| Quote: | | But if I'm expected not to be offended by militant Atheists, why should I worry about offence to said atheists or members of other religions because I want to demonstrate my religion as long as I do it in peaceful ways ? |
You shouldn't, but in the story I quoted the issue wasn't that atheists were "offended". There was no suggestion of this. Instead PC student union types had taken offence on the part of others and ejected the atheists from the event because of the t-shirts they were wearing.
Atheists and secularists more generally tend not to take offence at others displaying their religious belief except where that belief impacts on others.
I'm a bit confused as to the point you're making here tbh. |

It gives me hope for the future of humanity that a newspaper report of the burblings of a small town council can lead to such erudite responses!
(We're still confused, but at a higher level! ) |

Quite a lot of people holding this position (of both genders) dislike being described as a piece of furniture. In my experience in various organisations the number of people who dislike being called "chair" exceeds the number who take offence at "chairman". |

Then they probably haven't grasped the true nature of their roll in the proceedings. |

Roll? |
To 'hold the chair'.

Chairman
The chairman, also simply known as the chair,[1] is the highest officer of an organized group such as a board committee, or deliberative assembly. The person holding the office is typically elected or appointed by the members of the group. The chairman presides over meetings of the assembled group and conducts its business in an orderly fashion.[2] When the group is not in session, the officer's duties often include acting as its head, its representative to the outside world and its spokesperson.
...
Terminology
Other terms sometimes used for the office and its holder include chair, chairperson, chairwoman, presiding officer, president, moderator and convenor.[3][4][5] The chairman of a parliamentary chamber is often called the speaker.[6][7]
The term chair is used in lieu of chairman, in response to criticisms that using chairman is sexist.[8][9][10][11] It is commonly used today, and has been used as a substitute for chairman since the middle of the 17th century, with its earliest citation in the Oxford English Dictionary dated 1658-9, only four years after the first citation for chairman.[12]
...
The word chair can refer to the place from which the holder of the office presides, whether on a chair, at a lectern, or elsewhere. During meetings, the person presiding is said to be “in the chair”, the person is also referred to as “the chair.” Parliamentary procedure requires that members address the “chair” rather than the “chairman”, or by using a person's name. This is one of many customs intended to maintain the presiding officer's impartiality and insuring an objective and impersonal approach.[2]
Riddick's Rules of Procedure, among others, claim an etymology of chairman as derived from the Latin manus, or "hand", and use this to claim gender-neutrality for the word. Some etymologists consider this to be incorrect,[22] and many dictionaries claim that the word is from "chair" (a seat or office of authority) and "man", a person.[9][23][24] A further derivation could be from the Latin 'men's (genitive mentis) = 'mind' making the meaning 'chief thinker', which is gender-neutral.[citation needed] |

Unlikely - we're talking about pretty senior experienced people - but if they prefer to be known as a "chairman" then who cares what their reasoning for doing so may be? I'm not sure on whose behalf you are taking offence here. |

Are you suggesting that the debate about chairman, chairperson, chairwoman isn't important,? shame on you. |

To be honest though, there's a distinct possibility that we've spent longer on it than they have. |
