That's exactly what Proust describes in his famous "In remembrance of times past". He sees that as the tragedy of the "inverts" who fall in love with men who cannot reciprocate the affections.

Women in Togo have called a week-long sex strike, starting on Monday, to demand the president's resignation.
The ban has been called by opposition coalition Let's Save Togo, which groups together nine civil society groups and seven opposition parties and movements.
Opposition leader Isabelle Ameganvi said that sex could be a "weapon of the battle" to achieve political change.
The coalition wants President Faure Gnassingbe, whose family has held power for decades, to stand down.
"We have many means to oblige men to understand what women want in Togo," Ms Ameganvi, leader of the women's wing of the coalition, told the BBC.
She said she had been inspired by a similar strike by Liberian women in 2003, who used a sex strike to campaign for peace.
"If men refuse to hear our cries we will hold another demonstration that will be more powerful than a sex strike," she added.
'Like fasting'
Togo has been run by the same family for more than four decades.
President Faure Gnassingbe took power in 2005 following the death of his father, Gnassingbe Eyadema, who ruled Togo for 38 years. The president was re-elected in 2010.
The strike was announced at a rally on Saturday in Lome, attended by thousands of people.
The rally was held to protest against recent electoral reforms, which demonstrators say will make it easier for Mr Gnassingbe's party to win re-election in the parliamentary polls set for October.
Activists say that the strike will motivate men who are not involved in the political movement to pursue its goals, which include an end to the system allowing unlimited presidential terms.
Earlier this month, two anti-Gnassingbe protests were dispersed by police using tear gas and more than 100 people were arrested.
The sex strike was welcomed as a political tool by some women in Lome.
"It's a good thing for us women to observe this sex strike as long as our children are in jail now. I believe that by observing this, we will get them released," Abla Tamekloe told the Associated Press.
"For me, it's like fasting, and unless you fast, you will not get what you want from God." |

She has admitted to keeping the items in her apartment but has denied any wrongdoing, a spokeswoman for the prosecution said.
"During the summer of 2012 (she) sold three skulls and a spine... to a person in Uppsala," the prosecutor said in the indictment.
"My morals set my limits and I'm prepared to take the punishment if something should happen. It's worth it," the woman wrote in a post on an Internet forum a few years ago, according to daily newspaper Goeteborgsposten.
"I want my man like he is, whether he is dead or alive. He allows me to find sexual happiness on the side," added the woman, who has said she is in a relationship.
The access code to a morgue was also found in the apartment, the paper said, citing a press conference held by the prosecutor on Tuesday.
A preliminary court-ordered psychiatric evaluation found the woman to be legally sane. |

Germany's ruling coalition is calling for a ban on bestiality - or the practice of having sex with animals.
The German parliament's agriculture committee is considering making it an offence not only to hurt an animal but also to force it into unnatural sex. Offenders could face a hefty fine.
A final vote will be held in the Bundestag (lower house) on 14 December.
Germany legalised bestiality (zoophilia) in 1969, except when the animal suffered "significant harm".
But animal rights groups have campaigned for a change in the law and Hans-Michael Goldmann, the head of the parliamentary committee investigating the new amendment, told the Tageszeitung newspaper that the new legislation was intended to clarify the current legal position.
"With this explicit ban, it will be easier to impose penalties and to improve animal protection."
A fine of up to 25,000 euros (£20,000) is proposed if someone forces an animal to commit "actions alien to the species".

But Michael Kiok, the chairman of the pressure group Zoophile Engagement for Tolerance and Information (Zeta), said he was going to take legal action to fight the proposed changes.
"It is unthinkable that any sexual act with an animal is punished without proof that the animal has come to any harm," he said, adding that animals are capable of showing what they do, or do not, want to do.
"We see animals as partners and not as a means of gratification. We don't force them to do anything. Animals are much easier to understand than women," Mr Kiok claimed.
Bestiality is banned in many European countries, including the Netherlands, France and Switzerland.
The law was changed in the UK in 2003, which reduced the maximum sentence from life imprisonment to two years.
The act however, is permissible in Belgium, Denmark and Sweden, though Stockholm is considering a change in the legislation. |
