it doesn't say how far from the road all of the bits were, but it does sound horribly like they drove up the motorway slinging bits of the body out of the car every so often Sad

There's more...

Another body part found in dismemberment murder case
Adam Fresco, Crime Correspondent

Police investigating the murder of a man whose remains have been found scattered over two counties recovered another body part today.

The latest find was made by a motorist at a lay-by on the A10 near Puckeridge, in Hertfordshire.

It follows the discovery of a severed head in Asfordby, Leicestershire, last week, just days after a forearm and a leg were found at separate locations in Hertfordshire.

A spokeswoman for Hertfordshire police said: "Detectives from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire major crime unit, who are currently investigating the murder of a man whose body parts were found in Hertfordshire and Leicestershire, are currently at the scene.

“It’s too early to say at this stage exactly what’s been found – specialist forensic teams and search officers will be in attendance.”

A post-mortem examination established that the head found near a makeshift cattle pen by a farmer on his land in Asfordby belonged to the same man whose limbs were discovered about 80 miles away in Hertfordshire.

Have all these parts been scattered at once, or are they in storage somewhere and left around the country over a period of time? Does someone have a freezer full of these things that they distribute as they see fit?

Fifth human body part uncovered

A new body part has been found by police investigating the discovery of human remains in two counties.

Police were called to Gore Lane Shocked in Ware, Hertfordshire on Saturday, and have sealed-off the road.

A spokesman said part of a torso had been found, close to the A10 road, which had been there "for some time".

It was likely to be from the same man whose left leg, head and arms have been found in Leicestershire and Hertfordshire, he confirmed.

The major crime unit for Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire is on the scene, and the Leicestershire force has been notified.

Search for murder victim's hands

Police investigating the murder of a man whose body was cut into pieces have said a torso found in a ditch had the right arm and upper left arm attached.

Hertfordshire Police said the latest find in Gore Lane, Standon, on Saturday was from the same victim as other body parts found in two counties.

A police spokeswoman said only the victim's hands were still to be found.

The man's legs, head and left forearm were found in separate locations in Leicestershire and Hertfordshire.

A Hertfordshire Police spokeswoman said: "The full right arm was attached to the man's torso which was discovered on Saturday, as was the upper left arm."

1: 22 March: left leg found at Cottered
2: 29 March: forearm found at Wheathampstead
3: 31 March: head found at Asfordby
4: 7 April: right leg found at Puckeridge
5: 11 April: torso found at Gore Lane, Standon

Detectives from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire major crime unit are working with officers in Leicestershire on the murder inquiry.

The torso was found close to the A10.

Police have yet to identify the victim, but said the man was believed to have suffered from a form of fungal infection to his toenails, with his small toenails "discoloured and thickened" and curled under.

Body parts murder victim was stabbed in the back
Adam Fresco, Crime Correspondent

The murder victim at the centre of a grisly police investigation into body parts left at locations across two counties was stabbed in the back with a large knife, it was revealed today.

Police have not been able to establish the man's identity but said they had established he was aged between his mid-forties and early-sixties, was 5ft 6" to 5ft 10" tall and weighed up to 17 stone.

........

The only body parts still missing are the hands, which the police believe may have been permanently disposed of in an effort to hamper attempts to identify the victim.

A post-mortem examination found that he suffered from eczema, skin discoloration around the ankle and fungal infection in his toenails. He is also said to have had two front teeth missing for a couple of years. The man's shoe size is believed to be between a seven and a nine.

The victim was naked and he did not have any identifying marks like tattoos or operational scars. However he did fracture his left leg when he was between 10-25-years-old.

A search of DNA databases has failed to identify the man and police are consulting the National Missing Persons Bureau to see if they can find anyone matching his description.

So far they have ruled out 60 missing men from the south east region of England but are now preparing to widen their search.

As The Times revealed today officers have also called in help from geographical and behavioural profilers to identify their suspect or suspects.

Detectives hope to have a clay reconstruction of the face available by the end of the week.

Officers believe that the man was killed no more than two days before the first body part was found.

Detective Chief Inspector Michael Hanlon, from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said it was one of the most horrific crimes he had worked on.

Mr Hanlon, who is leading the inquiry, said: "This is a very exceptional crime not just within Hertfordshire but within the UK. Quite lengthy steps have been taken to avoid us knowing who this man is. Once I have that identity, that opens up a large number of lines to identify who the perpetrators are.

"There is nothing to suggest that there was any length of time between the body parts being dumped and they were potentially left on the same day or same weekend.

"Based on the description we have someone will know who this man is. I am dealing with a horrific murder and I need the public's help in finding out who he is."

Two arrests in body parts probe

Two people have been arrested in connection with the murder of a man whose dismembered body was found across Leicestershire and Hertfordshire.

Detectives from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire major crime unit said they had arrested two people.

The two, in their 20s and 30s, were arrested at an address in north London on Tuesday and were in custody in Hertfordshire, said police.

A spokesman said they believed they had now identified the murder victim.

'Working closely'

Det Ch Insp Michael Hanlon said: "We believe we have identified the victim of the murder and specialist officers are currently working closely with the family.

"We cannot release any more details of his identity at this stage."

A post-mortem examination showed the man died of a stab wound to the back.

His head was found in a field in Leicestershire, while his torso, left forearm and legs were found in separate locations in Hertfordshire.

The man was said to be aged between his mid-40s and early-60s and was of large build, weighing between 16 and 17 stone (102-107kg).

Police previously said no clothing had been recovered and they were concentrating on men who have gone missing in south-east England.

Before the arrests police were due to release a facial reconstruction of the man.

This was a story I thought would quickly fizzle out

...But in fact there seems to have been some rapid and successful detective work..

Body parts victim named by police

A man whose body parts were found dumped in two English counties has been named by police as a 49-year-old kitchen salesman from north London.

Police said the remains had been identified as belonging to Jeffrey Howe, from Southgate.

Earlier a man and a woman were arrested in connection with the finds in Leicestershire and Hertfordshire.

Magistrates granted police an extra 36 hours to quiz the pair, who were detained in north London.

The man, 37, and the woman, 20, appeared at Hatfield Remand Court earlier.

Police officers now have until late on Friday to question the pair.

Mr Howe's head was found in a field in Leicestershire, while his torso, left forearm and legs were found in separate locations in Hertfordshire.

Police believe he was killed by a stab wound to the back.

In a statement, Mr Howe's brother, who was not named, said: "Jeffrey was an extremely caring son.

"He was a jovial, charming character who had a heart of gold and would get on with anyone."

His family said Mr Howe had been working as a salesman for a kitchen firm, and prior to that had lived in various locations across the country.

He also lived in Italy for a time where he had worked as a cook.

Jeffrey's brother added: "Although we didn't have a great deal of contact and we hadn't seen each other for a few months, as you can imagine our family has been left extremely traumatised by what has happened.

"We are finding it extremely hard to come to terms with what has happened."

Police launched the inquiry last month after Mr Howe's left leg with the foot attached was found in a lay-by on the A507 in Cottered, Hertfordshire.

A week later, on 29 March, a left forearm was found beside a village lane near St Albans, Hertfordshire.

Two days later, Mr Howe's head was found in a field near a cemetery in Ashfordby, Leicestershire.

His right leg was found off the A10 at Puckeridge in Hertfordshire on 7 April, and on 11 April his torso was found by woods in Standon, Hertfordshire.

First picture of 'jigsaw man' as it is revealed arrested couple were victim's flatmates
By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 10:57 AM on 24th April 2009

The couple arrested over the grisly 'jigsaw murder' of Jeffrey Howe were the victim's flatmates, it was revealed today.

The 49-year-old's dismembered body had been scattered across two counties.
He was identified after DNA tests on body parts that were dumped in rural locations in Hertfordshire and Leicestershire.
Mr Howe, a salesman for furniture firm Kitchens Direct, shared the property with a 37-year-old man with whom he worked and the colleague's 20-yearold lover.

Mr Howe rented a room to the couple in the property in a quiet new build development, where they were both arrested on Tuesday.

He and the divorced workmate were at one time directors of a business called Speedy Designs, registered to the two-bedroom ground-floor flat.

The couple are being held at a police station in Hertfordshire on suspicion of murder. They appeared at Hatfield magistrates' court yesterday, where police were given extra time to question them.

Residents said they had not seen Mr Howe or his two red Jaguar cars for about six months and said they believed he had rented out his two-bedroom ground-floor flat.
Filipe Ferreira, 27, a nurse, described the moment the male suspect was arrested at the Southgate flat.

He said: "I saw the van coming up. He was arrested and was just wearing trousers with the handcuffs. He was very calm and got into the police van. It was the first time I had seen him."

Mr Howe, a bachelor with no children had spent time in Italy, working as a cook.

Police, who fear Mr Howe has become a victim of a gang feud, launched their murder hunt on March 22 when a left leg with a foot attached was found in a holdall in a lay-by on the A507 in Cottered, Hertfordshire.

....

During the investigation, police had said that Mr Howe suffered from eczema, was overweight and had two front teeth missing.

He also had a bleached skin pigmentation on his legs and an infection on his toenails, causing them to discolour, thicken and curl over.

His identity was confirmed after a call to an incident room controlling the 100 officers on the murder hunt.

A former work colleague who laid flowers at the dead man's home in Southgate, north London, this morning described him as a 'very good guy'.
Sophoclis Sophocli said: 'I used to come round here to watch football with him. He supported Manchester United and I supported Tottenham and that was the last time I saw him when they played in the Carling Cup.
'We worked together at the same firm and kept in touch when we moved on.
'He was a lovely guy, very hardworking, and with a lot of heart.'

Mr Howe's brother, who was not named by police, issued a statement on behalf of his family last night.
He said: 'Jeffrey was an extremely caring son. He was a jovial, charming character who had a heart of gold and would get on with anyone.
'He could be a little selfish sometimes but did what he thought was best.
'Although we didn't have a great deal of contact and we hadn't seen each other for a few months, as you can imagine our family has been left extremely traumatised by what has happened.'

But neighbours painted a different picture. Mother-of-three Frances Loizou, 48, said she had argued with Mr Howe over his attitude towards children playing outside his flat.
She said: 'If the kids were out there playing he told them to go away.
'He'd be really aggressive. He wasn't friendly. He didn't really speak to anyone. He said he wanted peace and quiet.'
Ms Loizou added: 'It's dreadful. He was a horrible man but I was very sad to hear what happened. He didn't deserve that.'

Neighbours said there had been lots of police activity at Mr Howe's block of flats in Pickard Close, Southgate, since Tuesday.
The breakthrough for detectives appears to have finally come after a member of the public called their incident room reporting Mr Howe as missing.

Severed foot found in wheelie bin

Detectives launched an investigation following the discovery of what they believe is a human foot in a wheelie bin.

Police made the grim find yesterday afternoon at a property in Hamilton Avenue in Cobham, Surrey, after receiving a call about a "suspicious incident".

The severed foot was lying on top of a pile of rubbish inside a wheelie bin, police said.

Seems there's a whole body in the bin. It's now not clear whether the foot was severed or not.

Man sought over body found in bin

Detectives are trying to trace a 33-year-old man after a woman's body was found in a wheelie bin in Surrey.

Police were called to Hamilton Avenue, Cobham, at 1520 BST on Saturday after a foot was seen sticking out of the green bin in front of the house.

The body of a white woman, believed to be in her 30s, was discovered surrounded by rubbish.

Police are trying to trace Peter Wallner, who moved out of the house about three weeks ago.

A Surrey Police spokesman said he "may be able to provide useful information for the investigation".

He is described as a heavy-built white man with broad shoulders, about 6ft (1.8m) tall, with slightly receding brown cropped hair and brown eyes.

House-to-house inquiries and a full search of the area are being carried out.

A post-mortem examination is being carried out at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.

Residents in the area said they were shocked by the discovery.

One woman told BBC News: "It's a very quiet place, it's where you bring up your family.

"I've lived here for 30-odd years and it's the first thing like this that's happened."

She added: "It's quite scary. You think of it as being a safe place, but when you hear of a body being found it's shocking."

Police manhunt over dismembered body in suburban wheelie bin
David Brown

A husband is being hunted by police after the decomposing body of a woman was found in a wheelie bin in a quiet suburban street.

Peter Wallner, 33, has not been seen since the badly decomposed body of a white women in her thirties was found hidden among rubbish in Cobham, Surrey, on Saturday afternoon.

Mr Wallner, from Germany, had been living in the semi-detached house with his wife Melanie but she has not been seen for about a year. Neighbours said that another woman with a baby had moved into the threebedroom property after Mrs Wallner left. Mr Wallner moved out of the address three weeks ago and it is not known where he is, say detectives.

He is described as white and heavily built with broad shoulders, about 6ft tall with slightly receding, brown, cropped hair and brown eyes.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: “Scenes of crime officers carefully emptied the bin to preserve forensic opportunities, recovering the body of a white woman, believed to be in her thirties, which had been surrounded by rubbish.” A description of Mr Wallner has been circulated to forces across Britain and the Continent.

Police were called to the semidetached house occupied by Mr Wallner when a human foot was spotted protruding from the green wheelie bin.

A neighbour said that Mr Wallner and his wife appeared to have split up and she moved out more than a year ago.

The 42-year-old woman, who asked not to be named, said: “He would often sit outside in his shorts. For a while there was another woman living there who would breast-feed a baby on the steps.” The neighbour also saw the wheelie bin on its side on the driveway shortly before police were called. “The binmen come on Fridays around here but it wouldn’t have been collected because they won’t come down the path — you have to put it out on the pavement. It could have been there for three weeks.”

The police spokesman said: “Detectives are focusing their inquiries on locating a previous resident of the address where the body was found, who may be able to provide useful information for the investigation.”

A post-mortem examination, car- ried out at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, found that the woman had suffered a serious head injury but no clear conclusion could be made about the cause of death. She had been dead for at least three weeks. The body was intact but badly decomposed.

Mr Wallner was a chef but had been unemployed for some time. He married in 2001 but separated soon after and had since had several girlfriends.

Police were interviewing Mr Wallner’s friends and former work colleagues last night. They believe there is a strong possibility that he has already left the country and may have more than one passport.

Mr Wallner had been head chef at the Oak Room restaurant of the Woodlands Park Hotel in Cobham but left more than six months ago. A hotel spokesman said: “This is a matter for the police.”
