OK, so so far it's come out that Jimmel Fixit has abused kids all over the country, including the Haut de La Garenne childern's home in the Channel Islands. 60 possible victims since 1959, according to the latest as of posting.

A friend of the Thatchers.

A friend of Prince Charles.

And yet apparently free to nonce his way round Britain for decades until finally dead. Former colleagues have spoken of him bribing police officers.

I think one can assume he made 'friendships' with powerful people as a form of protection - from their point of view I expect they though of him as just another pushy celeb.

If he couldn't turn on the charm when he needed to then he wouldn't have been in the public eye as he was. To have a career as he had - like other infamous men - he must have been highly intelligent, manipulative and ruthless.

One wonders what the Royal and PM bodyguard/vetting people were doing. I don't think you can blame either the Thatchers or Price Charles for taking him at face value - they won't have been as close to him day to day as, say , his colleagues at the BBC. And I don't suppose either of them would listen to public bar gossip.

Yes, I think we can go with this. The existing thread purely for the Savile investigation, this one for wider cover-up, bigger picture, aforementioned Icke-isms, etc. If it falls to bits we'll reassess it.

I'm not so sure. Names are going to come up. Nobody's going to sue for being called a lizard, but people get a bit touchy about being associated with the other thing.

Anyway... I've just seen on the BBC that a former BBC executive, Derek Chinnery, asked Savile about the rumours 20 years ago. Savile said 'Oh, it's nonsense!' and that was that.

Liz Dux is a solicitor who specialises in abuse cases. She is not impressed by this exchange and says that Chinnery should have taken it directly to the Director General as it concerned the criminal act of sexual assault.

Seems that Chinnery's story corroborates the victims' possible claims against the BBC as being 'vicariously liable', ie that they were abused by Savile while he was acting as the BBC's agent.

Sounds like stupidity or at least naivete to me, on Chinnery's part.

Incidentally, a careful reading of Dux' later statements might be revealing. She says that she been asked about compensation by alleged victims only of Savile. To me, that faintly suggests that a victim of alleged abuse by a living person might go direct to the police. We have indeed heard whispers of still-living alleged offenders.

I think it reflects the human instinct not to want to know horrible things. Also, we are very much creatures of habit, as Derren Brown, for example, shows. It is a very rare individual (especially British or Irish) who would acknowledge that the emperor is naked, let alone naked with a young girl. Any of these scandals, from Shoot to Kill, Kincora, North Wales Homes and Hillsborough, all display the same mix of small-scale evil and large-scale obfuscation and burying one's head in the sand.

We can slander/libel/defame/ Savile as much as we like though, as he's dead.

I for one have no trouble believing that he like to make teenage girls stick their fingers up his bum while masturbating him, having seen him week after week on top Of The Pops surrounding himself with teenage girls, who made him look by comparison not hip and glamorous but old and sleazy.

Other R1 DJs looked wholesome even to a green teenager like me. David 'Diddy' Hamilton was short, Tony Blackburn told awful jokes and Dave Lee Travis, er, had a beard. Can't remember hearing any acandal about them!

IIRC the notorious Chris Morris show did not feature Savile, though a number of DJs were among those fooled into making ridiculous claims about paedophiles sharing the same genetic code as crabs etc!

Morris did, however, prophetically announce the death of Savile on a radio show in 1994:
