More here:

Ancient Ritual- Mummers (kukeri, Babugeri), Bulgaria
Slavini 5 Jan 2010

On New Year's Eve and Zagovezni in Bulgaria special rituals called Mummer's games take place.
The Mummer's games are performed by men only.
They put on special masks hand-made by each of the participants.

etc...

(With pics.)

Something similar in Britain might be the Padstow Obby Oss.

So this should really be in Urban Legends/Folklore... MODS!

They're like a cross between 'Cousin It' and a Womble.
My friend who lives in Bulgaria has never mentioned this.

Mummers from Bulgaria?

Being a USAian, Philadelphia is what comes to mind.
Similar but different. Once Rynner made the connection, it seems to fit pretty well.
