Ok, so now we have yet another conspiracy theory about september 11th (the Vreeland story, on another thread) - to hoin the ones about how it wasn't a plane that hit the Pentagon, about how it wasn't planes that bought down the WTC towers, about how it wasn't McVeigh who blew up the Ohklahoma building.....etc
Justwho is planting all these stories about Govenment cover-ups? It seems to me that for years, certain people/bodies have been working at getting Americans to distrust their Government - they have been working at it for years in the UFO field, now they are starting to widen their reach. What are they up to?
Any ideas/thoughts from you lot?
:hmph:EDIT: Oops - meant this to go into the conspiracy thread, obviously. Any way of moving it?

There seems to be a weird convergence between extreme right and left wing thoughts, prompting these theories.
The extreme right believe that the Federal Government is a tool of the New World Order, and they are gradually manipulting World Society until they can hoard us all into death camps.
The extreme left seem to believe in much the same thing, but they are not so hung up about the gun issue.
Still, just cause you are paranoid, doesn't mean that they are not out to get you |

| There always seems to be an agenda behind the conspiracy theorists. Usually they have just published a book, or are looking for members to fund their group. Maybe I'm just cynical about a lot of the conspiracy theories. |

I watched Hard Talk last night (On BBC News 24). This time the interviewie was Ron Howard (I think??lol The director that played the ginger haired guy in The Fonze?). The interviewer asked Ron if it was true that the American Government had asked him/Hollywood to make pro-American, and patriotic movies. (I wondered why all these war movies were comming out in the US when I thought people didn't want to see more blood shed. Obviously I was looking at it from a different perspective to the American Government!) He said it was true. Although some might refer to this as propaganda, I'd call it a conspiracy! Particually after watching a report showing America broadcasting pro-American statements in Arabic on the Arabic airwaves, and out of planes.
Just because the 'right side' is doing this, I don't think it should be called under any other name. I'm not shouting about right or wrong here, or who is right or wrong, I just think 'pot and kettle' are a bit hypocritical. |

This is something that I have been wondering about for some time. What if the real conspiracy is the conspiracy theory itself? (Aaaggghhhh!!!!! Just fallen down into a pit of recursion;) ) |

Ah yes, Logic's equivalent of Physics' Black Hole.
And nobody knows what happens at the end - or anyway, that's what they want you to think...

| Jon Ronson's book 'Them' is a particularly interesting read which addresses the heady combination of paranoia, bigotry and wrong thinking behind many of the conspiracists' beliefs. |

FWIW, it seems that a lot of conspiracy theories generate spontaneously and organically, with each retelling giving them an added aura of plausibility. The fact that occasionally some have a genuine basis in fact helps too.It is then that organisations with an agenda may start using them for their own ends.
Conspiracy theory enables people to feel that even if they have no control over their lives, someone else does. It is psychologically more comforting than the thought that great heroes are mortal, governments do make genuine mistakes and complete catastrophe can occur randomly. |

I think most conspiracy theories are started by people with very little influence in or knowledge of the real world so they start their own little worlds where they have the power to dole out esoteric information as they see fit.
Its the same mind set as people who 'know' that they have been taken to Venus or 'know' how to make anti-gravity pills.
On the other hand I am certainly not saying that anyone should ever trust their government to tell the truth that would just be silly.
Most conspiracy theories are just plain wrong but one or two have an element of truth about them. |

KarlD :- remember the old adage "I don't believe in conspiracy theories except the true ones" !
To reject all conspiracy theories a priori is a failure of critical thinking on a par with that which sceptics accuse conspiracists of.
It would be illuminating to know the popularity of conspiracy theories. I'm sure there's only a tiny minority with a very particular mindset believe the whacky ones while the rest of us just get called whacky by the sceptics. |

As Hagbard Celine says, "A conspiracy with one hundred and twenty vectors doesn't look like a conspiracy: it looks like chaos. The human mind can't grasp it, and hence declares it nonexistent." |
