Chinese toddler dies after parking space row
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-23475587

A Chinese toddler has died in a Beijing hospital after being wounded during a row between her mother and a man over a parking space, state media report.

They say the two-year-old girl suffered critical injuries on Tuesday when the man pulled her out of her pram and threw her to the ground.

He also reportedly beat the mother who had refused to make way for his car, while she was attending her daughter.

The driver was arrested. He could face execution if he is tried for murder.

Police also detained a second man in the case, who was allegedly a passenger in the car and helped beat up the woman.

The toddler died on Thursday night after being kept alive on a respirator, Chinese state media said on Saturday.

The assault happened when a man, identified only by his surname Han, wanted to park his car by a bus stop in Beijing.

But the toddler's mother was standing in the parking spot and refused to move her pram.

The driver got out of his car and hit the woman before removing her daughter from the pram and throwing her forcefully to the ground, an eyewitness is quoted as saying.

"The baby made no noises after being dropped, not even a cry of pain," the Beijing Times quoted him as saying.

Teenage kidnapper ‘called the FBI almost daily’ while holding woman as sex slave
http://rt.com/usa/fbi-sex-slave-teenager-687/

image from Facebookimage from Facebook

Bizarre details continue to emerge following the escape of a kidnapped woman who was allegedly held as a sex slave by a New York teenager. According to new reports, the woman’s captor made almost daily phone calls to the FBI.

Brandon Todd, 19, was arrested on July 10 and charged with the kidnapping of an unidentified woman. Todd reportedly met the woman on a cross-country bus, as the two traveled from Florida to San Diego.

Once they arrived at their destination, Todd suggested they stay in a hotel together.

Todd made clear his intentions to kidnap the woman, telling her that he was affiliated with a gang and would have her tracked down if she attempted to escape. After several days, Todd forced the woman to travel with him on another bus to Rochester, New York, threatening to kill the victim’s parents if she resisted.

When the pair arrived in Rochester, Todd’s grandfather picked them up and drove them to his home, where the 19-year-old lived.

According to an affidavit, the grandfather "would not talk to [the victim], would not look her in the eye, and did not seem to care that she was there.”

But then, the story takes an even stranger turn – during the woman’s two-week stay in the home, Todd made almost daily calls to federal agents.

Court documents say the teenager began making phone calls to the FBI – the majority of which were received by Agent Barry Crouch. Todd informed the agency that “he was involved in human sex trafficking” and had recently “recruited” a victim.

"Todd stated that the reason he was calling the FBI was that he had recruited a certain woman, started to have personal feelings for her, and decided he did not want her involved with the trafficking," Crouch wrote.

Disturbing details of the woman’s captivity, as explained in the affidavit, include physical abuse and sleep deprivation. Todd allegedly forced his victim into sex several times per day and injured her using a belt and heavy boots.

In the move that eventually saved her, the woman faked an asthma attack so she could be admitted into the hospital. She took that opportunity to call her boyfriend, and the two then escaped to Florida together.

After her escape, Todd contacted federal agents “hoping the FBI would assist him in locating the woman," Crouch wrote.

According to the agent, the woman had heard Todd speaking with Crouch on the phone stating that he was “working with the feds.” The false information made the victim question whether she should file a police report.

The FBI declined to respond to repeated phone calls from ABC News.

The affidavit was filed by Crouch on July 9, and Todd was arrested the following day on charges of kidnapping across state lines – a charge that carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Todd appeared in a US District Court in Rochester on July 22, at which point he requested a private attorney. He has not yet entered a plea, and no new court date has been set.

I don't think this case has had much attention

The report of the murder in January states that a white teenager was thought to be the attacker. Sad

The random killing and the plea of insanity

Killer was "Telepathically Abused" by his Victim.

Woman arrested after green paint found on organ at National Cathedral

A wave of vandalism continued to mar some of Washington’s more popular landmarks Monday with at least three more attractions spattered with green paint, and authorities announced the arrest of a woman near one of the incidents at Washington National Cathedral.

The latest crimes occurred three days after the Lincoln Memorial was hit in similar fashion. On Monday, the light-green paint was discovered on an organ in the cathedral’s Bethlehem Chapel, in the cathedral’s Children’s Chapel and on the granite base of a statue next to the Smithsonian Castle on the Mall.

D.C. police said Monday evening that they had charged Jiamei Tian, 58, whom they believe to be homeless, with one count of defacing property.

The mysterious markings on the statue of Abraham Lincoln blemished one of the country’s most visited attractions and an iconic symbol of freedom. In the cathedral, they tarnished what is widely known as the nation’s house of worship — and a building still under repair after an earthquake two years ago caused such severe damage that it closed for three months.

I presume he made it or got someone to do so. Largest available online is 23" tall. Surprised there is a demand for them.

Venezuela's Maduro pledges action on women's hair thieves

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has called on the police to act against gangs that are stealing women's hair.
The thieves sell the hair - sometimes stolen at gunpoint - to salons where it is used for extensions and wigs.
Attacks appear to be on the rise, especially in the country's second largest city Maracaibo, local media report.

Mr Maduro used strong language against what he called "mafias that cut girls' hair".
Speaking at the inauguration of a train station in the capital Caracas, he said the government
would guarantee that the thieves would be caught.

Several women have reportedly been targeted, being asked to tie their hair into ponytails
so that gang members can easily cut it off.
However, the BBC's Irene Caselli in Venezuela says authorities are yet to receive any formal complaints.
One victim told a local newspaper that she refused to report the case to the police because she feared being teased.

Kendra McKenzie Gill, Utah Beauty Queen, Steps Down Amid Bomb Charges

SALT LAKE CITY -- A Utah beauty pageant winner charged last week with tossing homemade "bottle bombs" from a vehicle said she is relinquishing her crown.

Kendra McKenzie Gill, 18, called the Aug. 2 incident a "stupid mistake" and said she wanted to turn over her Miss Riverton title before pageant officials stripped her of it.

"I just thought that it would be best for the city of Riverton and all the people affected by our decision and my choice, to just step down and resign from my position and let someone else take it from here," Gill said in an interview aired Tuesday on KSL-TV (http://bit.ly/16PCCsI).

Gill and three friends – John Patrick Reagh, Shanna Marie Smith and Bryce Christopher Stone, all 18 – were charged Friday with four felony counts of possession of an explosive device. They're accused of driving around town and throwing plastic bottles filled with toilet bowl cleaner and shrapnel at people and property.

Nobody was injured, and Gill told KSL they never threw the bottles directly at people.

"We didn't think about what we were doing at the time," Gill said. "We didn't know that it would get to this point. We meant for it to be a practical joke and never had any intentions to harm anyone at all."

Gill topped a slate of nine beauty contestants in June in the Salt Lake City suburb, showing off years of piano training with a Scott Joplin number and taking home a $2,000 scholarship.

Contestants in the pageant – which is a preliminary of the Miss Utah and Miss America competitions – are required to sign a contract certifying they have not been convicted of a crime and don't have criminal charges pending against them. Pageant officials can revoke a title if a contestant is criminally charged during her reign.

Gill's lawyer, Wally Bugden, described the four teens as honor students who were playing a prank and didn't intend harm. Gill is getting a harder time because of her title, he said.

"Kendra is a lovely person who became Miss Riverton, and now it's being almost held against her that she held that title, and that she did something that was foolish," Bugden said.

Rockefeller imposter Christian Gerhartsreiter jailed

Christian Gerhartsreiter: "I want to assert my innocence... I did not commit the crime of which I stand accused"
r
'Rockefeller' kidnapper is jailed
A German man who pretended to be an heir to the Rockefeller oil fortune has been jailed for killing his California landlady's adult son in 1985.

Christian Gerhartsreiter, 52, was sentenced to 27 years to life in prison at a Los Angeles federal court.

He had been living in Los Angeles under a false name when he murdered John Sohus, 27, whose bones were later dug up at the house.

Sohus' wife Linda, 29, also vanished. No trace of her has ever been found.

In April, a jury found Gerhartsreiter guilty of first-degree murder with malicious intent and of using a blunt object as a deadly and dangerous weapon to kill.

They took less than six hours to convict him.

False identities
Gerhartsreiter proclaimed his innocence as he was sentenced on Thursday, accusing Linda Sohus of the killing.

"I want to assert my innocence and that I firmly believe that the victim's wife killed the victim, but be that as it may, once again, I did not commit the crime," he told the court, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Gerhartsreiter had defended himself after firing his lawyers.

After the killing, he fled to the East Coast in his victim's pickup truck, changing his name a number of times.

During his time evading justice, Gerhartsreiter - who came to the US more than 30 years ago - masqueraded as a Hollywood producer, a Wall Street financier and an English aristocrat.

Witnesses testified at the trial about the stranger who befriended church members who invited him into their homes.

He pretended to be Clark Rockefeller and even got married, fooling his wife for 12 years.

But the ruse was exposed after his 2009 conviction for abducting his daughter in Boston, Massachusetts, during a custody dispute. That conviction prompted investigators to re-examine the California case.

His former defence lawyer, Jeffrey Denner, said that Gerhartsreiter probably was his own worst enemy.

"The way he went through life deceiving people did not make him very likable to the jury," Mr Denner said. "But that doesn't make him a killer."

Brazen thief walks out of St Ives gallery with valuable sculpture
5:00pm Friday 16th August 2013 in News

Police are appealing for help to trace a unique bronze scuplture stolen from
a gallery in St Ives.
The abstract sculpture, entitled Kaimos Creature (2007), was on display on a plinth in Porthminster Gallery in the town.
An offender entered the gallery on August 9, picked up the sculpture worth
around £3,400 and walked out with it.

Police would like to speak to anyone who may have seen the offender
carrying the stolen artwork in the street between 10am and 11am.
PC Jon Dash, based at Penzance, said: “This sculpture was taken in broad
daylight and the person would have had to walk it though the street to waiting transport.
They would have had to be fairly strong to carry the sculpture on their own.”

Police would also like to hear from anyone who may have been offered the
sculpture for sale, including antique shops, galleries and metal dealers.
It is made of bronze and is 25cms tall and 64cms long.
