'Bridge to nowhere' sparks anger
Residents have called for a half-finished bridge over a south-east London river, known as the "bridge to nowhere", to be completed.
The bridge was meant to cross the River Wandle in Colliers Wood, linking a housing development to a nature park.
But by 2007 work halted amid concern from the Environment Agency that it might block the rover and cause floods.
Developer George Wimpey said it was Merton Council's duty to complete the bridge but the council denied this.
The bridge was part of a planning agreement between the council and Bewley Homes, linking their Bewley Estate to the nature park on the river's east bank.
But after planning permission was granted and construction of the bridge began, concerns were raised that it could form an obstruction to the flow of water during flooding.
The cost of altering the bridge was estimated at £75,000. The bridge's construction ended and has yet to resume.
As a result people living on the estate, which is now managed by developer George Wimpey, are still unable to cross the river to the nature park.
Colliers Wood Residents' Association spokesman Keith Allen said: "People can't believe that we've got a bridge - a really good bridge - that doesn't go anywhere."
A spokesman for Merton Council described the half-finished bridge as "a great frustration" and "an embarrassment".
"We had negotiated with a developer in a very positive manner to secure this and other facilities, and it's a great sadness that it hasn't come to fruition," he said.
The George Wimpey spokesman said: "We sympathise with the local residents but can confirm that we have completed our obligation to the local authority, in which we agreed to build a footbridge over the River Wandle.
"In accordance with our legal agreement with the local authority, they are now required to complete the ramp down to ground level."
Saturday is the second anniversary of the appearance of the "bridge to nowhere", and residents will be marking the occasion by holding a party on the east bank complete with some "unfinished" cake.

| This "Bridge to Nowhere" reminds me of the "Staircase to Nowhere" in the sub-basement of Broadcasting House. |

Colliers Wood is just along the road from me...it might be a good thing to keep 'em in the estate!
The city of Glasgow has quite a few bridge's to nowhere built over the M8 near Charing Cross. The most famous being the bridge that they started to build before realising there was a tenement in the way, both sides of it. There's also a pedestrian bridge that halts suddenly and another was developed into an office block, possibly to avoid the embarrassment - it was one of the first things you saw as you traveled into Glasgow city centre from the north east.

Glasgow's 'Bridge to Nowhere' finally completed
A bridge over Glasgow's M8 which has been left unfinished since the 1970s has finally been completed.
The infamous 'Bridge to Nowhere' was left hanging in mid-air for decades after the shopping centre that it was meant to link to failed to materialise.
The crossing, now called the Anderston Footbridge, is being opened by the transport minister as a route over the M8 for cyclists and pedestrians.
Big Lottery Fund cash was used to complete the project.
It will link the city's Central Station to the Forth and Clyde Canal through Kelvingrove Park.
One of the project's backers, the sustainable transport charity Sustrans, hopes the crossing will now be known as the 'Bridge to Everywhere'.
John Lauder, Sustrans national director, said: "For a long time the Anderston area has been quite cut off from the city centre but thanks to the opening of the Bridge to Everywhere this is no longer the case.
"People will now be able to commute to work, travel to school, go into town and visit friends and family on foot or by bike by using the bridge and the wider network of paths which link to it.
"We believe that the bridge will be extremely popular and well used in the years to come."
Transport Minister Keith Brown said: "After more than 40 years as the Bridge to Nowhere, it is brilliant news that this infamous landmark has finally been completed and will serve as a vital link in Glasgow's network of walking and cycling routes.
"Importantly, it also provides a safe route for the community of Anderston to access the city centre and it will form part of the legacy from the Commonwealth Games.
"Road safety considerations are a barrier for many people who might be considering cycling for everyday travel, however this new route will help remove that barrier and I hope to see cycling increase in this part of Glasgow in the coming months."
The managing director of the company which finished the bridge said it was an honour to complete the missing link.
Stephen Scott, of Raynesway Construction, said: "It was an interesting engineering project, operating in a tight city environment and working in an enclosed gantry over the M8 while it remained open."

it was built by George Hudson for a projected railway line that was never built. |
