I don't know if anyone else is up for this, but so much stuff in what used to be reasonable quality media these days seems to be not proofread, badly or mis spellchecked or not even that.

We had a really bad gat attack in Leeds last week.

Leeds: Tattoo clue to gat attack

I think we need a zero tolerance policy on attacking gats.

One of the men had a tattoo of a symbol or writing on his hand.

Maybe it said,"I h8 gats"

I agree the standards of proof-reading have dropped. So this thread is really shooting fish in a barrel. I often have to correct stuff I've copied and pasted in order to avoid distracting comments - which is rather sad. Sad

"Gat attack" made me think of some sort of Prohibition Era gangster thing.

The second one looks even more like spell check gone wrong.

fave gripe atm is with book publishers who release books which have been spell-checked but not sense checked..

(my typing is full of typos - I can spell but by the time it gets to my fingers things go wrong it seems.)

I was checking a report regarding a man who caused an accident when he fell asleep at the wheel of his car. By way of explanation, part of the report read. Accused said 'I'm sorry I fell asleep because I had just finished a very long shit at work'.

I suppose crimping one off may be tiring but I suggested proof reading was more likely the issue.

Here's a couple I found on Fortean Times' very own Strange Deaths;

"Hospi-tals"

and

"recept-ion"

http://www.forteantimes.com/strangedays/strangedeaths/4165/eel_enteroscopy.html

I really want to not be a pedant, and I like these so I may hyphen-ate every-thing I do from n-ow on.
Wink see what I did there?

I've seen those excess hyphens before in different places, and I think it may be an artifact of the word processing program that was originally used to write the article.
The writer may have turned on hyphenation to fit text into a narrow column size.
Then, when the text was transferred to the web page, the soft hyphens turned into hard hyphens...

I have a strange talent for proofreading!

Does anyone know how I could possibly make some money from it?

Some academic publishers hire part time proof readers. A friend of mine worked at it in Ireland.
