What I am about to describe happened to me and a friend of mine many years ago. I remember it vividly even though it must have been nearly 40 years back.
It took place in a grave yard in Barnet North London. It was a barmy warm early evening and my friend and I were walking through the grave yard on our way home from School - both of us lived in the same street which was no more than about half a mile from the school. Being a little mischievous (as 8 or 9 year old boys can be) we started throwing flowers at each other off some of the graves. Looking back at best it was disrespectful and at worse it was vandalism. Anyway both he and I were having great fun throwing these flowers at each other - so much so that we failed to see, standing no more than 10 feet away a witch sitting there laughing at us.
The thing is - the witch was exactly as you would think a witch should be - she sat there with the black cape, pointy black hat, black cat on her lap and the broom stick resting up against the boiling cauldron. There was absolutely no way she could have just walk up and sat herself down like that - she just appeared. Laughing at us. Both my friend and I just stared at her for what seemed like minutes but must have been no more than about 10 seconds and then we just ran as fast as we could out of the grave yard.
its the most bizarre thing I have ever seen.
Both of us to this day remember it well - I wonder - has anyone else had a similar experience? |

Yep,
This is very familiar. Over 50 years ago my sister and I saw a witch (black coat, pointy hat, broomstick, sitting on top of next door's house laughing at us. We ran away. We still remember and talk about it |

Fine idea, but does it explain how more than one person experienced it at the same time? |

OK this is seriously nuts. I mean the event, not the people posting it! As I understand it, this "Hollywood" archetype witch is a pop culture fabrication, a cartoonish portrayal of witches with little basis in reality. So assuming Madseller and Plusky aren't just BS-ing us all, what's going on here? Since I don't believe in the likelihood of shared hallucinations is this some trickster entity that gets its jollies from scaring the **** out of kids by appearing in a form they'll identify as scary??
Edit I meant "shared" hallucinations

| Could it have been an older school girl just having some fun? Maybe she was dressed up and hiding there just waiting for a couple young boys she knew would be along soon...? |

| If the two young boys got a fright by someone dressed up & having a bit of a laugh, they then could have thought there was a bubbling cauldron & black cat as that's what witchs have with them. The mind adding bits to try and make sense of an odd situation? |

Madseller have you posted this story here before, or in the magazine maybe?
I recall reading a near identical story on the board or in the mag, with the possible difference that the witch spoke to the two boys to warn them against mischief-making in graveyards.
My opinion then as now is that this is some sort of entity or tulpa-like thought-form. |

I'm fairly sure it was on here, probably in IHTM maybe even in Minor Strangeness and I drew comparisons with the case of the two boys playing in woods who were warned about a lurking paedo by a huge ginger cat, which someone else likened to Charlie the cat in 70s public safety films.
Limelight it is minorly strange that we joined within a day of each other. Where's Madseller? |

I heard a story years ago when I was in the service about a young "boot" (new guy fresh from boot camp) who'd just arrived at the base. They decided to have some fun with him, so they gave him instructions to drive into town and get a bucket of steam. He grabbed a bucket and jumped into the truck and left. While everyone was getting a good chuckle from this, the guy was actually a local to that area and he knew where he could buy some dry ice. So that's what he did. He filled the bucket with water and just as he got back to base with it he dropped some dry ice into the bucket of water. It bubbled up and produced copious steam and when he showed up with that rig it was HE who had the last laugh! |
