Cadbury 'sorry' over chocolate bar moth

CADBURY apologised and promised a full investigation yesterday after a Yorkshire schoolboy said he found a moth in one of his favourite chocolate bars.
Cameron Murray, 11, says that he had already eaten a large chunk of the Cadbury Dairy Milk bar before spotting the insect imprinted on the bottom of it.
The youngster, of Barlby, near Selby, immediately ran to tell his mother, Sarah, 37 – complaining he felt "sick" after eating half of the bar that he had been saving from his Christmas selection box.
He said: "When I saw the bug I thought I was going to be sick. I was just hoping that I had not eaten any of it."
His mother said she has reported the incident to consumer watchdogs.
She said: "I was on the phone when he came into the room and said there was a bug in his chocolate bar.
"He started drinking loads of water. He told me he had eaten a bug and I thought he was having me on. But when I took the bar off him I saw it. It was imprinted on the underside of the chocolate bar.
"It looked like a moth you would see in a display cabinet, with its wings outstretched. It is about the size of a thumbnail. I thought it was disgusting. It really is horrible thinking bugs are in your food."
Cameron had kept the selection box, a Christmas gift, in the fridge and had saved his favourite Dairy Milk as a treat.
A Cadbury spokesman said: "We are sorry to hear that Cameron has experienced this as it sounds unpleasant for him.
"We would ask his mother to return the bar to Cadbury as soon as possible so that we can carry out a full investigation and we will keep them fully informed."
But there had been no direct complaint by Cameron's family to the company and they had not seen the offending product, the spokesman said.

A woman finds ready-made mash in her baked slater. Ewww.

Edinburgh Evening News

Quote:
A MOTHER has complained to supermarket bosses after almost serving up a woodlouse that was hidden in the middle of some mashed potato.

Carol Webster, of Lanark Road, says she found the woodlouse in a portion of ready-made mash after she had cooked it in the oven for 20 minutes. She was just about to hand it over to her 14-year-old daughter Lindsay when she spotted the creature just in time.
Advert for The Scotsman Digital Archive

The 41-year-old bar supervisor said: "I thought it was a bit of potato peel at first, but when I looked more closely I could see all the legs. My daughter felt quite sick because it was on her plate. I don't think I'll be buying the mashed potato again.

"We had a bit of a laugh and joke about it, but it's not a very nice thing to find."

Ms Webster said she would return the mash, which cost £1.85, to Tesco.

A spokesman for the firm said: "We would recommend she takes it back to the store so that we can send it away and get it tested. The quality of our products is extremely important to us and we apologise for any distress caused."

Tail find prompts food bar recall

The reason for the recall is "foreign body contamination," Netto said
A food chain is recalling packs of cereal bars after a customer found a rodent's body parts inside the product.
The customer bought the Minimum cranberry and apple bar at a branch of Netto in Norfolk, prompting the company to issue a recall of the product.

The shopper found the tail and body parts of what looked like a mouse inside the product, the Food Standards Agency said.

The complaint was reported to Breckland Council which has begun an inquiry.

No other Netto products were affected, the FSA said.

Netto's in-store notices said the reason for the recall was "foreign body contamination" and the store was offering a full refund for returned products.

A Food Standards Agency spokeswoman said the rodent parts had been "very visible" in the affected bar, making it unlikely that anyone would have eaten it by accident.

It’s not toad in the hole – it’s toad in the salad

The natterjack toad in the bag of Sainsbury’s salad.
A HUNTINGDON woman got more than she bargained for when she discovered a rare natterjack toad in a bag of supermarket salad.

Jessanne De'Ath, 23, of Hartford, was putting the bag of Sainbury's salad in her fridge when she saw the large brown toad moving around.

Jessanne said she was so shocked she started screaming and dropped the bag on the floor.

"I saw something brown with red spots moving among the lettuce leaves and it made me jump," she said. "I really couldn't believe something alive was inside my salad."

Jessanne De’Ath who found the natterjack in her salad.
It is believed the natterjack, which is about two inches long and one and a half inches wide, is endangered in this country but travelled to the UK from Portugal.

It was believed the toad survived in the bag by eating the salad.

Jessanne pierced a few holes in the bag to allow the toad to breath and then took it to the offices of Huntingdonshire environmental health.

She also complained to Sainsbury's and has since received a £10 gift voucher. However, the full time mother, said she will not be spending it on salad.

"It has put me off bagged salads and I will think twice about buying others vegetables, making sure I inspect them thoroughly first," she said.

A spokesman for Huntingdonshire District Council environmental team said: "This is a very unusual case but it still should not have happened. We are more used to dealing with objects rather than living creatures but we are working with the retailer to investigate the incident."

A statement from Sainsbury's said: "We set extremely high standards for our salads and hand inspect every lettuce at the point of harvest and then a proportion again at packing. An Environmental Health Officer has been informed and is investigating this thoroughly."

Three years ago an African tree frog was found in a bag of stir-fry purchased from a supermarket by a Huntingdonshire resident.

Festival Sells Deep-Fried Testicles

ELDERON, Wis. (AP) -- Around here, it may be tough to pass up anything deep-fried. Wisconsinites have deep-fried cheese curds, candy bars and Twinkies. They now have deep-fried livestock testicles, too.

More than 300 people paid $5 for all-you-can-eat goat, lamb and bull testicles Saturday at the ninth annual Testicle Festival at Mama's Place Bar and Grill in Elderon in central Wisconsin.

"Once you get over the mental (aspect) of what you're eating, it's just like eating any other food, and it tastes good," Buster Hoffman said.

Festival founder Nancy Fenske said the festival grew out of her late husband Roger's birthday party 12 years ago. They decided to have "a nut fry" at Mama's Place after bringing back lamb fries from a trip to Montana.

The event grew every year and now they fry up to 100 pounds of testicles, she said. "What else can you do in a small town?" Fenske said.

Butch Joubert, 58, likes the parts sandwiched between bread with tartar sauce. They're not so different from regular meatballs also served at the festival, he said.

"After a few beers, you can't really tell the difference," Joubert said.

Mouse found in bakery's treacle

Mouse
Rodent dropping were found in the bakery

A bakery near Limavady has been closed on health grounds following a rodent infestation.

Health officers from Limavady Council found a dead mouse in a container of treacle when they inspected the Old Polish Bakery in Greysteel on Tuesday.

Another two dead mice were found under a freezer.

It is the fourth time the bakery has been closed in the last 12 months because of a risk to human health.

The closure followed a court application by the council.

The council's solicitor told Londonderry Magistrates Court there was also widespread evidence of rodent droppings in the building.

Insects and teeth found in food
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2011/0304/1224291283164.html
LUKE CASSIDY

Fri, Mar 04, 2011

FOOD CONTAMINATED with teeth, zips and washers were among thousands of complaints dealt with by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland last year.

Its annual report for 2010 says nearly 11,000 queries and complaints were handled by its advice line. One in four related to consumers reporting issues concerning food and food establishments, up over 7 per cent on the previous year.

The authority said specific contamination incidents included a live beetle found in a bag of Caesar salad; a moth in a Madeira cake; a washer ring in a bowl of soup; and a zip in a black pudding.

Needles, safety pins, stones and both live and dead insects were also reported to have been found in food. Some 2,126 complaints ranged from reports of unfit food, low hygiene standards, inaccurate labelling information and suspected food poisoning.

The FSAI said all complaints were followed up and investigated.

Man arrested for contaminating produce at Bellevue Safeway

2004-09-21
by David A. Grant
Journal Reporter
BELLEVUE -- A Safeway grocery store here was closed at midnight Sunday and a man was arrested after a small amount of suspected human fecal matter was discovered on a head of broccoli.

This story reminds me of one i heard a few years ago.
A friend of mine was once a customer services manager for an unnamed British supermarket in an unnamed park of the UK (I won`t say where or who as some of you might be about to go food shopping lol) Abd she once had several customers complain that they`d witnesed vomit on the floor of the fresh produce aisle. On closer examination, it became apparant that not only was there vomit on the floor, it was also on the fruit and veg in the area. It was during the night shift and apparently the night manager deemed it ok to just mop the floor and replace the affected fruit and veg with fresh ones. He didn`t want to disinfect the area as he didn`t have the time or the staff!
Needless to say, my friend no longer works there!

The worst thing i`ve ever found on my food is an insect flash friend onto a mini hash brown at a burger king restaurant.( it looked like a large gnat to me) When i showed them the offending item, they game me a half arsed apology and gave me a humungous take away bag stuffed with the offending little blighters. At this point i`d already eaten most of the ones i had already and did not want any more (especially if they were from the same batch). I can only assume they gave me more as it was at the end of breakfast serving and they wanted to get rid. I didn`t eat the freebies and i`ve never eaten at burger king since!

The insect was probably the most nutritious part of the meal.

Nutrition: America awakens to the sour taste of 'pink slime'
The meat product that's in all kinds of US food is causing a very unsavoury row
Guy Adams Wednesday 28 March 2012

Take a cow. Chop it into pieces. Sell the edible bits to supermarkets, ship its hide to a handbag factory, send leftover bones and organs to a rendering plant. Now, what's left? In most of the developed world, the answer is simple: pet food. The sinew, gristle and fat regarded as unfit for human consumption are taken away by Mr Pedigree Chum and turned into something the salmonella-resistant stomach of your average Labrador will find vaguely digestible.

But in America, they do food differently. Here, in the land of GM corn, 26 per cent obesity and a government which classifies pizza as a "vegetable", scientists have discovered a way to turn bacteria-ridden scraps from the abattoir floor into a substance called "pink slime", which is then sold to unwitting consumers of hamburgers, tacos and other beef-based junk products. The process involves sticking bovine off-cuts in a heated centrifuge, so they separate into a mixture of liquid fat and a putty-coloured paste. That substance is then treated with ammonium hydroxide (a chemical used in household cleaners and home-made bombs) to kill off salmonella and e-coli. Then it's mixed with regular beef and – hey presto! – you have "all natural" mince.

In 2001, it became legal to sell "pink slime" in America. Today, more than half the ground beef sold in America contains the stuff. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA), which supposedly regulates the food industry, does not require it to be mentioned on ingredient lists. Since its provenance is a cow, they insist, you can call it "beef". If you think that's a bit rum, you're not alone. For years, US foodies have earnestly cited "pink slime" as exhibit A in the list of liberties taken by a rapacious food industry.

Not for nothing, they argue, has the stuff been banned in Europe, where mechanically-separated meat from cows and sheep has been prohibited since the era of BSE.

It took an Englishman, however, to turn their complaints into national outrage. A year ago, Jamie Oliver jollified the US version of his Food Revolution TV show by using a cow called Scarlet and a tumble dryer to demonstrate how something he calls "crap" became a staple of the American diet. Video of his stunt was uploaded to YouTube, and shared via social media. Opposition to "pink slime" slowly built.

In January, McDonalds announced the removal of "pink slime" from its burgers. So did Burger King and Taco Bell. This month, as the product became a burgeoning national talking point, several major supermarkets went slime-free. School districts were allowed to start banning it and dozens swiftly did. Yesterday, Beef Products Inc, pink slime's leading manufacturer, shut down three of its four plants, citing swiftly cratering demand. According to the American Meat Institute, 600 jobs could now be lost.

"It's a sad day for the families," claimed a spokesman. Though not, one must presume, for their diets.
