Burning diesel destroys fire engine in Tavistock
A £200,000 fire engine has been destroyed by burning diesel during a blaze at a farm in Devon.
The fuel escaped from a ruptured tank during the fire in Collaton Lane in Tavistock early on Sunday.
The burning diesel ran down the lane and ended up underneath a fire engine parked about 20m away, fire crews said.
The fire engine was abandoned as unsafe, although crews were able to move two other fire engines. Six people living near the blaze were evacuated.
Firefighters were called to the farm buildings just after 01:00 GMT.
Two neighbouring homes were evacuated and a 200m exclusion zone was put in place amid fears there are acetylene cylinders inside the buildings.
Firefighters expect the exclusion zone to remain in place for the rest of the day.
Area commander Steve Widnell said: "The severity of the fire caused one of the tanks inside the building to rupture.
"A flow of burning diesel went down the lane and the appliance was in its path.
"Two other appliances were removed but it was too dangerous to move the first one and we took the decision to evacuate the scene rather than risk some of our firefighters."
Investigations into both fires have started.

We just had a power cut - the whole building was affected. I was told the fault had been reported, so in the meantime I decided to go to the local shops. One thing I had to do was charge up the prepayment key for my electicity meter, ironically. But the next irony was getting to the shop and finding it closed because of a power cut!
So back home, but I can't get in - the building has electronic locks on the outside doors, but without power they don't work! I and a neighbour who turned up after me were locked out! (Getting into whinge territory now..!)
Luckily the cleaner was inside, and she saw us and let us in. She also said she'd had phone calls from family - it seems the whole town was affected!
No computer, so I read a book for a while, and then the power came back. On the computer again, but I found I had to log back in to FT...
Now I have to check my website - I spent over an hour editing one page when the power went - will my changes have been preserved in 'the cloud', or have I got to do it all again..?
LATER: I've checked, and the page was just as I left it! Something to be said for this 'cloud' business! I wonder how many times a day my computer talks to San Francisco? |

Local press report on the power cut opens rather strangely:
| Quote: | Massive power loss hits Falmouth, Penryn and Budock
2:20pm Wednesday 13th March 2013 in News
By Emma Ferguson, News Editor
Large swathes of Falmouth, Penryn and Budock Water were left in darkness this lunchtime due to a massive power cut.
This is believed to have been caused by a 33,000-volt transformer catching fire in the area.
It resulted in the complete loss of electricity, telephones and even mobile internet.
Traffic lights in Penryn are also reported to have stopped working.
Falmouth town centre was out briefly, but power returned fairly quickly.
Other outlying areas were left in darkness for around 45 minutes

Darkness?! It was lunchtime on a fine sunny day!
But I've had to review my comment "Something to be said for this 'cloud' business!": the website company yesterday had major server problems, and I may have lost some data, but I haven't checked yet whether they've fixed it. But I've had two long emails from them apologizing, and they're working on it. |

| Nice one, Zilch5. Laugh of the morning for the TV Psychic who had to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances. One wonders whether the people who created some of those signs did it deliberately for a laugh or were just that gormless. |

| I really like the 'Nothing is written in stone' one, but i's not really irony, just an amusing and presumably quite expensive jest. |

The Bosche printing it.
| Quote: | Commando comic printing moves from Suffolk to Germany
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-23004916
Commando, which started in 1961, is now up to issue 4,619
The UK's last surviving war comic has moved its printing from Suffolk to Germany.
Commando, published by Dundee-based DC Thomson since 1961, features heroic tales mainly set in the two world wars where British troops fight the Germans.
Printing of the comic, which used to be carried out by the CPI Group at Ellough in Suffolk has moved to a different firm in east Germany.
DC Thomson said the decision was for "commercial reasons".
"Since the beginning of May, Commando has been printed by St Ives Management Services Ltd at the plant of their sub-contractor, GGP Media GmbH, in Germany," a spokesman said.
"The decision to switch from CPI Group, in Suffolk, followed a comprehensive review of our printing contracts and was made purely for commercial reasons.
"Commando readers will continue to receive the same, top quality product with rich illustrations and exciting storylines."
Four editions of Commando are published each fortnight, each featuring a self-contained story.
The series is up to number 4,619 and the publisher said it has a circulation of 9,600 every fortnight. |

| You have to wonder who reads that kind of comic, certainly not kids I would have thought. |

I remember getting a pile of those Commando comics from my sister's jumble sales when I was a teenager. They were pretty formulaic, but the artwork was generally of a good quality.
Getting it printed in Germany is...a poor idea. |

| Can't see it being popular in Germany - if they are of an age to remember such things, asking your local newsagent for your Commando Order might result in fatal consequences. |
