Yup. It's amazing at how things used to be done. I'm a victim of abuse and when I told a psychiatric nurse (about 1997ish) I was made to feel like I was making it up Sad I was also told by several members of the health profession that I sould probably just move on. These things do happen, sadly.

And if the previous post that I've just removed really does refer to something that sensitive, then I'll have to check with my fellow mods on the matter. Sorry.

John Lydon may have simply been in wind-up mode at the time. He does that all the time, he's a bit of a wit.

Absolutely. Nearly 30 years ago, when I told my Health Visitor about some child abuse that I'd heard was going on in my then husband's extended family, I expected something - anything - to be done, but nothing happened.

I assumed that things were being quietly taken care of, but a couple of years later I heard that it was still going on. This time I rang the NSPCC, who quite properly got straight on to the police, and the offender was arrested in no time and was eventually imprisoned.

These days both kids and adults are listened to, if not immediately believed. It's a big improvement.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2366576/Revealed-Lady-Thatchers-FIVE-attempts-secure-knighthood-Jimmy-Savile.html

Margaret Thatcher made repeated attempts to win a knighthood for Jimmy Savile despite warnings about his ‘manner of life’.
The former prime minister made at least five requests for the now-disgraced DJ to be considered for the top honour, but senior civil servants voiced fears about his ‘strange and complex’ private life.
Previously unseen documents from the Cabinet Office reveal the extent of unease about the BBC presenter, almost three decades before he was finally unmasked as a predatory paedophile.

the top honour

There is a significant number of honours above a knighthood.

Well, to consider only Knighthoods, a baronet (hereditary knighthood) is higher than a Knight Bachelor. And that's before we get into peerages and the various orders of chivalry.

The highest is "DJ", usually applied at the end of a name.
