Romanian princess among 18 charged in US over cockfighting
Daughter of exiled former King Michael denies charges

Irina Walker (60), was among 18 people charged with holding 10 cockfighting ‘derbies’ in 2012 and 2013

A Romanian princess, the daughter of exiled former King Michael, appeared in a US court yesterday with her American husband on charges related to cockfighting in rural Oregon, authorities said.

Irina Walker (60), was among 18 people charged with holding 10 cockfighting “derbies” in 2012 and 2013, according to the indictment filed in federal district court in Oregon. She has denied the charges.

A woman reached by phone at the Romanian Embassy in Washington, DC, who declined to be identified, said the mission had been informed that a daughter of King Michael had been arrested in Oregon.

“She was born in Switzerland, ” the woman said. “We don’t really have a lot of information on her.”

The exiled king, who was forced to abdicate in 1947 after the communist government threatened to kill 1,000 prisoners unless he resigned. He then went into exile with his wife and five daughters to Switzerland and Britain, where the royal couple still resides.

He said in a statement that he had learned of his daughter’s arrest with “profound sadness.”

“His Majesty and the entire royal family hope that the American justice system and the courts of the state of Oregon will solve this case in the fairest and quickest way possible,” the statement said, according to an NBC news website.

Princess Irina is the third of five daughters of the Romanian king and is married to John Wesley Walker, a former Coos County sheriff’s deputy, the Oregonian newspaper reported. She moved to Oregon in 1983 and married Mr Walker in 2007, the paper reported.

Of the 18 people charged in the case, six including the Walkers are charged with operating an illegal gambling business. All 18 are charged with conspiracy and violating the Animal Welfare Act by conducting unlawful animal fighting ventures on the 10 occasions.

Calling cockfighting barbaric, the US Attorney for the District of Oregon, Amanda Marshall, said in a statement “cockfighting jeopardises public health and safety and facilitates the commission of other criminal acts.”
Each of the 12 counts carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

If convicted, the Walkers could also have to forfeit their ranch in Irrigon, Oregon, according to the Justice Department announcement.

Just heard about this on the BBC news but can't find a BBC link for it, just a slightly hysterical Daily Mail one -

50 cockroaches posted through tea shop door

Quote:
They are believed to have been the Madagascan hissing variety, which can grow to three inches long and move very fast.

The attack happened less than two weeks after business partners Diane Bryant and Magda Wencel opened the Teapot tea shop in Cookham, on the banks of the Thames in Berkshire.

The pair have no idea who is to blame, but one line of inquiry is that it could have been a business rival.

According to the BBC, Cookham is the second richest village in England or something.

Young Chinese boy's eyes gouged out in attack
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-23846633

A boy lies on his hospital bed with his eyes covered with bandages as his mother sits next to him at a hospital in Taiyuan, northern China's Shanxi province on 27 August

The little boy is out of danger and is now recovering in hospital
Police in China have offered a reward for information leading to the arrest of a woman suspected of gouging out a six-year-old boy's eyes.

The attack happened in Fenxi, Shanxi province, on 24 August.

The boy went out to play and hours later was found by his parents with his eyes removed and covered in blood.

The boy is now recovering in hospital. Police have offered a reward of 100,000 yuan ($16,340, £10,500) for information linked to the case.

Uncle of boy
"The boy was lured by an unknown woman on Saturday evening into a field, where she gouged out his eyes," state news agency Xinhua reported.

The boy's parents are said to be farmers. His mother said her son told them he was walking outside when a woman attacked him, state media reported.

Police found the boy's eyeballs at the scene. Local reports initially said the corneas were missing, potentially pointing towards organ trafficking.

Police now say, however, that the corneas were not missing and they have yet to establish a motive for the attack.

"We are still working on it so we cannot offer any comment or make any assumption on the motives," a police officer in Fenxi told the AFP news agency.

The boy was initially taken to a local hospital but was transferred to Shanxi Eye Hospital in the provincial capital, Taiyuan, on Sunday.

Local television footage showed family members trying to comfort the heavily-bandaged child.

"We had no disputes with anybody," state news agency Xinhua reported quoted his mother as saying.

Doctors at the hospital say his condition is stable but he will be blind for life.

"He asks why the sky is always dark... and why the dawn still hasn't come," Beijing Youth Daily quoted an uncle of the boy as saying.

"We could only tell him that his eyes had some injury and have to be bandaged.

"It is such a difficult question to explain to him. It is the most heartbreaking thing."

Utah woman pleads guilty in "telepathic rape" case

The Centerville woman accused of convincing her husband to shoot their neighbor for “telepathically raping” her has pleaded guilty.

At a Thursday pretrial conference, Meloney Selleneit pleaded guilty but mentally ill to charges of attempted criminal solicitation and possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, according to court documents.

On Oct. 30, 2011, Selleneit’s husband, Michael Selleneit, shot neighbor Tony Pierce in the back two times with a handgun.

Meloney Selleneit had convinced her husband that Pierce had telepathically raped her on many occasions, court documents said.

After several evaluations over whether Michael Selleneit was competent enough to stand trial, Judge Thomas Kay ruled he was, according to court documents.

In January, Michael Selleneit pleaded guilty to charges of attempted murder and possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person. In May, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison, with his commitment to begin at the Utah State Hospital, according to court documents.

A similar debate over whether Meloney Selleneit should stand trial ended after multiple evaluations, and Judge Kay ruled that she was also competent. She was previously staying at the Utah State Hospital for treatment.

She now awaits a sentencing hearing set for Oct. 31.

According to an arrest warrant, Meloney Selleneit bought the handgun for her husband 11 years ago. The couple kept the gun under a pillow on their bed.

A representative from the Davis County Attorney’s Office was not available to comment on the case Monday.

Chinese toddler dies after parking space row

A Chinese toddler has died in a Beijing hospital after being wounded during a row between her mother and a man over a parking space, state media report.

They say the two-year-old girl suffered critical injuries on Tuesday when the man pulled her out of her pram and threw her to the ground.

A court in China has sentenced a man to death for killing a two-year-old girl in Beijing over a parking space row, state media report.

Han Lei, 39, pulled the toddler out of her pram and threw her to the ground after her mother refused to make way for his car in July.

He fled the scene but was captured. The girl later died from her injuries.

He said the killing was unintentional, as he was drunk and had thought the pram was a shopping trolley.

"I did not know there was an infant inside," he previously said.

The case has provoked an outcry in China, with many people expressing their anger online, state media reported.

Many in China were shocked that an argument over a parking space could come to such a violent end, says the BBC's Martin Patience in Beijing.

The trial started on 16 September at the Beijing No 1 Intermediate People's Court.

Prosecutors had recommended the death sentence for Han, who committed the crime within a year of being released from prison, the Xinhua news agency said.

Han also beat the girl's mother during the altercation in Beijing's Daxing district.

Another man, Li Ming, who drove Han away from the scene, has been jailed for five years.

Supermarket thief’s loose onion scam ends in tears
A debt-ridden former international hockey player stole up to £450 in groceries by scanning all his items as "loose onions" at the self-service checkout in Sainsbury's.
By Telegraph reporters
2:54PM BST 30 Sep 2013

City recruitment consultant Nicholas Long, 25, stole up to £450 after he used the same ruse 20 times in the space of just three months. But he was rumbled when a security guard noticed Long was scanning in every item as loose onions - despite them not even being available to buy at the store.

Long, who played Under 19 hockey internationally, came up with the scam when he feared losing his job and his then-girlfriend fell pregnant, the court heard.
He was also saddled with a £10,000 loan from his father's failed building firm.

Long was caught trying to get away cheaply with a £22 shop on August 7, and confessed to having repeatedly conned the store, in Lombard Street, central London.
"It is a straight forward allegation that he went to Sainsbury's and was seen scanning various items in at the self-service checkout", said prosecutor Denise Murrin.
"All items were being scanned as loose onions, but the store does not sell loose onions. It was an inexpensive way of doing his shopping."

Ms Murrin said Long was not a first-time thief, having previous convictions for shoplifting in 2010 and 2011.
He had been caught lifting a coat from John Lewis and tried to pass a bottle of champagne off as bleach to buy it on the cheap in 2011.
Long had also in 2012 been caught stealing a mobile phone from a handbag at a private party.

Angus Mathieson, representing Long, admitted he had been "stupid" but was driven by mounting debts and the fear of losing his job.
"It was a stupid thing he has done", he said.
"He was not getting a stupid amount, not substituting champagne or anything like that, but just getting an avocado and claiming it was an onion.

"He had got a good job at the time, but committed an offence as he felt his job was under threat and he was imminently likely to be made redundant.
"His girlfriend had become pregnant and he was worried about money, because in addition he had debts.
"Part of the debts had arisen because he had taken a bank loan out for his father, who is in the business trade and needed money to help his business along.
"He took out a £10,000 loan, but unfortunately his father's business failed and he was saddled with the debt."

Mr Mathieson said Long was not a 'manipulating and calculating thief', and said he continues to use his hockey experience by voluntarily training young players on the weekend.

But Judge Paul Worsley QC dubbed Long a 'persistent thief' and warned him he was on the edge of a prison sentence.
"Stealing from a supermarket is always serious, it pushes up the cost of goods up for honest members of the public who have to pay to cover the cost of those goods lost through dishonesty", he said.

"You are an otherwise respectable young man who achieved international honours in hockey, so it is sad to see you before the courts.
"But if you persist in taking other people's property, whether a large organisation like Sainsbury's or individual's, you will have to go to prison."

Long was sentenced to 180-hours community service, to be completed within a year, and ordered to pay £250 costs.
Long, of Chatham, Kent, admitted a single rolled-up count of fraud by false representation.

Crocodile sculpture stolen from Edinburgh gardens
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-24402577

Fibreglass crocodile

The crocodile was filled with sand and weighed around 180 kilos to make it difficult to move him

Police are investigating the theft of a 12ft fibreglass crocodile from an Edinburgh square.

The sculpture is believed to have been stolen from the gardens in the centre of St Andrew Square between 14:00 on Thursday and 08:00 on Friday.

It is owned by the National Library of Scotland.

It is believed to have been removed via the west gate of the gardens and onto George Street. Police are appealing for witnesses.

The crocodile was St Andrew Square to promote the National Library of Scotland's current exhibition celebrating the African adventures of the explorer David Livingstone.

The life-size replica has been named Davy by staff. They are now very keen to get him back.

180 kilos
Darryl Mead, National Library of Scotland's deputy national librarian, said: "Davy has proved a popular attraction in the gardens since he moved in three weeks ago.

"We suspect he may have been taken as a prank late at night and we appeal for his safe return."

The crocodile was filled with sand and weighed around 180 kilos to make it difficult to move him.

The sand was removed before he was taken which would have taken some time and it would still have needed at least two people to carry him off, said police.

He went missing when the garden's gate were closed to the public.

PC Caireen Stewart, of Police Scotland, said: "This crocodile is the property of the National Library of Scotland and is very unique.

"Due to its size, it is believed that someone may have seen something regarding its disappearance."

Mendel Epstein and Martin Wolmark 'plotted to torture husband'
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-24485128

An FBI agent stands guard as evidence sits in the trunk of a vehicle at the Brooklyn residence of Rabbi Mendel Epstein during an investigation, 10 October 2013

FBI agents raided several locations in two states overnight

Two New Jersey rabbis have been arrested and charged with plotting to kidnap and torture a man to force him to grant a traditional Jewish divorce.

Rabbis Mendel Epstein and Martin Wolmark asked for more than $50,000 (£32,000) to hire "tough guys" to attack a recalcitrant husband with cattle prods, authorities said.

The men and eight other suspects appeared in federal court on Thursday.

Under Orthodox Jewish belief, a husband must grant permission for a divorce.

The permission comes in the form of a document known as a get.

In some Orthodox communities a woman who has not obtained a get may not marry again even if a civil divorce is finalised.

She may sue in rabbinical court, but some men ignore an unfavourable ruling, even if it means being estranged from the religious community.

'Crazy affair'
The FBI investigation took place in Ocean and Middlesex counties in New Jersey and Rockland County in New York, and involved raids in both states, according to agency officials.

Two undercover FBI agents posing as a woman seeking a divorce and her brother called Rabbi Wolmark for help, and he connected them to Rabbi Epstein, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court in New Jersey.

The undercover agents videotaped their meeting.

"Basically, what we are going to be doing is kidnapping a guy for a couple of hours and beating him up and torturing him and then getting him to give the get," Rabbi Epstein is quoted as saying during the conversation, according to the complaint.

He added that the "tough guys" would use electric cattle prods and handcuffs and place a plastic bag over the man's head, according to the complaint.

'For the money'
Rabbi Epstein also allegedly told the undercover agents that such instruments were unlikely to leave a mark, avoiding attention from authorities.

"Basically the reaction of the police is, if the guy does not have a mark on him then, uh, is there some Jewish crazy affair here, they don't want to get involved," he said, according to the criminal complaint.

The FBI said the price was more than $50,000, including $10,000 for a rabbinical court to approve the action. They had wired $20,000 to the accused before the arrests.

"They did it for money," Assistant US Attorney Joseph Gribko said during a hearing on Thursday.

"They didn't do it out of religious conviction."

Rabbi Wolmark's lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, argued his client was caught up in a case where religious law involving "an old tradition" collided with federal statutes.

No pleas were entered for the suspects, and all ten have been ordered held in federal custody until a hearing currently scheduled for next week.

Inquest into death of Ibrahim Youseuf, 42, will be opened today
5:00am Tuesday 15th October 2013 in News
By Will Frampton .

SHOCKED locals have paid tribute to murder victim Ibrahim Youseuf as police confirm they are linking the murder of the Bournemouth man to a fatal crash in Wiltshire last week.

In a statement yesterday, Dorset Police said that Mr Youseuf, 42, thought to be the owner of the Five Star Car Wash close to the alleged crime scene in Gloucester Road, was the victim.
The car wash has been closed since police descended on the house, which has been converted into flats, on Friday lunchtime.

Roy Humby, who lives next door to the flat where Mr Youseuf, who is thought to originally be from northern Iraq, was found, said he last saw him on Wednesday last week.

Mr Humby added: “He was a first class bloke. He had the business for five or six years and built it up from nothing really. I came back here (on Friday) and there were three or four police there and a couple of cars and I didn’t realise it was this serious.

“He was a friend; I gave him some help setting up the business. He was a really hard worker; he brightened up this end of the road to be honest. He became a British citizen a couple of years ago and was very proud of it.
“He made a very decent business of it and was the sort of person we could do with more of.”

Mr Youseuf was named yesterday after efforts to track down his next of kin, who, it is believed, live abroad.
The house remained sealed off yesterday, with Dorset Police scientific investigation officers working inside.

Elaine from the Mysterious Tea Shop near the car wash, said: “It is a real shock, and very sad for all of us, we look after each other along here.
“He was a lovely friendly character; he wore colourful clothes and had the personality to match.
“He was ever so nice to me and helped me out often, and we used to share a lot of customers, and they always praised his work.”

Karen Kia, of Bourne & Co, added: “It is a horrible thing to happen. He was a very hard working guy and put everything into his job.”

Detective Inspector Marcus Hester, of the Dorset Police Major Crime Team, said: “Our investigation into this murder is progressing and the deceased is believed to be the owner of the Five Star Car Wash on Gloucester Road.

“As a result of our enquiries I can confirm we are linking this murder to a fatal road traffic collision that occurred in Wiltshire at approximately 6.15am on Friday October 11, 2013.
“We are currently liaising closely with Wiltshire Police in relation to this.

“The details of the deceased from the road traffic collision are currently unknown and we are attempting to identify the driver and contact the next of kin.
“I am appealing for anyone who may have witnessed or heard an argument between 8pm and 8.30pm on Thursday 10 October 2013 in the area of 5 Gloucester Road in Boscombe, or anyone with any information about who is responsible to contact Dorset Police as soon as possible.

I would like to reassure the community that this appears to be an isolated incident and that both the deceased were known to each other.

“All calls will be treated in the strictest of confidence.”

The coroner is aware and an inquest will be opened into the death this morning.
Next of kin have been informed and formal identification has taken place.

Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police in confidence on 101 quoting incident number 11:46 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Boscombe murder linked to Trowbridge fatal car crash

The victim of a fatal car crash had murdered a man a few hours earlier, police have confirmed.
Detectives investigating the death of Ibrahim Youseuf in Boscombe, Dorset, say there is forensic evidence linking it to the crash in Wiltshire.
The collision on the A350 in Trowbridge at 06:20 BST on Friday killed a man known to Mr Youseuf.

Mr Youseuf, who owned a nearby car wash, was found on Friday at a building in Gloucester Road at 12:30 BST.
An inquest into his death has been opened and adjourned. It confirmed he died from stab wounds and head injuries.
The car driver has not yet been named.

Det Insp Marcus Hester from Dorset Police said: "We can confirm the car driver was involved in the attack on Mr Youseuf.
"We are not looking for anyone else in connection with his murder.

"But, we are appealing for witnesses, specifically around last Thursday evening between 20:00 and 20:30 BST, when we are aware an argument took place in the flat within the premises in Gloucester Road.

"We're also keen to hear from anyone who can give us information about Mr Youseuf himself. His interaction with people, his friends, his employees and how he ran his business."
Mr Youseuf owned the Five Star Car Wash in Gloucester Road.

Beheaded mute swans 'killed intentionally' in Cornwall

Four mute swans which were found beheaded in Cornwall are believed to have been killed intentionally, police have said.
The birds were found in Restronguet Creek, near Devoran.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said it was unclear if two more dead birds in an inaccessible part of the site were also beheaded.
He said the swans, which were from a protected species, were in "various states of decomposition".

The birds are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
PC Paul Freestone said: "At this time we have no way of knowing how these swans died."
He added the fact the birds had their heads removed had led officers to believe their deaths were not accidental.
