Yes, after reading what's left of the mostly-deleted comments on the Guardian item about it, I reckon a lot of other people are thinking that too.  |

Interesting - do you have a link to the Irish couple's original claim?
I watched the programme last night and remain baffled as to why no one looked into claims that people were hanging around the apartment complex at the time. Presumably this isn't completely new information.
At the time I thought the McCanns' behaviour pretty odd but I really don't think they could have kept this up for six years if they were involved in any way. It would take a sociopath to keep the matter in the public eye in the way they have if they knew more than they were saying.
I have to say though that I'm not expecting these latest leads to go anywhere. |

The episode was related by Goncalo Amaral in his book 'Truth of a Lie'. Given that the McCanns have successfully had this book banned I assume it wouldn't be sensible to post an extract of it here. I've just reread it though, and it seems clear that the couple were very convinced, but their claims weren't followed up. |

It probably wouldn't. It's hovering on the brink, as it is.
Let's just hope the new information leads to the quick arrest of generic variable chin guy.

Thanks - actually, looking back, the Smiths' identification is mentioned earlier in the thread. I don't see that it is hovering on the brink of libel territory as it was reported at the time in various publications. It is actually pretty poor that Crimewatch did not at least acknowledge the initial identification. Even if the detectives now believe that the couple were mistaken it is a relevant factor in terms of what generic guy might look like. |

It's not just you, and that's what the slightly cryptic comments regarding the Smiths' identification refer to. As I say it's quite poor of Crimewatch not to come clean about this and it makes you wonder what else is being spun. |
