Poking around today, I found two threads which should likely be merged.

Older Thread: Odd Weather

Current Thread: Weird Weather

Most of those are in 'IHTM', though, which means they are separate, personal recollections, while the others are distinct enough not to warrant merging.

But keeping IHTM posts sacrosanct in this way really goes against the scientific ethos of myself, and, I hope, that of anyone who is not of a fluffy woo-woo disposition.

However can we get a handle on weird stuff if it's all split up into separate little packets? We need to bundle it together so that we can compare stuff - "Ah, the thing that happened to Wossname is very similar to what happened to Thingamajig!"

I suggest we abolish IHTM, and spread the posts throughout the appropriate threads - ghosts, UFOs, monsters, whatever...

Never!

Honestly, I think IHTM is a very special sort of area. This is a place that we can share things that we have direct experience of. It's a coming-together, of sorts.

In fact, though I've said it before, it bears repeating, for the first couple of years on this forum, I never knew there were other topics besides IHTM.

Combining relevant threads withing IHTM makes sense. If one person has a creepy doll story, someone else probably has one too, and I'd like to read them all in one place. However, if someone posts about Robert The Doll, that certainly deserves a separate, no less equally fascinating, thread in another area.

I suggest we keep IHTM, abolish the Human Condition (so to speak) and redistribute threads in Fortean News which are now 'olds'.

Of course, I have no interest in the hours of dull work this would entail!

My point about IHTM is that it has no focus. In fact, many of the stories in other, more focussed threads are "separate, personal recollections", but they are no less valuable or interesting for not being in IHTM!

For instance, many stories in Strange Folk start off by saying something like "Once I saw a man/woman/indeterminate person who...", but it would be foolish to take these out and make them threadlets under IHTM.

All reported stories in the media are about people's experiences, over the whole wide range of possibilities, and not a few improbabilities! Whether people write down their own experiences, or reporters write them down instead, in the end they're all just stories. In my opinion, IHTM is not a useful category, and most of the stories there could go into more defined topic areas.

Curses! My evil master-plan has been revealed!

Actually, it's IHTM that's Everything - everything from lights in the sky to assorted brain farts! As I said before, it has no focus.

The focus is, personal anecdotes of brushes with the unusual, or the uncanny. By far, most people's favourite part of the Fortean Times. Whether in the magazine, or on the message board. It's not very scientific, but it is popular.
