Intellectual property rights vary from country to country and over time, and the legal state of the internet is in constant flux. Generally speaking, public utterances are news and can be repeated, and if an utterance isn't public on the internet, what does "public" mean? I long ago adopted the policy of not writing down anything I wasn't willing to see in print with my name attached.

The best thing, I think, would be to go with courtesy and common sense ethics. Direct quotes should be attributed and sourced, and some indication of context provided. For extended quotes, or in-depth discussions of an individual's statement, treat it as if it had appeared in print: i.e., it is fair to quote directly, with attribution, as much as you need to make your own point; but if you need to take more than half of a long work to make your point you need to rethink your piece.

It'll open the flood gates I tell you; I reckon, with a little bit of cherry-picking, there's an entire weekly tabloid column just waiting to be cut and pasted from some of these threads.

I'll start them off:

Change, who needs it? Why can't they just leave things like they never were in the first place?
