Ghostly posting on message boards...

http://www.birminghamuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=386

Someone's obviously having a laugh with this but a) it's quite a good story and b) it made me wonder - if you can contact the dead via a oija board, why not a message board?

My first post btw, so hello.

This is very strange. Apparently you have a lot of time to type when you are dead!

The ghost shares his name with a classical actor Michael Pennington. Interestingly there is also a church of St Michael Pennington:

http://www.lancashirechurches.co.uk/Pennington,%20St%20Michael,%20directory.jpg

I note there is a website with coroborative "evidence on it", but this is a single page and would be easy to set up.

http://www.angelfire.com/folk/pennington/

I would like to know haw this developes - could it be an elaborate charade in order to spring some piece of infromation on the world?

Could it be a Blair witch project kind of promo? I'm intrigued.

You have to be yanking my crank!

Well, that puts Spiritualists and mediums out of a job ... just set up a laptop in a haunted location, let some geek surf the net and get your answers.

I'm sorry, did I give the impression that I am a corporeal entity?

Philo T could be the Ghost in the Machine....or one of the Artificial Intellegences that has evolved or emerged as the internet reached a high level of complexity. How could we tell? Wink

The story that started this thread's a bit of wind-up, but it's quite well done as a techno-twist on the type of story where the narrator is dead.

Good find RationalRed, and Hi.

We need a new turing-type test.

Not that we ever really got the hang of the original!

Hmm - WRT that thread, methinks some people are going to go away somewhat taller after all of the leg-pulling has finished... Very Happy

The "Ghost" also shares his name with 95 Michael Penningtons in the Electoral Role 2002.Source - Here

None of which appear to be Bulletin Board Banshees...

If he had called himself Michael Langdon however - then i would have believed him;)

It's also the real name of Johnny Vegas!

What a tale! I love it!

Ok, I don't mean to drag this too far offtopic, but as William Gibson wrote in "Mona Lisa Overdrive":
Quote:
"Hoodoos. Thought the matrix was full of mambos 'n' shit. Wanna know something, Moll?"

"What?"

"They're right."

I mean, how could one really tell where these electronically mediated messages are really coming from? We've already had one haunted computer story I can think of.

Granted, only an infitesimal part of man's knowledge is currently online, but it's already a huge chunk of data. Add to that hundreds/thousands/millions of programs spidering around in it -- it's quite possible we'll see some emergent behavior even if we're not intentionally trying to build a big brain.

Of course, it would seem that it would take a lot less energy for a spirit to influence a computer to spit out some characters than to throw chairs around the room. Are there any "EVP" researchers looking into such a possibility?
