Sam Goodchild prepares for Solitaire du Figaro solo race
Cornish sailor Sam Goodchild is preparing to compete in the Solitaire du Figaro.
Previously called the Course de l'Aurore, it is a single-handed race which has attracted solo rowers since it started in 1970.
Mr Goodchild, 22, is taking part in the race as part of his build-up to the next Vendee Globe solo round the world yacht race in 2016.

Why would a sailor get involved in a rowing race? He isn't:
| Quote: | The Solitaire du Figaro, previously called the Course de l'Aurore, is a solo multi-stage sailing race created in 1970 by Jean-Louis Guillemard and Jean-Michel Barrault.[1] The unique character of the race, the presence of great solo sailors and its being open to amateurs, has made it one of the most cherished races in French sailing.

Poor proof-reading or poor research - sad times when you can't trust the Beeb to get some simple facts correct. |

At the end of his second year, on learning of the Dunkirk evacuation, he and a fellow cadet boarded a train from Cambridge to Chatham in order to enlist. Learning that they were officer candidates, a fellow passenger asked if they knew their sexton from their compass, so on arrival at the docks, the two young men marched into a shipwright’s and purchased both items – after demanding a lengthy tutorial.

I don't know of any shipwrights (or chandlers) that sell sextons!
(NB: interesting obit if you know Cornwall and St Michaels Mount.) |

What's happened to the Telegraph recently?
While Sir Richard was happy to reveal his specially-made underwear today, he may be less keen on the outfit he'll be asked to where next month.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelnews/9979183/Virgin-launches-domestic-services.html
The outfit?
"On May 12 he will be boarding an AirAsia flight from Perth to Kuala Lumpur dressed as a female flight attendant to fulfil a bet made with AirAsia chief executive and F1 owner Tony Fernandes. Mr Fernandes, who once worked for Sir Richard's music business, bet that his Lotus Racing team would perform better in its debut season than Virgin Racing, with the loser dressing up as a stewardess. Lotus Racing finished 10th, and Virgin 12th." |

Ireland's central bank misquotes James Joyce on limited edition coin
Ireland's central bank has made an embarrassing error on a limited edition €10 silver coin it released on Wednesday.
By Andrew Trotman
10:40PM BST 10 Apr 2013
The special coin features a picture of Irish writer James Joyce, along with a quote from his epic novel Ulysses. However, the central bank has incorrectly reprinted the passage of text.
The coin, of which 10,000 will be minted and sold for €46 each, displays the words: "Ineluctable modality of the visible: at least that if no more, thought through my eyes. Signatures of all things that I am here to read."
But the line from the third chapter of Joyce's work, published in 1922, does not contain the word "that" in the second sentence, and simply reads: "Signatures of all things I am here to read."
At the launch, central bank Governor Patrick Honohan said: "The coin's design, combining portrait and concept in an original manner, reflects Joyce's standing as one of the leading figures in the modernist movement."
The coin was struck at Mayer’s Mint, in Germany.

Now, this one's lovely. From my primary source of online entertainment, the Bristol Post (childlike journalism, bigotry-stirring editorials and unhinged readers' comments galore) comes this story, which I repost in full.
| Quote: | Few of us would act as brave Kevin did
MOST of us who spot a drink-driver drop back or pass a derisory comment to whoever is with us. We might well say that he or she will cause an accident.
But few, very few of us would intervene as Kevin Langman did.
Put yourself in his position. He could see the driver was probably drunk.
But he had only a few seconds to act when she pulled up at a red light.
Instinct took over and he boldly walked up to her car.
He had no way of knowing how she would react or indeed whether she would lash out.
What he did was brave, public spirited and quite possible life saving.
For the driver could well have gone on to crash, injuring or killing herself or quite possibly someone else.
Thanks to him she was arrested and saved from harming herself of anyone else.
She has probably reflected on that night many times since.
And hopefully now that some time has passed she will realise just how grateful she should be to Mr Langman.
For what he did almost certainly taught her the most important lesson of her life.
It is a night she will never forget and as a result she will probably never drink and drive again.

Not one single mention of what it was he actually did. You've got to hand it to them... |

It says he 'walked up to her car'. Maybe that was enough - maybe he's really, really shityerpants instantly sober type scary, or carries an assault rifle. |

The who, why, when approach to journalism.
I've been a little more thorough and have found a pic of Kevin that makes things a little clearer.
