My grandad passed away in March and in his will he left his estate to his 2 daughters; my mum and aunty. He had built his house himself back in 1956 and was very proud of the fact. I had spoken to him in the past about maybe having his house after he was gone and I know that he wanted it to be kept in the family. My wife and I were planning on moving home this summer as we are looking to have a 2nd child and need a bigger house. So, we decided that we would buy my grandad's house, which has 4 bedrooms, from my mum and aunty.
The interior of the house is very dated and needs lots of work doing - we are pretty much gutting it. So I was up there last weekend doing some work on the house, pulling out some built in wardrobes that were in my grandad's old bedroom. I had been listening to the radio whilst I was working and hadn't really thought about my grandad that day. As I was knocking out a dressing table that was built into the middle of the wardrobes, I suddenly had a thought that my grandad had made this table and these wardrobes many years before, and here I was smashing them apart with a lump hammer. It was one of those thoughts that you have in a split second and I literally had it as I was pulling the hammer back to take my next swing. As I brought down the hammer into the side of the dressing table, it jumped partially out of its housing to the side. On my right hand side where the dressing table had been sat against the wardrobe, I saw a passport photo of my grandad on the floor looking back at me.
It struck me how odd it was that I found the photo just a second or two after I had thought about him. I couldn't reach through the gap to get the photo, so I hit the dressing table again and it jumped out further, to reveal a birthday card say next to the photo. As soon as I saw the card I knew that I recognised it. When I opened up the card I saw that it was to my grandad from me.
Now I fully accept that this could be just total coincidence. However, to find the photo and the birthday card right at the moment I was feeling a bit guilty over smashing up what my grandad made was very odd. It felt to me as though it was a message of approval from my grandad. I am not someone that is especially emotional, but I can tell you that it choked me up a bit. |

Thanks.
I should have pointed out that he has 6 grandchildren including myself, so that card could have been from any of us, but it just happened to be one that was from me. |

We have a couple of threads about messages from beyond. I've had a look but can't find the more general ones, although there are specific threads on phone calls from the dead, robins and so on.
One of my favourite subjects. |

| What a nice thing to happen, I'd take it for what it appeared to be, a message of approval. |

Saw my cousin today. He's still upset at the sudden death of his best friend a few months ago.
He said he sat down at a table in the food court and noticed this chap staring at him and it was the spitting image of his friend, and he exchanged a few words with him.
Later he put in his scripts at the chemist and went out to his car and on the radio station where his friend had worked, before they played a record came the message "Thank you---- for playing my new record".
He wondered if it was a message. |

I'll copy my story from the coincidences thread over into here too as it seems a better fit in this thread - although I still think it was just a coincidence.
TommyK13 - your story strikes a chord with mine, in that something had made you think about your Grandad just before you found the photo and card. Had you not had that thought I guess you would have just found the photo and card and thought nothing much more about it than a little reminisce about your Grandad.
Similarly if the waiter had not suddenly just spoken in a real tone that instantly reminded me of my Dad's voice his next words would not have even registered with me as having any meaning.
Now, is it just coincidence that something came up to remind you/turn your thoughts to your Grandad just before you found the photo/card or was it for a reason that you were guided to be thinking of him just as the photo and card appeared?
Very curious even if it is a coincidence!
My story from the 'Coincidences' thread...
| Quote: | One of the more weird things to have happened to me, I'm still putting it down as pure coincidence, but I can see how someone with a different belief system might interpret it...
So, me and my wife-to-be were over in Scotland for the weekend finalising last minute plans and enjoying the Highland Games in the village my family are from. Because our wedding is in September my Mum didn't come up for her usual August holiday but is going up for 2 weeks in September. This is the first time in my life that she hasn't been up for the Games, I've not missed them in 32/33 years - not entirely sure if I first went aged 1 or 2.
Consequently it was a bit of a different feeling weekend, plus my Uncle was in hospital for surgery so he was not about, so maybe thoughts of family were higher in my sub-conscious.
Anyhow, we had gone out for an Indian on the Saturday night and in the restaurant was a woman who, without my glasses on, was the absolute spit of my Mum - same mannerisms, dress sense, everything. We laughed about it but thought no more of it. With my glasses on she didn't actually look that much like her.
Our waiter came over, tall Indian man, late 50s, Indian accent but with a slight Scottish twang. I don't even recall what he said but just the tone and way he delivered on sentence reminded me exactly of how my Dad spoke. He died in 2005 and we never really had much of a relationship so I rarely, if ever, talk of him to my partner and it is not often he even comes into my mind - there was no bad blood, he was just disinterested and I was unperturbed by his indifference. In this instance though I said to her: "Even though he is Indian that waiter speaks just like my Dad used to..."
A few minutes passed and he had forgotten to bring us our poppadoms, eventually he came over placed them down and apologised for forgetting, then he paused and turned back and said "I'm just getting old..."
At this point my partner says my face went white as a sheet and as he walked away I explained to her that those were the exact last words my Dad ever said to me. He had not been feeling great in the days before he suffered a massive heart attack and on the Saturday I'd dropped him off at the pub, as he struggled to get out the car he made light of his difficulty and said: "I'm just getting old..."
For me, just a very odd coincidence. Had the waiter not spoken in a voice that just suddenly caught me as being that of my Dad I'd not even have registered the words. Strangely, the rest of the evening the waiter sounded like an Indian man. It just seemed to be that one instance where his words came out in the voice of my Dad - as if to bring him into my thoughts - and then the immediate punch of the same words.
Very odd, and I remain unconvinced it is anything more than coincidence. But I'll admit it took me a while to get to sleep that night wondering if I had just been visited with a pre-wedding message.
I've always joked that it'd be the ultimate irony to get more interaction out of him from the other side than I ever did in real life... |
