An opportunity for some armchair monster spotting! Wink

Olympic torch relay: Flame to travel across Loch Ness

The Olympic torch will be transported by boat across Loch Ness as part of its journey from Glasgow to Inverness on day 22 of the relay.
The freshwater loch is famous for alleged sightings of the Loch Ness Monster, affectionately named "Nessie".

Saturday's 169-mile route will include the banks of Loch Lomond, where the flame will be carried on to Luss Pier, and the Nevis Centre in Fort William.
After 92 torchbearers have carried the flame there will be a celebration.

Starting the day at the Glasgow Riverside Museum, the torch will visit The Tall Ship and be taken on board The Glenlee - one of only five Clyde-built ships still afloat in the world today and the only one of her kind in the UK.

The flame will then be carried through the village of Luss and onto the pier by Loch Lomond, which is the biggest freshwater lake in Great Britain.

In Fort William, the second largest settlement in the Scottish Highlands, the flame will visit the Nevis Centre, in close proximity to Ben Nevis - the highest mountain in the British Isles.

At about 14:30 BST the flame will travel across Loch Ness by boat from Fort Augustus to Drumnadrochit.

During the journey, the flame will pass Urquhart Castle and visit the Rockness Festival at Dores.

In all, the torch will pass through 17 communities: Glasgow, Bearsden, Clydebank, Dumbarton, Luss, Tarbet, Crianlarich, Tyndrum, Glencoe, North Ballachulish, Fort William, Spean Bridge, Fort Augustus, Invermoriston, Lewiston, Drumnadrochit and Inverness.

etc...

With our pictures down, Quiraing tweets: "@BBC2012 sadly, I think #bbctorchcam may miss some of Scotland's most beautiful scenery today because of patchy 3G coverage..."

Spooky how something always interferes with sightings of the paranormal! Shocked

(Actually, the pics are back, for now...)

The pics are back, and we're approaching the Loch.

(But as usual, the pics, the map, and the Live text are poorly coordinated.. Rolling Eyes )

I spoke too soon - the pics have gone again! No, they're back...

I'll never see Nessie like this! Sad

The pic is either of something quite small, or it was taken from some height - much higher than would be possible on George Edwards' boat.

So I'm sceptical.

The bit that sticks out the water is quite thin for how high it is, so it must be large part of a small animal than vice versa ...

Indeed, now that you mention it the angle and the height to width ratio make it look more like a breaching sockeye salmon than Nessie.

I thought "otter" but don't know if there's enough for them to eat in Loch Ness.

He says it was about half a mile away. That's nothing like half a mile, more like a few feet. There is no disturbance where object and water meet either, none at all, which implies it isn't moving.
Anyone else remember when the press used to call this time of year Silly Season?

I do believe he may have captured Nessie having a bit of a swim outside the Loch. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-19304810 Wink

She's been for a bit of a paddle in Dorset. Very Happy

Quote:
IT’S been cold, wet, the economy is still in the doldrums, and winter is on its way – but a prankster has managed to put smiles on the faces of visitors to Poole Park.

A note written on the back of a paper bag and pushed through the door of the Daily Echo’s Poole office alerted us to a new attraction.

It said: “There’s some sort of really big fish thing stuck in the model boating part of Poole Park Lake!”

And sure enough, when we investigated, the lake had acquired its own version of the Loch Ness monster, positioned just far enough out that it could not be removed without wading into the water.

Small children spotting the head emerging from the water rushed towards it pointing and shouting with excitement. Even some of the adults seemed impressed.

Model boat enthusiast John Wakely said: “I think it’s great, I really do. It seems to be fixed to a metal post, so obviously someone has been in there up to their thighs.”

Fellow racer Graham Lockyer did not even seem to resent the fact that his model yacht became temporarily stuck behind the painted figure. “Some student has put that up. It’s rather fun,” he said.

Another said: “It gets in the way of the sailing ... but as long as it clears up the weed.”

Childminder Jacqueline Brookes, out for a walk with some of her charges, said: “It’s cute for the kids, but they could have made it a bit more rubbery and real.”

Jan Clark, walking with her three-year-old grand-daughter Rebecca Footner, said: “The children love it. I think it’s somebody’s idea of a practical joke. It’s a talking point.”

The identity of the japester is so far unknown, but if you would like to confess, you know how to find us.
