OK its "that paper" but this is pos. the most believeable report they've had in awhile:

Quote:
Doctors remove a skewer from woman's head

05/04/2005 15:50

Some Russians found it really hard to indulge in the joint celebrations of Russian Easter and the 1st of May holiday. Some people had to face the dire consequences.

A woman showed up at a hospital's emergency room in the city of Perm, in the eastern European part of the Russian Federation, seeking medical attention. The doctors examined the 30-year-old woman and found a "foreign body" i.e. a shish kebab skewer sticking out of her head. She also had an open cranial injury on her head.

After the woman was treated for injuries, she told the doctors that an incident had happened to her while she and her companion were barbecuing in the forest. Her companion accidentally stuck a skewer in her head as he was throwing skewers in a nearby tree. The guy was apparently trying to impress the lady with his adroitness. The police is checking on the circumstances of the case.

Not long ago Pravda has reported about a man with a kitchen knife in the face, which was successfully removed by Russian doctors leaving just a little scar on his cheek.

Those things can be a bitch. I mean when it happens, it could be more risky to remove it than to leave it in there, but over time they move around.

At least he knew about it. The ones where they had no idea how or when they got shot are really freaky.

He was skylarking with mates over a few beers and took what he thought was an empty nail gun and pointed it at his head.
"At hospital the pain got worse, and I was getting frustrated so I asked (nurses) for a pair of pliers to pull it out myself,"

X-Ray at the link. Surprised (I really wish "the voice" would tell more people that they're safe, loved, a child of God/ess, whatever rather than harming themselves or others. )

Oh, like the report they cite at the end, and posted by Emps above, it is also sourced from *that paper*, but I don't see this as being particuraly unbelievable, either.

Russian Man Hammers Nail Into Head After “Hearing Voice”

Created: 08.06.2005 18:12 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 18:22 MSK, 23 hours 12 minutes ago

The resident of a Russian village has hammered a nail into his own head.

While alone at home 37-year-old Yuri Dedov took a hammer and drove a 122-millimeter nail into his forehead all the way down to the nailhead, Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper wrote. When Dedov’s mother came home, she found her son had a fever. Upon seen the nail in his head, she called for an ambulance.

Dedov was taken to hospital and operated on. After the successful operation, he said that he had heard a voice saying “Take a hammer and do it.”

Neurosurgeon Yuri Tanvel, who operated on Dedov, said a piece of iron had almost gone through the latter’s head and stopped near the eyeball. “If its trajectory had been 15 degrees different, he would have died immediately. As it is, no vital function was violated. The main thing is the nail did not reach the brain,” the paper quoted the doctor as saying.

In April, doctors in the Voronezh region pulled a 35 cm knife out of a man’s head who lived to tell the tale. The patient’s friend had plunged the knife into his eye.

Boy Scout survives after knife gets lodged in brain

KTRK

(12/23/05 - KTRK/SALT LAKE CITY, UT) - There was a freak accident in Salt Lake City. A Boy Scout leader saved another scout from falling, but accidentally stabbed him in the brain.

The leader was raking leaves for a Boy Scout event when he tried to catch another scout, Kevin Coulter, who had tripped. But the knife the leader was holding slipped from his hand and stabbed Coulter in the brain.

It was lodged in between his frontal lobes and luckily, it just missed a major blood vessel.

"That's the best spot if you are going to have a knife in your head," said Coulter. "I just felt pressure."

Kevin's been upbeat throughout the accident and his recovery. He even walked away with the knife as a souvenir.

Girl struck in forehead with grilling fork

Associated Press
Dec. 29, 2005 10:30 AM

INDIANAPOLIS - A grilling fork flew off its handle while a boy was playing with it and stuck in his 11-year-old stepsister's forehead, police said.

Megan Butler was listed in critical condition Wednesday in Methodist Hospital, where she was taken by paramedics.

Indianapolis police Sgt. Judy Phillips said the children were playing Wednesday afternoon when the 10-year-old boy began swinging the fork, which had a string attached to its wooden handle.

The two-pronged metal fork came loose from the handle and stuck in the girl's forehead, police said. The girl took a few steps forward, then collapsed, police said.

The boy removed the end of the fork from her forehead and someone else called police. The girl was unconscious when emergency workers arrived. It was not clear how deeply the points penetrated her forehead.

Phillips said the girl's injury was being treated as an accident.

Doctors, spiritualist remove mystery nail from woman’s head… As police link co-wife to her ordeal

By ANDY ASEMOTA, Katsina
Saturday, December 31, 2005

Police in Funtua, Katsina State, have linked a 60-year-old housewife, Rabi, with the misfortune of her co-wife, Adama, now partially paralysed following a six-inch nail, mysteriously driven into her head.

The police say they are working on the suspicion that Rabi – who has since been remanded in prison custody by a Funtua Sharia Court judge - knew about Adama’s travails. But the suspect has vehemently denied any knowledge of what led to her co-wife’s problem.

Hope

However, news of the removal of the nail reportedly seen as a cheery news bringing hope to many that Adama’s worst situation was over.
After the nail was eventually removed, it was learnt, Mrs Ayuba regained her power of speech. Sources revealed that the news of the successful operation was greeted with spontaneous jubilation in Funtua.

Doctors at Usman Danfodio University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, removed the nail early this week after a revered Maiduguri based spiritualist had allegedly broken the power of the witchcraft behind the tragedy.

A relative of the 40-year-old woman told Saturday Sun on Wednesday that the patient would remain in the hospital for about a month.

The man, who simply identified himself as Lawal, said Mrs Ayuba required extensive medical examination since she was said to have started emitting offensive odour before she was taken to Sokoto.

The six other nails allegedly discovered through x-ray in Adama Ayuba’s head were said to have disappeared as mysteriously as they had found their ways into her head.
Tragedy hit the woman about three weeks ago when she woke up to find a huge nail protruding from her head.

Phone call from Sokoto

Some of her relatives and sympathizers who were at her mother’s house when a phone call from Sokoto confirmed the nail had been removed from Adama’s head were said to have insisted on speaking with her in order to dispel their fears completely.

Her brief conversation with some of them on the phone was reportedly cheered and applauded as her trauma was seen to be ending on a happy note.

The traumatised housewife (Adama) was reportedly taken to Sokoto on the instruction of the Maiduguri-based spiritualist, said to be a relative of the unfortunate woman.

Sources revealed that unorthodox priest stopped over in Funtua by sheer providence, as he was en route to Maiduguri from Sokoto when he met Adama lying unconscious.

Several relatives of Adama who witnessed the drama told Saturday Sun that the man escaped with injuries after his encounter with the alleged evil forces responsible for Adama’s ordeal.

Rabi in court

Rabi was arraigned before a Funtua Sharia Court by the police last week for allegedly using “criminal charms” to nail Adama contrary to sections 217 of Penal Law and 394 of Sharia Penal Code of Katsina State.

But, the mother of 10 children denied the charge. The trial judge, Alhaji Saidu Mani Ingawa, remanded the woman in prison custody pending the fate of the victim and fixed February 7th, 2006 for hearing in the case.

The Court heard that following the allegations of one Adamu Shittu, a nephew of the Adama, the suspect could not but be held liable for the offence.

The complainant reportedly informed the police that shortly after her aunt last quarrelled with Rabi, her temperature shot up. Adama was to have lost her senses and the ability to speak immediately she revealed to her nephew and others that she strongly believed that Adama had seriously charmed her through spiritual means.

The Court was told that the six-inch nail protruding from Adama’s head was discovered after some women in the complainant’s house invited a spiritualist to pray for her.

Mother’s Prayer

The shocked mother of the victim, Hajia Hadiza, told Saturday Sun that she prayed that the law would punish Rabi for allegedly being the “nail” in her daughter’s flesh.

Hadiza lamented that Rabi had made good her threat to tarnish her daughter’s good image and cause her irredeemable damage.

She wondered why at 60 years and with 10 children, the accused person would not allow Adama know peace for once in her husband’s house.

The aged women claimed Rabi was convicted last year after she accused Adama of living with HIV AIDs should not be allowed to escape the wrath of the law.

Recalling Rabi’s penchant for malicious verbal and otherwise attack on Adama, she disclosed that a Funtua Court found Rabi guilty following a medical examination that proved the allegation of Rabi as unfounded.

Suspect better off in custody

A police officer told Saturday Sun that the accused person was safer in prison custody than her husband’s house, as mob action against her could not be ruled out.

“Don’t forget many people sympathising with Adama will stop at nothing to lynch Rab”i, he warned. “Who knows what would have happened, if she had remained in their house since the scandal broke out?”

Man Fails to Remember How 10-cm Nail Got in His Head

Created: 12.04.2006 12:50 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 13:37 MSK

MosNews

A man from the Ufa region in western Russia has survived after discovering a 10-cm nail in his head, in an incident separate from the case of a young girl who had a nail driven into her ear two weeks ago, Komsomolskaya Pravda daily reported.

The 40-year-old man discovered a metal dowel sticking out of the top of his head while brushing his hair after a party the previous evening. He told doctors that he had been drinking with his friends and so could not remember anything about how the nail had got there. It did not cause him to panic however, despite the fact that few people survive such traumas.

“Head traumas are often accompanied by amnesia — the victim does not remember how he was injured. Or he may not wish to speak of it for personal reasons,” said neurosurgeon Ildus Saitov, who removed the nail from the man’s head.

The doctor said his patient had been very lucky — the dowel had not broken any major blood vessels or the most important parts of the brain, while strong alcoholic intoxication Saitov believes saved him from going into shock from the pain. The patient left hospital only a couple of days after the operation and is now feeling absolutely normal, he said.

In early April a 17-year old girl from the south Russian city of Taganrog also survived, after a man she met in the street and agreed to have tea with kicked a 10-centimeter long nail into her head. The girl not only survived the attack, but managed to walk 3 kilometers to the nearest police station, though she fainted as she came in.

In August 2005 a 37-year-old Russian villager drove the whole length of a 122-millimeter nail into the back of his head after hearing a voice which told him to perform this act of folly. Although the iron rod had almost gone through the man’s head and stopped near the eyeball, he was also successfully operated on.

With an impressive photo - I can't see how you'd overlook that:

Doc's diagnosis: Nail gun caused headache

12 nails found in the man's skull, he suffered no lasting effects

Saturday, April 22, 2006; Posted: 9:35 a.m. EDT (13:35 GMT)

PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) -- An Oregon man who went to a hospital complaining of a headache was found to have 12 nails embedded in his skull from a suicide attempt with a nail gun, doctors say.

Surgeons removed the nails with needle-nosed pliers and a drill, and the man survived with no serious lasting effects, according to a report on the medical oddity in the current issue of the Journal of Neurosurgery.

The unidentified 33-year-old man was suicidal and high on methamphetamine last year when he fired the nails -- up to 2 inches in length -- into his head one by one.

The nails were not visible when doctors first examined the man in the emergency room of an unidentified Oregon hospital a day later. Doctors were surprised when X-rays revealed six nails clustered between his right eye and ear, two below his right ear and four on the left side of his head. (Watch the X-ray showing the position of a dozen two-inch nails -- 1:43)

The study did not say how long the nails were, and a hospital spokeswoman refused to release that information. A photo published in the study suggests the nails range from 1 1/2 to 2 inches long.

No one before is known to have survived after intentionally firing so many foreign objects into the head, according to the report, written by Dr. G. Alexander West, the neurosurgeon who oversaw the treatment of the patient.

The man at first told doctors he had had a nail gun accident, but later admitted it was a suicide attempt.

The nails came close to major blood vessels and the brain stem but did not pierce them. The patient was in remarkably good condition when he was transferred to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, where the nails were removed.

The patient was later transferred to psychiatric care and stayed under court order for nearly a month before leaving against doctors' orders.

Man fights to keep bullet in head

http://img153.imagevenue.com/loc436/th_90122__42380739_joshua_122_436lo.jpg

A search warrant has been issued in the US for a potentially vital clue to a violent crime - a bullet lodged in a teenager's head.

Texan prosecutors want the bullet, embedded under the skin in 17-year-old Joshua Bush's forehead, to be removed.

They say it could help convict Mr Bush of the attempted murder of a used-car salesman in a row following a robbery.

The case has raised privacy concerns, with Mr Bush's lawyers fighting to have the bullet remain in his head.

In a case seemingly straight out of US television crime series CSI, prosecutors say the 9mm bullet became lodged in the soft fatty tissue in Mr Bush's forehead in a shootout with the car salesman.

Police say Alan Olive returned fire after Mr Bush tried to shoot him.

They say Mr Bush was part of a gang that had tried to take cars from the forecourt.

Identified to police by other gang members, Mr Bush was interviewed.

Mr Olive, a competitive pistol shooter, said a man returned after the police had investigated, threatening to kill him if he gave evidence. The shootout followed.

"I just can't believe I missed him at that distance," Mr Olive says in court papers.

Prosecutor Ramon Rodriguez told Associated Press news agency that Mr Bush "looked like hell. He had a big old knot on his forehead".

Mr Rodriguez said Mr Bush later said he was hit by a stray bullet while on his couch in his flat.

A judge issued a warrant for the bullet's removal in October but a doctor said he did not have the proper tools.

A second operation was ordered for last week at a hospital but that was postponed for unspecified reasons.

Now Mr Bush's lawyers say the removal would be a denial of his civil rights, although the surgery would not be life threatening.

The lawyers base their case on the constitution's protection against unreasonable searches.

Rife Kimler, Mr Bush's lawyer, told AP: "When the medical profession divorces itself from its own responsibility and makes itself an arm of the state, it's a dangerous path."

Woman has pencil in head removed after 55 years

Mon Aug 6, 2007 10:40AM BST

BERLIN (Reuters) - A 59-year-old German woman has had most of a pencil removed from inside her head after suffering nearly her whole life with the headaches and nosebleeds it caused, Bild newspaper reported on Monday.

Margret Wegner fell over carrying the pencil in her hand when she was four.

"The pencil went right through my skin -- and disappeared into my head," Wegner told the newspaper.

It narrowly missed vital parts of her brain.

At the time no one dared operate, but now technology has improved sufficiently for doctors to be able to remove it.

The majority of the pencil, some 8 cm (3.1 inches) long, was taken out in an operation at a private Berlin clinic, but the 2 cm tip had grown in so firmly that it was impossible to remove.

X-ray shows knife stuck in skull

A 17-year-old youth has been found guilty of attempted murder after stabbing a boy in the head with a kitchen knife.

The 16-year-old boy was critically injured during a failed street robbery near a bus stop in Walworth, south London, Inner London Crown Court heard.

He was taken to hospital with the knife still stuck in his forehead. Police released an X-ray image of the injury.

The defendant, who denied the charge, will be sentenced later this month.

He had targeted the boy outside Tesco on Old Kent Road last November when friends of the boy tried to stop him.

DNA traces

Three of the intended victim's friends stepped in and were stabbed. One suffered a chest wound and another minor injuries to his shoulder. Both have recovered.

The defendant was seen running away, but dropped his hat and mobile phone at the scene.

Forensic experts identified the attacker from DNA traces left inside the hat and he was arrested at home several days later.

The boy stabbed in the head has since recovered and although he requires regular hospital checks, it is believed he has started college.

"Anyone who carries a knife, risks a heavy jail sentence," said Det Con Scott Albert. "The defendant has affected four lives, including his own."

The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was also convicted of grievous bodily harm.

How some of them never knew about the objects inside them is a miracle.

Man did not notice nail in brain

A US teenager's survival after a spear was shot through his brain is a miracle, doctors say.

Yasser Lopez, 16, is recovering after he was accidentally hit with a spear gun by a friend during a Florida fishing trip this month.

Medics at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami said the 3ft (90cm) projectile entered his brain over his right eye and went out the back of his head.

He is now out of bed and speaking following a three-hour operation.

Medics said he was awake as he arrived at hospital, and became "agitated".

After sedating the teenager, part of the stainless steel spear had to be severed with a mechanical cutter so he could fit into the CT scanner.

Yasser Lopez's brain scan after surgery to remove the spear
Doctors said the teenager has no memory of the freak accident.

He was shot with the projectile as he swam in a lake near his Miami area home on 8 June when his friend set off the trigger of a spear gun he was loading.

While medics are not sure of the extent of the damage to his memory and other parts of the brain, they say his condition could have been much worse.

"It's a miracle the spear missed all the main blood vessels of the brain," neurosurgeon Ross Bullock told reporters.

Also helpful, doctors say, was the foreign object's trajectory into the right side of the brain, Mr Lopez's non-dominant lobe, missing the parts responsible for speech and other important functions.
