I was born at the very end of the Fifties, so my nostalgic childhood memories include an awful lot of odd stuff. I do remember staying up with my mother to watch, That Was The Week That Was, with Milicent Martin singing the topical theme song.

Amongst my earliest TV memories were these great shows:

And this one, weirdly wonderful:

The Fifties and Sixties had some great TV for kids. The theme tunes alone can still evoke a powerful emotional charge.

Did Maid Marion wear a cocktail dress in all the episodes?

I was growing up with Romlingane, known as Clangers in UK in the beginning of the 70s:

Nostalgia! Just as good as it used to be.
My favourite series was the underwater puppet drama Stingray. As an adult, I can now see why Troy Tempest preferred Marina to Altlanta who seemed to be a bit of a breakfast boozer and her hairdo always looked like she'd just rolled out of bed. No class.

I loved the way that at the end of an episode, they'd all sit around in the Marineville cocktail bar smoking brightly coloured cigarettes. That's why they can't show it anymore. You couldn't really have them hanging around the outside of the facility sneaking a fag before going on duty could you?

I had a box set on vhs (remember that?) which had an episode where Troy was being tortured by Titan. Passage of time cut to Phones, still in the cell putting another cigarette out under his foily futuristic boot.

Maybe now we're in the future, there's some sort of central reserve of knowledge we could go to and find out if it's on DVD and if all episodes from the series are on it. But I guess we may as well wish for a flying car.

I can remember when The Clangers seemed absolutely new and cutting edge. I remember when this one started on Watch With Mother, too.

Great stuff! Smile

Amazon still lists a 'Stingray - The Complete Series' 5-DVD set with 39 episodes. (NOTE: This is not the only set listed.)

There's no mention of the episodes being edited, and some of the customer reviews mention smoking.

In Norway we had puppet show for kids on national TV which traumatised a whole generation. It's from the early 70s. I wasn't that traumatised, but I remember I was watching it with bewilderment and amusement.

Pompel & Pilt - The repairers are coming

The Ingmar Bergman Puppet Show!

Meanwhile, children in Britain were being unsettled right from the opening bars of Picture Box.

I used to love this programme. Is it any wonder I turned out as I did?

Arghhh! Pinky and Perky, the Helium pigs, repulsive then and now.

I had forgotten what a precocious little hater I was but those charmless singing pigs were a good place to embark on a career of futile carping! tongue

Pommel & Pilt look like they might work in a nocturnal slaughterhouse. They really should have met the other P. & P. for a Special! Evil or Very Mad

I remember being very young and watching Pinky and Perky, and thinking 'this is weird shit' (or similar but less sweary words).
