Who do you think the most famous person in the world is right now? One person who anyone from just about anywhere on the planet would have heard of?

Just so we're all clear on the context ... Do you mean any currently living (and hence 'real') person?

Yeah, real, living people.

If we're mentioning the Pope, would the Dalai Lama merit the accolade too?

For global face / name recognition, I suspect the deciding factor would be fame in the developing world.

Barack Obama seems to have a lot of 'star power' in that area, and Queen Elizabeth has been widely known for a long, long time - including in the far-flung corners of the former empire.

... So I'd venture the safest bets would be Obama or the Queen.

If Michael Jackson were still alive I'd suggest him as a third possibility, and the only person from the entertainment field likely to compete with the first two. I can't think of any current entertainment / media celebrity whose fame in the developed world is likely to extend globally.

A decade or two ago I might have considered Muhammad Ali, but he's been effectively retired (and retiring) for so long I'm not sure he's currently more famous than (e.g.) the long-dead Elvis.

Another entertainer / artist that comes to mind is Paul McCartney, but I'm not sure he's as globally famous individually as the Beatles (as a group) probably still are.

The current Pope is new, so I'd rule him out. Not all that long ago John Paul II would have been a serious contender ...

I wouldn't recognise the new pope, but don't you think most Catholics would? And there are quite a lot of them.

I would also, a couple of decades ago, have chosen Mohammed Ali. So I would now suggest Usain Bolt. How can you not be famous being the fastest person in the world!

And agreeing with Enola (who added their post as I was typing), much of the developing world has not heard of, nor cares for Lady Gaga, Jay Z or bottomless wonders who try and make a name by twerking on TV

There is one star who I suspect might compete on the world stage as biggest celeb, even in the developing world: Jackie Chan.

Jackie Chan, Usain Bolt, Mohammed Ali.

All are stars in the two most basic hardwired instincts - Fight or Flee

My belief is that people who are regarded the best at these, i.e. the fastest sprinter or the fighter who wins most battles, are more likely to be world famous than a political or religious leader, or someone who entertains

But like a lot of old folk, she's finding it hard to make ends meet:

Queen down to her last million due to courtiers' overspending, report finds
Report by the Commons public accounts committee finds the Queen’s advisers are failing to control her finances while the royal palaces are “crumbling”
By Steven Swinford, Senior Political Correspondent

The Queen’s household finances were at a “historic low” with just £1 million left in reserve, MPs said on Monday. Her courtiers were advised to take money-saving tips from the Treasury.
