You first. It's not nice when it's had a few.

"Is it worth repeating the search function in next to useless"

Shouldn't it be "Is it worth repeating that the search function is next to useless?"

Yes, the search facility on this site is fairly useless - but we're probably stuck with it. Setting up a better one would take time and money. This one is probably the one that came with the phpBB bulletin board software.

While it doesn't help much with actually finding anything, it does at times turn up unintentionally hilarious results. Like, searching for bug-eyed monsters or necromancers and getting politicians instead. Very Happy

Try changing Sort by: to Ascending, (instead of Descending).

I very nearly started a thread like this about a week back when I searched for Walking Dead and the search function not only failed to find the Walking Dead Thread but brought up the threads for Pacific Rim and The Hobbit. Confused

Main reason I didn't was that after I found said thread and posted on it, I couldn't replicate the result I got the first time ie search appeared to work after that so I wondered if I'd just made a gaffe.

If the recentness is a factor, that might explain what was going on there.

Spot on on all counts. phpBB 3.0 would work much, much better altogether - searches, posting would be less glitchy, upgardes would be overnight rather than taking the board down for weeks, I'd be able to set up the subforums properly..

However, despite the fact that an upgrade to 3.0 would cost precisely nothing (it's open source), it would demand that our hosting company do some work. Which would cost money. And Dennis ain't gonna wear that. We've explored moving away to another hosting company (including offers from board members) but seems we're pretty much captive, and stuck with what we have.

But I haven't given up, yet Smile.

I just use Google, and make sure 'Fortean Times' is part of the search criteria - hasn't failed me yet.

Spot on - its bots seems to visit the site every few minutes to update the indexing.

A bit disconcerting at times but someone has seen to it. Confused
