The vaccine that is due to be handed out over the next few months is for the current new swine flu strain (Type A H1N1) and the seasonal flu vaccine is for the other more common flu that comes on every winter. Although the govt isn't certain they think that if the swine flu mutates it will still have a similar structure to the one at the moment so the new vaccine will still have some protection against it.

Interesting thing is, in Australia as winter arrived their numbers of swine flu didn't go up as much as they expected. In fact I think they went down. And I have just come across some new research which suggests that the seasonal flu vaccine may provide a little bit of protection against H1N1 after all:

Quote:
A study published recently in the British Medical Journal suggests that the 2008-9 seasonal flu vaccine may offer some level of cross-protection against the swine flu virus. This is an unexpected finding as it was widely assumed that the annual flu jab would offer no protection, particularly against the severe complications of flu.

So it looks like, if you are vulnerable, it is an even better idea to get both vaccines.

Everyone is on about how cannabioids are helping fight the flu. Its interesting to read not official accounts but what people wrote on forums. Now having done my research purely for selfish reasons [fancy a spliff], I have to say that last friday I had a cannabis brownie and lo and behold on Sunday I was over it, nothing, really well. Then on Monday morning I had a relapse and it came back with a vengeance and is still there. I wonder now if I had kept taking cannabis, could I have avoided feeling ill for so long?
Gut feeling is: yes. So today I'll self medicate and will let you all know what happens maybe we all don't need any expensive government injections after all. Mother nature knows usually best. smokin

I am in two minds myself about having the jab - I'm diabetic, so I'll be one of the first to be offered it - but I'm not entirely sure why this is being forced on us in such a hasty manner. Perhaps I am being overly paranoid...

Offered, not forced. Big difference.

Well, I'm only having doubts because so many health workers are refusing to have it done. They must know something I don't, perhaps.

I was at the doctor's today and the nurse told me everyone at that surgery had their flu jab yesterday. They didn't seem bothered, she was positively cheerful about it.

Asked someone in the NHS why there's low uptake amongst nurses etc for regular flu jabs and the suggestion that they may not take the swine flu jab either, and they said that it was mainly about bravado, being hard enough to struggle on without it: "Stuff and nonsense" etc.

Re the jab, I was under the impression that it used the same technology as the seasonal flu jabs, just used a different strain & as such should be as safe.

'Holy water' machine aims to stem swine flu

Catholic churches in Italy have come up with a novel way to help prevent the spread of swine flu.

Instead of parishioners dipping their hands in traditional fonts, an electronic machine squirts holy water for them.

Duncan Kennedy reports from Rome.

Didn't Archimedes invent those machines? Put a coin in, and it dispenses holy water?

Anyway, got the H1N1 vaccine the other day, only because I'm travelling to the US in January. No-one has been forced, but they do offer it for free.

I was in our local hospital earlier this week where the audiologist I saw proudly pointed out the badge on her lapel declaring her to be a "flu jab hero". She told me that she had had 2 jabs, one for "swine flu" and the other for "regular flu". These had been done one in each arm.

She seemed very pleased with herself and said that she had had the vacine to prevent her giving her father the flu. Just a thought, if you have been vaccinated is it possible for you to carry the virus and so infect others? By this I mean that you may have live virus on your person, on your clothing or hands for instance. Also how long does it take for a vacine to become effective?

Another thought, are there any checks as to the effectiveness of the vacine by seeing if those vaccinated develop the appropriate antibodies?

My understanding is that flu vaccine doesn't use live virus.

I thought that, ttoo, until I got the normal 'flu jab last year...and promptly got the 'flu. That's either one hell of an antigenic response on my part or one of the little buggers was playing possum.
