Porn companies sue to overturn Los Angeles condom law
Two major US porn companies have taken legal action to try to overturn a law requiring porn actors in Los Angeles County to wear condoms.
Vivid Entertainment and Califa Productions say the measure violates the guarantee of free speech in the US constitution's First Amendment.
The law, known as Measure B, was approved by voters in November.
The measure was supported by the Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF), which said it would shield actors from HIV.
"Overturning this law is something I feel very passionate about," Steven Hirsch, founder of the Vivid Entertainment, told AFP news agency.
"I believe the industry's current testing system works well," he added.
Porn actors Kayden Kross and Logan Pierce are joining the challenge against the law.
Measure B expanded to county level an ordinance which had already been passed in the city of Los Angeles, requiring condom use as a condition of receiving a filming permit there.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa signed that measure into law in January 2012.
Adult production companies have threatened to move out of California because of the requirement, but face legal difficulties.
A 1988 ruling by the California Supreme Court prevented producers from being prosecuted under anti-prostitution laws, and only one other state - New Hampshire - has a similar ruling.
Adult film productions in the LA area have been suspended in the past because of HIV scares.
Critics of the condom requirement say actors are regularly tested, and such a requirement would hurt business and push production studios underground.
"We found that a lot of viewers at home don't want to see condom porn," Keiran Lee, a British porn actor in Los Angeles, told BBC's Newsbeat in January last year.

The University of Exeter's students' guild is investigating after two students were allegedly caught having sex on camera
Tuesday January 15 2013
An investigation is under way at one of the country's leading universities after students were alleged to have been caught having intercourse on camera during a safe sex ball.
The University of Exeter's students' guild has begun to look into the incident after footage from the event, during which an apparently naked couple appear to be having sex, was circulated on the internet.
The charity event was held just before Christmas.
A union spokesman said in a statement: "The students' guild recognises that confidential CCTV footage has been filmed without our permission.
"The guild is making sure the affected parties will be supported during this difficult time.
"Measures were in place to provide high levels of security, but we are aware that irresponsible behaviour has taken place and we are working hard to rectify the situation.
"A full investigation is under way in which action proportionate to the seriousness of the situation will be taken."
The university said it would be making no further comment.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed it had no plans to investigate the matter because a complaint of alleged criminal activity had not been made.
The University of Exeter recently accepted an invitation to join the Russell Group, which represents the UK's leading research-intensive institutions, while it has also been named in the top ten of several recent "good university" guides. |

Ha ha!
I went to Exeter, but even before I got there my Hall of Residence made the national papers in a story involving the drains being blocked by condoms!
(The fact that back in the 60s Exeter had pretty much the highest ratio of female to male students makes this rather predictable!
I, however, being of a philosophical nature, spent much of my time on Dartmoor... ) |

| Quote: | Researchers find gender bias in sexual cannibalism papers
January 17th, 2013 in Biology / Plants & Animals
(Phys.org)—A trio of biologists, Liam Dougherty, Emily Burdfield-Steel and David Shuker from the U.K.'s University of St Andrews, School of Biology, have found that when researchers write papers that are published in scientific journals, they tend to use gender biased terminology to describe acts of sexual cannibalism. In their paper, published in the journal Animal Behavior, they suggest that gender stereotypical word choices can cloud study results and lead to inaccurate results.
When authors use words like "rapacious," "predatory," "voracious," or even "aggressive" to describe the behavior of a female spider when she eats a male – before, during or after sex – the team says, it adds an ingredient to an observation that might not actually exist. In a similar vein, describing the male in such a scenario as "willing to sacrifice himself" implies a degree of nobility that may or not actually be the case. There is no way to know what either spider is feeling or if it's feeling anything at all – a necessary ingredient for ascribing emotional actions to any living creature. In most cases, it appears likely both genders are simply behaving in ways that are most conducive to the carrying on of their species.
To come to these conclusions, the researchers poured over 47 published research papers that covered sexual cannibalism, highlighting every instance of words that described the behavior of the male or female. Next, they focused most particularly on the use of active/reactive words in such descriptions and contrasted the different ways that the behavior of the two genders was described.
They found that authors overwhelmingly represented the behavior of females in active terms, while describing the males using mostly reactive words. The overall impression authors give, they say, is of dominant females terrorizing males culminating sometimes, in an act of cannibalism.
The problem with using such words, the authors argue, is that it degrades the science. It's a form of anthropomorphism, and as with any other science, has no place in good research. They suggest that ways be found by authors to describe such activities without resorting to loaded words that add emotional heft to a paper, but little in the way of actual science.

Abstract
There is a long-standing debate within the field of sexual selection regarding the potential projection of stereotypical sex roles onto animals by researchers. It has been argued that this anthropomorphic view may be hampering research in this area, for example by prioritizing the study of male sexual adaptations over female ones. We investigated how males and females are described in the sexual cannibalism literature. Sexual cannibalism is a specific form of sexual conflict and is highly gendered, with females generally cannibalizing males. We found that females were more likely to be described using active words and males with reactive words. This is contrary to recent results from a survey of the sexual conflict literature. While this reversed gender bias may arise from the nature of sexual cannibalism, our results nevertheless indicate an alternative form of sexual stereotyping. A number of the words used to describe cannibalistic females were highly loaded and suggestive of a negative stereotype of sexually aggressive females. To make progress we suggest first that animal behaviour researchers recognize both the costs and benefits of looking for general patterns as part of the scientific method. Although necessary, the search for general patterns may validate existing stereotypes or provide the basis for new ones. Additionally, we suggest that the field of sexual behaviour research is neither wholly bad nor good in terms of language use but that we should work towards a consensus of how and when we use particular terms to describe sexual behaviour.

Sea slug's 'disposable penis' surprises
By Rebecca Morelle, Science reporter, BBC World Service
A sea slug that is able to detach, re-grow and then re-use its penis has surprised scientists.
Japanese researchers observed the bizarre mating behaviour in a species called Chromodoris reticulata, which is found in the Pacific Ocean.
They believe this is the first creature known that can repeatedly copulate with what they describe as a "disposable penis".
The study is published in the Royal Society's journal Biology Letters.
The sex life of the sea slug is complicated even before detachable organs come into play.
Almost all of these creatures, which are also known as nudibranchs, are thought to be "simultaneous hermaphrodites". This means they have both male and female sexual organs and can use them both at the same time.
Bernard Picton, curator of marine invertebrates at the National Museums Northern Ireland, explained: "The general apparatus is on the right hand side of the body. So two nudibranchs come together and one faces one way and one faces the other way, with the right hand side of their bodies touching.
"The penis from one fits into the female opening of the other one, and the penis from that one fits into the female opening of the first one, if you see what I mean.
"They are both donating sperm to the other one."
But the finding that one species has added another layer of complexity to copulation surprised the sea slug expert.
"I haven't seen anything like this before," he said.
The Japanese team observed sea slugs that they had collected from shallow coral reefs around Japan. They saw the animals mate 31 times.
The act took between a few seconds and a few minutes, after which the creatures would push away and shed their penises, leaving them on the floor of the tank.
However, the researchers were surprised to discover that just 24-hours later, the sea slugs had regenerated their male organs and were able to mate again.
Closer examination of the animals' anatomy revealed that the sea slugs had a large part of their penis coiled up in a spiral inside their bodies, which they would then use to replenish their missing part.
The scientists also noted that the penis was also equipped with spines.
At most, the animals were able to copulate three times in succession, with each bout separated by about 24 hours.
It was not clear whether once the internal penis was used up after these attempts whether the animal's sex life - at least the male part of it - was effectively over or whether after a few weeks or months the organ could re-grow.
Sea slugs are not the only animals who abandon their penis.
Orb weaving spiders are known to lose their male organs after sex, as does a sea creature called the periwinkle and land slugs belonging to the genus Ariolimax.
However the researchers believe that Chromodoris reticulata is the first creature known that can re-grow its appendage - and its disposable penis gives it a sexual advantage.
The Japanese team says that in the first act of copulation the penis may be used to remove any sperm left by any competitors that its partner has mated with.
With the first penis and the rival sperm then abandoned - the second penis can be used to inject the sea slug with another dose of its own sperm, ensuring that their genes are the ones that are passed on.
Mr Picton said: "They do have very, very complicated biology - and a lot have awfully complicated things in terms of reproduction."

Boyfriend of Alisa Massaro claims she had 'wanted to have sex with a dead guy' for years
An 18-year-old woman apparently ‘obsessed with necrophilia’ has been accused of having three-way sex on top of the corpses of two men she and her sexual partners allegedly murdered.
A police investigation into a brutal double murder in the town of Joilet, Illinois is said to have found that the bodies of 22-year-old’s Eric Glover and Terence Rankins were placed in a pile after being strangled, so that Alisa Massaro could lie on them to have sex.
One the men in the group of accused murderers, 24-year-old Joshua Miner, apparently said he was the long-term boyfriend of Massaro, adding that “for years back she wanted to have sex with a dead guy”.
He is reported to have said that he had hoped to help Massaro with her fantasy by offering to have sex with her on top of the bodies of the two men he is accused of helping to kill.
According to police reports apparently seen by JoiletPatch.com, Massaro smirked at Milner’s offer and said she didn’t want to, although she “later acknowledged she and Josh did have sexual intercourse on top of the two bodies”.
According to the documents, fellow murder accused Adam Landerman may well have joined in with the copulating couple.
According to the Daily Mail, 19-year-old Landerman is the son of a local police sergeant.
There are various accounts surrounding the double murder, as the four accused, Massaro, Milner, Landerman and 18-year-old Bethany McKee, have given the police differing versions of what happened.
According to McKee, Milner was the ringleader who came up with the plan to brutally murder Mr Glover and Mr Rankins.
She apparently said Landerman was simply a “follower” who did whatever Milner told him to do.
The police reports suggest Landerman jumped on the dead men’s bodies and “surfed”, causing the corpses to empty their bowels and emit “zombie noises”.
Police Chief Mike Trafton said: “This is one of the most brutal, upsetting things I’ve ever seen in my 27-years in law enforcement”.
He added: “Not only is this a crime scene, but the disregard for common decency towards human beings.”
Mr Rankins mother called the killings “demonic” and “evil”, and told how her son and Mr Glover had been friends since childhood.
Although the circumstance of the murder are still under investigation, police have reported said they believe drugs were involved.
Massaro’s father is said to have been shocked by what his daughter has been accused of, saying: “I don’t know what happened…I’m too devastated and I can’t talk about it.”
He apparently added: “All I can say is it’s a terrible thing that happened sand I can’t believe my daughter had anything to do with it.” |

Porn addict has emergency surgery to remove live EEL he inserted up his backside to copy x-rated film
Daily Mirror. Natalie Evans. 10 Apr 2013
The 39-year-old man rushed himself to A&E at a hospital in southern China when he couldn't get the creature out following the kinky stunt
Dangerous: The live eel that was removed from the man's body
A porn addict had to have emergency surgery to remove a live EEL from inside his body after he inserted it up his backside to copy an x-rated movie.
The 39-year-old man rushed himself to A&E at a hospital in southern China when he couldn't get the creature out following the kinky stunt.
The single man told stunned medics at hospital casualty unit in Shunde, Guangdong province: "Please, please help me. The eel is moving through my body."
Surgeons finally removed the 20 inch long Asian swamp eel - which weighed more than half a kilo - in the early hours of the morning after a lengthy treatment with drugs and medical probes.
X-ray: The image shows the eel inside the man's body
"The eel was simply trying to find it's way out," explained one of the medical team.
"It was still alive when we got it out but it died soon afterwards, which was probably a mercy.
"This was a particularly idiotic stunt and could have caused him a serious injury. Eels have small but very sharp teeth."
A police spokesman said: "We are aware of what happened and a 39-year-old man will be interviewed over alleged animal cruelty." |
