| When I worked in northern lock-ups, to 'grip' someone meant to restrain them. |

This sounds so sinister (from wiki):
| Quote: | | In the late 1980s a young man named Gary Kelly was electrocuted at New Brighton railway station, allegedly whilst running away from Arobieke. Arobieke was convicted of his manslaughter, but successfully appealed the conviction on the grounds that he had not acted unlawfully by 'standing on the platform and looking into trains' |
And:
| Quote: | | During the court case, details of Arobieke's "stalker’s manual" were disclosed; a book Arobieke had compiled that was "full of details about victims' body measurements, contact numbers and families." It was alleged that Arobieke would "do research into his victim, confronting them with such details as their father's car registration number or sibling's place of education." |

| passing someone their own address or even telling them which bus they got home, or as above registration plate etc. was and possibly still is a fairly common intimidation technique in some areas. |

There's a minor panic in my home town about Aki. Apparently he has been seen hanging around schools, and letters from the police have gone out to parents.
A mate rang me to 'warn' me, swearing that her friend's school'd had both the police in to assembly to warn the kids AND the letter home.
I told her that while Aki does exist, he is currently a guest of Her Majesty, as a quick google would confirm for her.
There's even a Facebook page about Aki lurking in the area. |

What weirds me out, is that I live in the Warwickshire, in the Midlands, and the name 'Purple Aki' rings a bell from when I was a kid. In a child molesting 'bogeyman' kind of way. 'Purple Aki will get you'. This was the 1980s.
It's weird how this one name seems to have done the rounds in school playgrounds down the years, far outside the North-West. I have to wonder how? |

I grew up in Warwickshire at the same time and I remember that too. |

Hi CarlosTheDJ.
I grew up in Kenilworth. I definitely remember that name. I'm sure it was used around our way. This whole story sounds earily familliar to UL's we had. What town were you in? |

You see I find this really kind of weird. Looking down on this thread there are people down South, people in the Midlands, all knowing the name, all aware of the Urban Legend, of Purple Aki/Acky/Aggy - based around a real life individual at large for some 15 years on Merseyside.
This kind of thing fascinates me, in as much as at some point during these years that UL concept has graduated further South down the UK. And you have to wonder quite how that occurred? As a kid in the 80s I knew the name via playground talk, I guess. I knew that there was this guy who like squeezing young boys muscles. That's all I knew. But as far as I was aware this was a local thing here in Warks.
Clearly it WASN'T. We can see that now. But I don't recall anybody in my year group at school who had come down from Merseyside, and possibly brought the UL with them.
Now granted I had and Aunt and Uncle who moved to the Wirral during the 80s. But I feel pretty sure this was a UL that kids on my street, and at my school, had been discussing long before that point. They moved up to Ellesmere Port at the tail end of the 80s. At least one of the friends I had, who I can recall spreading this UL, had move away by that point.
It's actually kind of creepy. Especially to discover the guy is a real person. |

I am on the outskirts of London and only found out about this fella a few years back via the internet.
I guess word of mouth would have spread it out in wider and wider circles up north and then the dawn of the net in the mid90s will have helped it travel further. |

The scare in my home town (30 miles from Liverpool) seems to have been quite widespread and taken seriously. There was a police announcement in the local rag soon after I heard about it, stating that the individual in question (unnamed for legal reasons) was definitely not in the area.
Interestingly, one concerned parent who rang me thought his name was P*ki Aki. |

Ouch.
Is this the example you were citing earlier - taking place even though the REAL Purple Aki was in prison at this point? |

Yes, it is, and if I can find the newspaper I'll scan the article and post it.
I dunno if there really were letters home and in-school police visits though, as I heard that from a friend of a woman who reckons her kids had all that.
Was just looking for the 'Keep Purple Aki Away From Our Kids' Facebook group and found lots of groups dedicated to him, including 'Purple Aki Should Bum Rochdale'. |

Asked a couple of parents of primary school age kids today if they'd heard about him, and they both said thair kids had been formally warned - by two different schools - and one had a letter home.
I've asked for the letter so I may be able to scan it & show it on here. Fingers crossed. |
