Malian townsfolk lynch Islamist rebel leader - reports

Citizens of the northern Malian town of Gao have reportedly lynched a notorious Islamist leader in retaliation for the killing of a local journalist on suspicion he was cooperating with international radio. “Islamic police commissioner Aliou Toure was killed by the youth in revenge,” a Gao resident told Reuters. Toure was a local resident recruited by rebels as police commissioner after MUJWA Islamists took control of Gao in June 2012 and imposed strict Sharia law across the region.

Homophobic 'vigilante' video appears online
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-21142148

East London Mosque has condemned a group of men claiming to be "vigilantes implementing Islam"

A video has appeared online showing men shouting homophobic abuse at another man in east London, telling him to "get out of here" as "it is a Muslim area".

Last week, the East London Mosque condemned men shown in another video posted on the internet claiming to be "patrolling" Whitechapel.

Police started an inquiry and two men were later arrested.

In the latest video a man is told: "Get out of here you fag... Don't stay around here any more."

Gay rights group Stonewall said: "This incident is yet another reminder of the homophobic abuse that gay people face all too often."

'Stoke tensions'
In the previous footage posted last week, a group of men announced themselves to passers-by as "vigilantes implementing Islam upon your own necks".

The video shows the men pouring alcoholic drinks down drains.

The East London Mosque responded to the video saying: "Individuals claiming to be self-styled 'Muslim patrols' have been harassing members of the public on the streets of east London late at night, including outside our mosque after it has closed.

"These actions are utterly unacceptable and clearly designed to stoke tensions and sow discord. We wholly condemn them.

"The actions of this tiny minority have no place in our faith nor on our streets."

'You're dirty mate'
In the latest video, a man is approached in Whitechapel and asked: "Don't you know this is a Muslim area? What's wrong with your face?

"Why are you dressed like that for? You're walking through a Muslim area dressed like a fag, mate.

"You need to get out of here quicker. You're dirty mate. Look at your shoes.

"Get out of here you fag... Don't stay around here any more."

Stonewall said: "YouGov polling for Stonewall shows that every year one in eight lesbian and gay people are the victim of crimes or harassment simply because they are gay.

"We urge victims of all homophobic crimes and incidents to report them to the police and for the police to take action to protect gay people from these disturbing crimes."

Scotland Yard responded to the original footage posted saying: "We are aware of incidents over the weekend of 12/13 January where a small group of people had harassed members of the public, and of YouTube videos showing this.

"In response to this incident officers on duty are being briefed as to what has occurred and what to be on the look out for."

A 22-year-old man was arrested in the Acton area of west London on Sunday and a 19-year-old man was arrested after going to an east London police station on Monday.

The pair were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and public order offences and have been bailed to return to an east London police station in February and March pending further inquiries.

Now even Lego is being targeted... Rolling Eyes

Lego accused of racism with Star Wars set

Austria’s Turkish community said the model was based on Hagia Sophia mosque in Istanbul and that the accompanying figures depicted Asians and Orientals as people with “deceitful and criminal personalities.”

The Turkish Cultural Community of Austria released a statement calling for Lego to apologise for affronting religious and cultural feelings.

Austria’s Turkish community also took issue with the figures that went with the palace, including Jabba.

“The terrorist Jabba the Hutt likes to smoke a hookah and have his victims killed,” said the statement posted on the organisation’s website.

“It is clear that the ugly figure of Jabba and the whole scene smacks of racial prejudice and vulgar insinuations against Asians and Orientals as people with deceitful and criminal personalities.”

That one's funny. The so called mosque is not really a mosque:

Timbuktu mayor: Mali rebels torched library of ancient manuscripts
Fleeing Islamist insurgents burnt two buildings containing priceless books as French-led troops approached, says mayor

Islamist insurgents retreating from the ancient Saharan city of Timbuktu have set fire to a library containing thousands of priceless ancient manuscripts, some dating back to the 13th century, in what the town's mayor described as a "devastating blow" to world heritage.

Hallé Ousmani Cissé told the Guardian that al-Qaida-allied fighters on Saturday torched two buildings where the manuscripts were being kept. They also burned down the town hall and governor's office, and shot dead a man who was celebrating the arrival of the French military.

French troops and the Malian army reached the gates of Timbuktu on Saturday and secured the town's airport. But they appear to have got there too late to save the leather-bound manuscripts, which were a unique record of sub-Saharan Africa's medieval history.

"It's true. They have burned them," Ciffe said, in a phone interview from Mali's capital, Bamako. "They also burned down several buildings. There was one guy who was celebrating in the street and they shot him."

He added: "This is terrible news. The manuscripts were a part not only of Mali's heritage but the world's heritage. By destroying them they threaten the world. We have to kill all of the rebels in the north."

The manuscripts were being kept in two different locations – an old warehouse and a new South Africa-funded research centre, the Ahmed Baba Institute. Both buildings were burned down, the mayor said. Asked whether any of the manuscripts might have survived, he replied: "I don't know."

The manuscripts survived for centuries in Timbuktu on the edge of the Sahara hidden in wooden trunks, boxes beneath the sand and caves. The majority are written in Arabic, with some in African languages, and one in Hebrew, and cover a diverse range of topics including astronomy, poetry, music, medicine and women's rights. The oldest dated from 1204.

Seydo Traoré, a researcher at the Ahmed Baba Institute, who fled Timbuktu last year shortly before the rebels arrived, said only a fraction of the manuscripts had been digitised.

"They cover geography, history and religion. We had one in Turkish. We don't know what it said."

Traoré told the Guardian that some rebels had been sleeping in the new institute where some of the manuscripts were kept. He said that they had also destroyed the shrines of more than 300 Sufi saints dotted around the city. "They were the masters of the place," he said.

I seem to recall that not so long ago they were talking about how they could best preserve these ancient manuscripts. It is a tragic loss for history. Sad

Majority of Mali’s ancient manuscripts safe
http://rt.com/news/line/2013-01-30/#id44250

Retreating Islamists in the north of Mali were believed to have burnt ancient manuscripts, some dating as far back as the 13th century. It now appears they only destroyed a fraction of them. The director of Timbuktu’s Manuscripts Project at Cape Town University, Shamil Jeppie, said that 90% of them were safe, having been spirited away to the regional capital Bamuko when the Islamists first arrived and secretly distributed among the local population. The manuscripts, which range from history to geography and astronomy, medicine and Islamic law; date back in some cases to the 13th Century and have been compared in historical importance to the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Saudi preacher gets fine and short jail term for raping and killing daughter
http://rt.com/news/saudi-preacher-fine-rape-333/

Public anger has gripped Saudi Arabia after a prominent preacher who raped and beat to death his 5-year-old daughter was sentenced to a few months in jail and a $50,000 fine – known as 'blood money' – to compensate the victim's relatives.

According to Islamic law, the 'blood money' can be paid in lieu of the death penalty. The preacher's fine was reportedly half the usual amount because the victim was a girl.

Saudi preacher Fayhan Ghamdi, a frequent guest on Muslim TV networks, confessed to using cables and a cane to inflict the injuries, AFP reported, quoting activists from the group ‘Women to Drive.’

Ghamdi reportedly doubted that his daughter, Lama Ghamdi, was a virgin, and forced her to undergo a medical inspection.

In December 2011, Lama was admitted to hospital with multiple injuries, including a crushed skull, broken ribs and left arm, and extensive bruising and burns, according to the activist group. Hospital worker Randa Kaleeb said that the girl's back was broken, and that she had been raped "everywhere."

The hospital told the victim's mother that her child's “rectum had been torn open and the abuser had attempted to burn it closed,” AFP reported on Saturday.

In October 2012, the girl died from her injuries. The following November, the father was arrested. The judge ruled that the "blood money and the time the defendant had served in prison since Lama's death suffices as punishment," activists reported.

The incident sparked public anger in Saudi Arabia, prompting an online Twitter campaign calling for more severe punishment for violence against women and children. The 'Women to Drive' campaign, launched by women's rights activist Manal Sharif, has demanded the creation of legislation that would criminalize violence against women and children.
The petition is circulating on Twitter under the hashtag 'Ana Lama' – "I am Lama" in Arabic.

The issue has gained widespread traction in Saudi Arabia, and authorities promised to set up a 24-hour hotline that will take calls regarding child abuse.

Kashmir girl band Pragaash gives up after threats
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-21325225

The band appeared live at the Battle of the Bands in Srinagar in December

An all-girl rock group in Indian-administered Kashmir say they have disbanded after the region's most senior cleric called them "un-Islamic".

"Just tell everyone we have quit. We are no more a band," one of the members of the group Pragaash told the BBC.

The three teenage members say they have received threats since they appeared at a Srinagar music event in December.

On Sunday the Muslim-majority state's grand mufti criticised them for what he said was indecent behaviour.

"When girls and young women stray from the rightful path... this kind of non-serious activity can become the first step towards our destruction," Grand Mufti Bashiruddin Ahmad said in a statement, quoted by AFP news agency.

Many others have leapt to the girls' defence, however. Support for a band which has broken with tradition has poured in from all over the state and elsewhere in India, where the story has been headline news.

Abuse
Pragaash made their first live appearance at the Battle of the Bands music festival in Srinagar in December. Since then, they say they have received abuse and hate mail on their Facebook page.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has promised police will investigate the threats, and has promised the state will ensure their security.

"I hope these talented young girls will not let a handful of morons silence them," Mr Abdullah said on Twitter over the weekend.

Jammu and Kashmir is India's only Muslim-majority state and has been the scene of a violent insurgency against Indian rule since 1989.

The region has a long history of women dancing and singing in public at festivals and marriages, even though some clerics oppose such behaviour.

"Singing has been a part of our culture and we have had many famous female artistes from the region," said Mehbooba Mufti, president of the opposition People's Democratic Party.

A spokesman for the hardline Geelani faction of the separatist Hurriyat Conference distanced itself from the grand mufti's remarks.

"There is no threat to the girls. Nobody has issued any threats. It is a mere propaganda by the media," he said, adding that abuse posted on social networking sites could not be described as a threat.
