Tuvalu is sinking - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/2219001.stm
My personal theory is that it's because they sold their top-level domain *.tv a few years back. With the domain now belonging to a US company, there's no more reason for the nation to exist, so... |

| Interesting estimate of global sea level rise - 88 cm (34") within the next century that's the biggest estimate I've seen yet. Rather puts the US EPA's estimates out (12" by 2025, 24" within 100 years of that) I hope people in Louisiana are good at swimming, especially since Grand Isle is sinking rapidly (eqivalent to 44" per century anyway) |

...and word has it that the Tuvaluans are stalking the Earth Summit garnering suport for a class-action suit against the Kyoto naysayers, presumably for willful negligence resulting in the destruction of a nation or two.
Go Tuvalu!

The highest point in the the State of Florida is 119 feet above sea level (36.3 metres).
Bush doesn't plan to do anything radical about global warming (like support the Kyoto accord) but is prepared to spend billions to mitigate the results of global warming at some future time (presumably for Bubba Jeb).
Lifeboats are for the exclusive use of the First Class Passengers. The other two or three billion at risk from rising sea levels can suck salt water.
Crazy like a fox: don't outrage your supporters by saving the world now but dangle the prospect of monies that make Agricultural subsidies look like chump change in front of their beady little eyes--and with any luck, you'll be out of office by then, so somebody else has to make the hard decisions, such as whether to save all of the coast or just the bits that are own by Bushes. |

Yes, Florida is just a glorified sand-spit. Sea level rise will not only be problematic in itself, but would dramatically increase hurricane damage by allowing storm waves to sweep inland. |

| One thing that is not often pointed out is that sea level rise is median sea level rise. There will greater rises in the levels of High tides. |
