I'm not very good with things like this, but does anybody know a way in which I could record the audio from these old interviews at the Imperial War Museum:
http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/80008532
I'm going on a long journey and wanted to put them on my mp3 player.
Obviously, I could play them and just record in real-time what's passing through my sound-card using a number of programs, but that defeats the point and would take forever.
Does anyone have a way of extracting the audio and saving it? |

Thank you, James.
I'm giving it a whirl as we 'speak'. |

No joy.
I can't actually aquire the file to play with an convert. The closest I can get is a series of links like this. I've tried playing with them, but nothing will open them except my browser.

Any other experts? How do I get from here to an audio file I can play with?
Edit: I've used Firefox to isolate the .swf file in that page, but it's tiny - possibly because it hasn't all been played. Is there a way to download it fully without playing through it first? |

Hmmmm.
I usually use Antbar to record video (in this case, it would seem that the "video" is non-existent, but still tied to the audio, so you'd probably have to extract it after the fact), but it doesn't seem to recognize that there's anything playing.
I've submitted a request form to Ant.com to see what's going on.
Basically, with Ant, you need to start something buffering, then you can pause it, click "Download" and walk away.
It sounds a little messy for what you want to do, but I'm not finding anything else, aside from some very tedious mucking about with extracting the SWF file, etc, which sounds like what you've already done. I've also had very limited success with that method, too.
I'll keep poking around. There must be a way, somehow, to accomplish this. |

You can use, Audacity, to rip and record the audio from your computer, provided, there's a wave or possibly a stereo mix channel available on the sound card as a source (check the sound card properties).
In order to convert the sound file into an MP3, you'll need to install the Lame encoder in the audacity folder, following the instructions.
If you haven't got a wave, or stereo mix channel, you might try linking the headphone, or line out channel to the line in channel and recording from there (you'll need a double ended 3.5mm jack cable for that). |

I know the method is slow, but with some of these streaming sites, it's about the only way to do it. You might find the actual .swf file in the browser cache, but I'm not sure how the Adobe Flash Player actually squirrels the files away.

Thank you for all your help. I've recorded that first part, but I have to play the whole damned thing...
I will certainly take a look at that link.
Where there's a will... |

Yes, I keep running into brick walls. Thank you for the ideas nonetheless. |
