Mega

the same people who classify the simpsons parody as childporn would also regard some manga in the same way. I'm not agreeing with that, its their mentality.

If I were defence counsel in that case I would have argued that the Simpsons have been around since 1987/9 ('87 if you count the shorts!) so that leaves most of the stock characters around the 20 mark....

Megadeth; I believe that there is PLENTY of erotic manga out there (generally called 'hentai'), and Japanese pornography rules being what they are some of it could be considered 'child' (i.e under 1 Cool pornography in other countries.

I actually read a review of a manga video (which shall remain nameless) some days ago in which the reviewer pointed out that it should not really be on sale in that format in her country (USA) since it included some scenes of child abuse. In fact, I'm jolly glad to have that particular reviewer around since she has prevented me from buying countless mangas where the plot involves stuff I'm none too happy watching. Of course plenty of it is absolutely fine but I've certainly been on my guard, especially when it hasn't been dubbed.

Yes....the inappropriate smiley refuses to go away. That's meant to say 'under 18'.

Megadeth,....there are a number of films out there with really nasty content and that wasn't the one I read the review of. There was a reason I declined to name it; I would hate to see the day that someone goes online looking for such depraved material because of something I have written, albeit innocently; maybe you could edit your post?

The reviewer I mentioned WAS American, I certainly am not. The scenes depicted breached a US law on depiction of child sexual abuse.

There is also erotic manga out there; I tend to use the terms Manga and Anime interchangeably unless talking with buffs; some hentai starts out as manga and is adapted as anime (examples abound; e.g Kamyla).

What's the difference between manga and anime? I always thought of anime as for kids, and manga as more adult. Not adult adult, just... like The Simpsons (manga) vs Rugrats (anime).
It's totally likely I've made this distiction up and Megadeth is now staring at my words like I have 3 heads Laughing

The part where you name the title of a film. That's just a polite suggestion of course. Very Happy

Guillermo del Toro's Simpsons couch gag is the best thing ever

Can you name all the classic horror movies in this amazing title sequence that Guillermo del Toro directed for this Sunday's Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episode? There is just so much greatness in this three-minute clip. Can't stop watching.

Heard about this on t'wireless last week so it's good to read it in tGrauniad too:

The Simpsons' secret formula: it's written by maths geeks

Quote:
When one of Britain's best-known science writers went to Los Angeles to meet the show's writers for a new book, he found a team dedicated to inserting gags about complex maths problems. And you thought it was just a cartoon…

Without doubt, the most mathematically sophisticated television show in the history of primetime broadcasting is The Simpsons. This is not a figment of my deranged mind, which admittedly is obsessed with both The Simpsons and mathematics, but rather it is a concrete claim backed up in a series of remarkable episodes.

The first proper episode of the series in 1989 contained numerous mathematical references (including a joke about calculus), while the infamous "Treehouse of Horror VI" episode presents the most intense five minutes of mathematics ever broadcast to a mass audience. Moreover, The Simpsons has even offered viewers an obscure joke about Fermat's last theorem, the most notorious equation in the history of mathematics.

These examples are just the tip of the iceberg, because the show's writing team includes several mathematical heavyweights. Al Jean, who worked on the first series and is now executive producer, went to Harvard University to study mathematics at the age of just 16. Others have similarly impressive degrees in maths, a few can even boast PhDs, and Jeff Westbrook resigned from a senior research post at Yale University to write scripts for Homer, Marge and the other residents of Springfield.

etc

It's a plug for Singh's book, which isn't a bad thing in my opinion. Wink

Interesting that this should come up today. Just last night I thought I saw Homer Simpson sitting in a parked car!

I did a double-take (as you do) and realised it was in fact an ordinary bloke facing the other way, but some of the features of the image suggested Homer Simpson! (The car was maybe 50 yards away, and it was dusk.)

This was a purely visual misperception - I hadn't been thinking about the Simpsons, and I can't remember when I last watched it. But there was a recent article in the press that said that a character in the show is to be killed off soon, so that might have influenced my brain as it hunted around for a match to a briefly glimpsed pattern of light and shade seen through a car windscreen.

A character was killed off with great hoo-ha a few years back with lots of Who Shot JR?-style publicity, turned out to be Mrs Flanders. This time the money's on Selma or Patty.
