Yes - cochineal has always been used as food colouring - I've a small bottle of it in the kitchen - so what?
It makes pink icing on cakes, for a start.
What exactly is the difference between eating say, a steak , an egg, an oyster and an insect? |

| I'd much rather eat something coloured with cochineal than with some artificial colouring. |

| It makes a difference if you're vegan. |

| With utmost respect to vegans, isn't it inevitable to eat an insect at one point or another, in a salad, etc. just breathing............why make a fuss over this when there are much more important issues going on, with say, livestock, cruelty to animals and what have you. |

They'd tell you it is the thin end of the wedge. It's making people aware of what's being put in their food and drink. To vegans, the death or exploitation of any animal is unacceptable; no exceptions.
Just because this has been raised doesn't mean that focus has been shifted from other issues. |

The cochineal thing is weird because back in the early 80s I certainly remember reading that red food colouring was no longer made of beetles as artificial methods were now better and cheaper.
The poor insects must be feeling the pinch, like the rest of us.
Anyway, going back even further, finding out as a teenager where the pink food colour comes from certainly took the edge off my sweet tooth, which can't have been a bad thing. |

As Mme Mollusc pointed out there was a big hoohar about cochineal no longer being used, except smarties were, for some reason excepted, and i have delighted over the years by telling small children about it, usually just after they'd finished eating a packet.
Maybe it's a us/uk thing, or maybe its because they can still lump it under the all natural ingredients banner?
Tho there are still plenty of natural colourings they could use-beetroot etc or even...strawberries |

And a bottle of ginger ale for a ha'penny. Them were the days. |
