Morning, folks!

Does anyone know where this quote from Eliphas Levi comes from?

“Man is himself the creator of his heaven or hell, and there are no demons except his own follies.”

I'm hoping to use it as an epigram on a short story I've written (and it has to be with the editor in 3 days - eek!) but can't seem to find which book its from, or if its in the public domain.

I'd be hugely grateful if anyone knows offhand which book its included in, or could point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance! Smile

The original text would have been written in French, wouldn't it?

It is from Dogme et Rituel, originally two separate volumes published in 1854 & 1856.
Waite translated them as Transcendental Magic, its Doctrine & Ritual in 1896.

The quote in its context is on a site that I cannot get to display directly but it is cached on Google Here Smile

edit: I see it is also available in many different formats, free on archive.org:

The passage appears on the last page (149) of:

Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie
Part II: The Ritual of Transcendental Magic
By Eliphas Levi (Alphonse Louis Constant)
Translated by A. E. Waite.
Originally published by Rider & Company, England, 1896.
