This is an account told to me by my father. It's always intrigued me. Before I delve into the story, I want to say I'd describe my dad as level-headed, a bit skeptical about most things, and pretty up-front.
When my dad was younger, he often hung out with his mates in London. He'd often spend hours at a time out, especially in school holidays, and sometimes would leave home at breakfast only to return at dinner time. This was back in the 50's.
One particular day, he was desperate for the toilet and he was far from home, so he decided to go to one of the local public toilets. His friends waited outside while he went in alone.
He said he went in, and the whole place seemed empty. The doors of cubicles were all open, and he could hear nobody else. He went into a cubicle, used the toilet, and when he came out and started to wash his hands, he noticed in the mirror that one of the toilet doors behind him was now closed over. He never heard anybody come in - and even now the place was quiet.
Suddenly, he felt something grab the back of his legs. He jerked, frightened, and looked down. He said he saw the most enormous pair of grey hands coming out from under the toilet door, and they were moving forward, as if to try to grab him.
My dad said he was absolutely terrified, that the hands looked very real to him; hairy and veiny, and he pulled away, and ran from the toilet screaming to high-heavens!
I don't know what happened after that... My dad says he was scared, he truly believed what he saw looked real, and he went straight home.
He says he has never forgotten this encounter. He says he realises that people will say it was someone wearing gloves, but he said the sheer size, life-like appearance and way the "being" came in unheard or noticed by friends, makes him wonder if it was real... !! |

| It could have been a large gentleman looking for enforced company - were the hands definitely bigger than any reasonably-sized person might have? |

Or it could have been the shock of seeing them making a grab for him from under a toilet door.
Welcome to the forum hauntedheart. I've got a feeling that this message will be moved to it happened to me though. |

gncxx - It could have just been a larger gentlemen, trying to grab my dad, but I can only go through the memory of what I've been told... He said the impression that lasted most to him was the size, and the grey colour and hair on it etc.
Oldrover - Thanks for the welcome |

All together now:
"But the hands we love so dear are the hands we love to hear
Are the hands that you give to us . . .
Everybody, that's nice, thank you . . . *"
Well I've heard a few Haunted Cottage tales in my time . . .

The song that sprang to my mind was -
Giant hands grab my father
Father grabs giant hands
Giant hands grab my father
Father grabs giant hands
etc
Don't we have a thread on haun'ed toilets somewhere? I seem to have read lots of posts about them. Hospital toilets are heaving with the things! |

That seems pretty likely, the shock could easily have made the hands appear bigger than they are. The guy could have been hidden away somewhere and quietly snuck into the cubicle. To be honest this is probably more scary than it being a ghost... |

Hey everyone! Thanks for your comments, and thanks for the welcome
My dad told me this when I was still quite young myself, and I remember at the time wishing he hadn't.... I've hated public toilets ever since, and not just because of the bad smell lol.
I now have a habit of peering to see which doors are shut or open etc.
I looked online to try to match my dad's experience with others from the area he lived. There seems to be plenty of "ghostly" hand stories and legends, nothing specific though. Just general legends from all over the UK. |
