Maybe it's a us/uk thing, or maybe its because they can still lump it under the all natural ingredients banner?
Tho there are still plenty of natural colourings they could use-beetroot etc or even...strawberries |
My memory may be faulty, but I think back in the 90's one of the colors of Smartie (Red?) wasn't available in the US, possibly because of the conchineal thing.
I've a very good friend who is a serious Vegan, but even she will admit that you can't go through life without killing anything. Vegans are primarily against the killing and farming of animals. It then depends what definition of 'animal' you use. Birds would definitly be incuded in the banned substances, but insects would be one of those areas of doctrinal dispute common to all belief systems, as are animal-derived medicines. Beer is a good one actually, finings are used in the brewing process and therefore may render most beer non-vegetarian if you apply the strict letter of the vegetarian law:

| Insects get into a lot of the food we eat naturally and unavoidably, peanut butter is often cited as an example of a food with relatively high insect content. But at least if you're not eating meat you don't get to consume the actual animal shit that gets into a lot of it, especially burgers. |

If there's shit in your meat, you need to find a better butcher.
Or cook it for longer, at least. |

| Quote: | Needles found in Delta Air Lines on-board sandwiches
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-18868431
Needles were found in five sandwiches on board four separate flights (File image)
The FBI has opened an investigation after needles were found in sandwiches served on four Delta Air Lines flights bound for the US from the Netherlands.
The needles, which the authorities said appeared to be sewing needles, were found in five sandwiches prepared by the Amsterdam-based Gate Gourmet.
One person flying to Minneapolis was injured. Needles were also found on two flights to Atlanta and one to Seattle.
Delta said it was taking the matter "extremely seriously".
In a statement, the airline said it was co-operating with the FBI and the authorities in the Netherlands and was working with Gate Gourmet "to ensure the safety and quality of the food" served on board.
James Tonges, who was travelling on one of the flights, said he felt a needle in his mouth after biting into a sandwich.
"When I pulled it out of my mouth it was very clear," he told ABC News. "I cleaned the food off and it was about a one inch-long straight needle."
Delta spokeswoman Kristin Baur told the Associated Press news agency that flights attendants stopped serving the sandwiches as soon as the first needle was discovered, and alerted other flights. Passengers were served pizza instead.
The person who was injured declined medical treatment, said Ms Baur.
A spokeswoman for Gate Gourmet, Christina Ulosevich, said the company had also launched its own investigation and was heightening its own "already stringent safety and security procedures, to prevent any recurrence". |

'Pink slime' lawsuit for Jamie Oliver, ABC and blogger
The 'pink slime' issue sparked a debate over food production processes
A worker laid off by a US beef processing company has sued celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, a food blogger and ABC News, saying their use of the term "pink slime" helped him lose his job.
Bruce Smith, 58, was one of about 750 people fired by Beef Products Inc, maker of lean finely textured beef.
He is seeking $70,000 (£43,000) in damages, saying the company and workers were "maligned" by the "unfair" phrase.
The firm closed three plants and fired workers at its South Dakota office.
A social media campaign against use of the beef led to heightened public concerns over its health and safety.
Federal regulators said the beef ingredient met food safety standards, but critics argued the food was unappetising and possibly unsafe.
The US Department of Agriculture eventually chose to allow schools to stop serving the product.
Lean finely textured beef is made from beef heated and spun in a centrifuge to separate the meat from the fat, before the final product is treated with a puff of ammonium hydroxide gas to kill any bacteria.
Mr Smith, formerly senior counsel and director of Environmental, Health and Safety at Beef Products Inc, filed his lawsuit in Dakota County District Court, Nebraska.
The filing names Jamie Oliver, food blogger Bettina Siegel, ABC News, its journalists Diane Sawyer and Jim Avila and 10 other unnamed defendants.
The company "and its employees were unfairly and unnecessarily maligned and accused of producing a food product that did not exist, a product that critics unfairly labelled 'pink slime'," Mr Smith said in a statement.
He also claims that chef Jamie Oliver used his TV show and social media to target his former employer.
"Defendant Oliver proceeded to use his celebrity chef media notoriety to place pressure on American fast food company McDonald's, and others, to immediately stop using (lean finely textured beef) LFTB ground beef in its retail menu food products," the lawsuit alleges.
In a blog post, Bettina Siegel - who petitioned the US government to change its food policy - remained unrepentant.
"I'm confident the First Amendment protects the rights of all Americans, including bloggers like myself, against meritless attempts at censorship like this one.
"I will vigorously defend my right, and the rights of all of us, to speak out on matters of public importance."
Beef Products Inc has also sued ABC News separately for defamation, asking for damages of $1.2bn in damages.
Neither ABC News nor Jamie Oliver made any comment on Mr Smith's lawsuit.

Yate couple find dead songbird in their Tesco salad
A horrified couple tucked into a candlelit supper – and found a whole dead bird in their Tesco salad.
James and Jasmine Watson made the grisly find after dishing up a pre-packed baby leaf salad onto a plate to accompany their steak and chips.
?
James started eating the food – before spotting the soggy five-inch long bird lying in front of him.
Tesco has identified the bird as a Blackcap European warbler – usually found in Spain and Italy – and offered the couple £200 compensation.
Sales director James, 32, said: “I took three mouthfuls and then saw it. My first reaction was why have I got a soggy fishcake on my plate?
“But then I saw its beak and realised it was a full-sized dead bird. We couldn’t believe it. We both got off our stools and stood there in utter amazement for at least two minutes.
“We only had a few low lights on so we were effectively eating by candlelight.”
The £1.50 salad – marked ‘washed and ready to eat’ on the bag – was part of a Tesco home delivery that James and Jasmine had ordered online.
Sickened James was unable to contact Tesco’s customer services that evening but the next morning went straight to the local branch in Yate.
The store manager later visited their home in Yate with a bottle of wine and some flowers and took away the salad and the dead bird.
Tesco – which was this week voted Britain’s worst supermarket by customers – has apologised to the couple and offered them a £200 gift card as compensation. But James said the offer is insulting.
He said: “If it was a maggot or something I could almost understand it but how a whole bird was not picked up, I have just been gobsmacked by the whole thing. The magnitude of this was disgraceful and I find the offer of compensation a bit of an insult.”
Tesco said: “We were concerned to learn of this issue and have investigated thoroughly with our supplier.
“Both we and our suppliers have robust measures in place to prevent incidents such as this, and our salad leaves go through complex filtering and washing systems.”

| Quote: | Father finds knife in child’s birthday cake purchased from Walmart bakery
Nathan Bibeau of Lewiston, Maine said he made an unsettling discovery during his son Cayden’s 2nd birthday celebration. After the toddler blew out the candles, his Elmo-themed cake was cut and four pieces in, he found a paring knife inside the dessert. So the party was paused and Bibeau called the Auburn Walmart bakery where he purchased the cake to inform them. As reported by WGME 13, Walmart spokeswoman Kayla Whaling said, "This should not have happened. We're thankful no one was hurt and sincerely apologize to our customers for their experience. We are reaching out to the family to resolve this." Whaling also told WGME that Walmart is taking actions to prevent this from happening again and are eliminating the use of that particular knife in their bakeries across the country. Bibeau confirmed that Walmart offered him a refund and called to rectify the situation. While the father says he understands that mistakes can happen and will still shop at Walmart, he has contacted a lawyer and is considering legal action. |

Paul Hollywood: 'If I'm really tired, I hunt down a doughnut for the sugar rush'
A couple have been arrested after allegedly putting razor blades into doughtnuts and eating them in an attempt to claim damages against a Utah grocery store.
Hospital X-rays of Carole Lee Leazer-Hardman, 39, and Michael Condor, 35, showed the couple had several razor blades in their stomachs.
The razor blades ranged in size with the biggest as large as a thumbnail.
It is alleged that the couple put the razor blades in the doughnuts of the store, which is in the mall where the couple work, before eating them in an attempt to claim damages from Smith’s Food and Drug shop in Draper, Utah.
It is also alleged that they handed one of the razor blade doughnuts to a colleague working alongside them in the same shopping mall.
According to reports the colleague suffered cuts to her mouth, prompting her to contact police.
It is alleged the couple planned to extort money from the store after calling police to say they had found a a piece of sharp metal in a doughnut.
Draper Police Sergeant Chad Carpenter said it became clear that “things weren’t adding up” after detectives had examined the evidence.
"During the course of the investigation we were able to determine that they intentionally inserted these broken razor blades into doughnuts that they had purchased at Smith's and then swallowed the razor blades with the doughnuts," police said in a statement.
Investigators say they became suspicious about the couple's claims when they realised that the doughnuts were in tamper-proof packaging. |

| Ate some fresh raspberries recently. Found a dead beetle in one. Luckily not by biting into it, but take care to have a look inside your raspberries if you're having them for dinner. |
