Hmmm. I'm sometimes guilty of that.
If a poster starts a thread to keep tabs on a developing story and, necessarily, does so by cut-and-pasting relevant news stories, then I don't really see the harm in it. Nobody's forcing people to read it, after all. |

| I think it helps if you're quoting an article to put a comment of your own on it to put it in context. Either that or put a kiss at the end. x |

I'm sure that many of us have pasted things verbatim sometimes but my irritation was occasioned by swathes of pasted articles that had not even been pruned of dead links, photo captions etc.
I counted twenty-seven (!) articles from the BBC site, which makes a nonsense of the notion that it was necessary to "collate*" this material. Many of those articles repeat the same Timeline over and over.
If the subject is important then it is worth more considered treatment. The number of hits on such a frequently-bumped thread is less telling than the number of contributors.
*Collate is not a synonym of collect.
edit: substituted "of" for "for" in last line.

They won't necsssarily remain at those links on the BBC site, some may go altogether.
But I take your point about pruning, mea culpa. |

| Since when did this website allow the breaking of copyright and the breaking of pay walls? |

Is that currently happening?
Are you referring to articles from The Times?
I have noticed this happening. |

| Articles from New Scientist being posted in their entirety before they go behind the pay wall. The poster even admits this is what they are doing. If the poster is so wedded to the idea of no copyright and no pay reading, they should start their own website to collect all those news stories which might disappear. Don't endanger this site. |

Well Monstrosa has c&ped copyright material here himself. Just went back a couple of pages of his posts and hes taken material in full from the Falmouth Packet & the Ottawa Citizen. Probably find more if you go further back.
I really think he should turn himself in.
I breached no firewall. The articles are freely available right now. I don't think NS has a problem with sites like FTMB. They haven't complained over the years. Unless Monstrosa works for NS then he shouldn't let it bother him.
I just hope the Citizen & Packet don't send Mounties and Pirates after him.
If the mods or site admins wish to issue a ruling on this then I will obey it. |

| Fair point, I've gone back and edited those posts I've found where I've quoted more than a couple of paragraphs. |

| What I do is post the headline as a link and then a short extract as a quote. People can read it or pass over it as they choose rather than having to scroll through loads of text. |

No, it was rather a petty point on my part. You've only posted in full a few times.
I just don't think I'm putting the FTMB at risk. But I might be wrong.
The mods will probably comment on this. |

Hardly anyone has ever complained to the mag about the quoting of copyrighted material and of those who have, we've always complied with their requests to remove it.
So, personally, I'd say carry on (within reason, though: there's really no need to quote h-u-g-e articles when a précis will suffice), but if it's behind a paywall, then please leave it there. |
