That column is one of my favourites (along with the other Guardian reader-replying ones) and I often respond.
Was going to contribute a serious question about the set-up envisaged by the OP, such as 'Was it a Roman feast scenario, with elderly noblemen and young nubile serving slaves?' which I seem to remember from a fillum or book or something, but thought I might come across as thinking it through too deeply.  |
