Operation Yewtree: DJ Dave Lee Travis charged with 11 counts of indecent assault
Dave Lee Travis, the former Radio 1 DJ, has been charged with 11 counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual assault, the Crown Prosecution Service has announced.
By Martin Evans, Crime Correspondent
3:49PM BST 15 Aug 2013

The 68-year-old was arrested last November by officers from Operation Yewtree, investigating allegations of historical sexual offences.
In a statement the CPS said it had authorised police to charge the DJ, under his real name David Patrick Griffin, with a range of offences dating back to 1977.
He faces 11 counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual assault on nine women aged between 15 and 29.

Alison Saunders, Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London, said: "We have carefully considered the evidence gathered by the Metropolitan Police Service as part of Operation Yewtree in relation to David Patrick Griffin, who was initially arrested on 15 November 2012 over allegations of sexual offences.
“Having completed our review, we have concluded that there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest for Mr Griffin to be charged with 11 counts of indecent assault and one of sexual assault.
“These date from 1977 to 2007 and relate to nine complainants aged between 15 and 29 at the time of the alleged offending.”

The former DJ is due to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 23.

A CPS spokesman added: “We have also decided that no further action should be taken in relation to seven separate allegations against Mr Griffin as we determined that there was insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction."
Dave Lee Travis became the fourth person arrested under Operation Yewtree when he was detained at his home in Leighton Buzzard, Beds, last November.

Mr Travis made his name as a DJ on the pirate station Radio Caroline in the mid 1960s before joining Radio 1 in 1968.
He became one of the station’s most established presenters, becoming known as the Hairy Cornflake, when he took over from Noel Edmonds as presenter of the Breakfast Show in May 1978.

He also presented Top of the Pops between 1974 and 1984, but left the Corporation in dramatic style in 1993, resigning live on air, in protest at changes being made to Radio 1.
Since then he has worked for a number of commercial radio stations, most recently appearing on the Magic Network.

Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi recently said Mr Travis’s BBC World Service music request show had given her a lifeline during her many years under house arrest.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner said, A Jolly Good Show, which was broadcast between 1981- and 2001 had made her world “much more complete”.

So how exactly is this related to the systematic grooming and rape of children in the (alleged) Savile manner? (Even if one of the victims was 15.)

If he's been groping females - or males for that matter - of course he should be convicted, but there seems to be a difference of scale of some considerable degree.

Maybe I should be off to the conspiracy version of this topic, but I'd have hoped that 'Operation Yewtree' would have investigated Savile's crimes and the people (if any) who enabled them, not some entirely different sexual misconduct that just happens to be by someone moderately famous.

According to an interview in the paper today, well-known Savile obsessive Irvine Welsh is keen to script a Jimmy Savile movie starring James McAvoy in the title role. Who the hell would have the utter lack of embarrassment to buy a ticket for that?!

It would end up being a made-for-TV movie. People would probably watch it then.

Let's face it, some people paid to watch a movie about Thatcher.

Why am I starting to imagine something like a British version of The Avengers (Marvel version) only featuring Saville, Thatcher, Diana and god knows who else.

McAvoy was asked about this a couple of weeks ago and said he had no intention of participating in such a project.

Ivan Brackenbury's hospital radio show from over two years before the allegations broke.

Watch from 09.24 - clear evidence that everyone in the business knew about it and were covering up, and no mistake.

I wasn't being serious, by the way. But it does indicate that people were hinting at dodgy proclivities on Savile's part well before the floodgates opened - and before he died, in fact.

I suppose the serious part is that this fact doesn't mean they actually 'knew' about it, though.

I don't know about that. Maybe it's different in your locality but calling someone a paedo around here is pretty damn serious... not something to be done lightly.
