal plate under carpet with a hole in it.
Walking stick has a thick steel rod inside it that locks into the hole in the metal plate.
Underneath his robe is a metal framework that attaches to the walking stick and it locks rigid when he pulls up his legs.
He is sufficiently skinny that it doesn't collapse.

You can see a fakir carry off that trick on Grafton Street in Dublin.

May as well add this here:

Illusionist Dynamo 'levitates' on the side of a double decker bus
Illusionist Dynamo wows tourists in Westminster after appearing to levitate on the side of a double decker bus.

He's one of the world's most famous magicians, and Dynamo has performed his latest stunt using a London bus as his prop.

He levitated on the double decker as it drove through London, starting at Millbank and taking in Parliament Square and WestminsterBridge.

I'm amazed H&S allowed it! Shocked

The guardian adds a little more:

It's a publicity stunt for a soft drinks brand, but there's no denying the pictures of the magician Dynamo 'levitating' beside a London bus are certainly intriguing.

His right hand in contact with the bus, but his feet dangling in mid air, the surprised faces of the passengers on board look almost genuine.

But all is certainly not as it seems - there's no 543 London bus for starters, so we can assume the people on board are in on the trick, and the bus could well be rigged. But how does he do his 'levitation' trick? Let's us know what you think in the comments below.

Some of the suggestions are pretty good, and probably explain better the Special Head trick too.

Saw the same trick on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh last year.
