Soz Yith, just got round to reading this thread.

Same thing happened to me yesterday - have now kicked it upstairs. If it's a lengthy post, I'd advise you copy it into notepad as insurance for the mo. Clipboards can go wonky too.

Thanks. It's a new message for me. I've not seen it before.

Its a new one to me but if I had to guess then I think it is just a glitch in the server. I can't remember specifically but I think this forum stores the terms in your post in the database in a form that makes it easy to search (so it knows pretty quickly where all the words "Charles" and all the words "Fort" are and if you search for "Charles Fort" it can compare the two lists). From the error there seems to have been a problem updating this information. Just a guess mind.

Thanks Emps.

Seeing as how you have some understanding of this - more than me, at least - I have a question. Is this design of message board inherrently unstable, or do errors to an otherwise well-functioning board only occur when someone administering the board actually changes something?

Posters can only send the simplest text with basic formatting, so i can't imagine that that could throw up too many unpredictable results. Could it?

No phpBB is one of the oldest open source PHP-based message boards and should, on the standard installation should be pretty stable (as long as you keep up with the updates but they are usually for security issues, as it is so popular there are always people out there eager to explot them). The problems usually come from the server (most often not being able to connect to the database) or from the interaction of plugins (as phpBB doesn't have all the functions you'd want and you can add it in from third party developers, but then when you update these might not be updated too). Here there is an added layer of problems fitting it into the wider Dennis system but those wrinkles have largely been ironed out (although the having to logout to login problems, which I'm also getting, seem to be coming from this).

But, as I say, most problems seem to come from the server and there is often nothing you can do about them if they are temporary. It is always worth reporting anything that recurs though as we can kick them upstrairs and it should help improve things by increments.

OK then, if you're so clever, answer this - why do I have to keep logging back in? Eh? Eh? Eh?

Wellllll I partially answered that:

I would imagine a cookie has to be set for both the phpBB forum and the site-wide Dennis system, so when you come here the forum thinks the cookie has expired but when you go to log in, the site-wide system thinks you are still logged in, so it won't give you the opportunity to log in. The logout button (which is outside the forum area on the site-wide navigation) logs you out of the Dennis system too, which then gives you the chance to log back into both. Simples. Wink

Summary: You can be logged out of the forum but logged into the site, therefore it won't let you log in. You have to log out of the site to be given the chance to log in, which also logs you into the forum. Try saying that in one breath, form memory. in a public place.

...and when they're out on the pitch they're in, until they're out, at which time they're all in the pavilion. They can't be in the pavilion when the're in because they're in until they're out and can come back in, and when they were up they were up and when they were down they were down, and the offside rule applies.

An excellent summary! Very Happy

However, [smug] I don't have to log in! Cool [/smug]

I switch between pooters and suddenly found the logging in problem cropping up a day or two ago. If I stayed on one perhaps it wouldn't happen. Then I could be smug too. Laughing

If it's Firefox, it's just possible that one set of cookies has been selected, 'Per Session', which means that the Dennis site would have to send new set of cookies every time, hence having to log in, every time too.

I'm beginning to think it's a firefox problem. It's really frustrating.

I get it in Internet Explorer too - I have to logout and login everytime when I use that.

It does seem to be a session issue as "remember me" doesn't.

Hmm.

Well, having temporary swapped to someone else's laptop. With Firefox - perhaps a different version - I have zero problems. It's business as usual...

I just got this again:
Quote:
General Error

Could not insert new word matches

I was trying to post in Conspiracy ('Police State'), so I went to the index to see if my post had registered. I seemed not, so I opened the thread again to re-post, only to find that my post was there..! Confused

A new glitch today:

I wanted to reply to a post, including a quote from it, so I clicked the Quote button (as you do). However I got this message:
Quote:
Sorry, but only can reply to posts in this forum.

That's not even good English, apart from not allowing me to do what I wanted.

Does anyone else get this? It's easy to test - just click the Quote button.
(If you don't actually want to reply, hit Return.)
