I joined this forum so i could share this allthough i've been reading FT for a few years.
I recently moved into a brand new flat/apartment in New York City. It is literally brand new we are the first people to live in it. As soon as we moved in strange things started to happen but nothing really what i could write about on here (just both of us seeing a shadowy figure out of the corner of my eye what could be explained by trick of the light for a millisecond etc) then the really starnge thing happened. One morning we woke up to find some numbers written on the wall in the kitchen near where the shadows would be seen. They were not in either my girlfriends writting or mine.
The numbers were 32 21 31 i put the numbers into google and the results that came up were a bible verse (something to do with tax collecters and prostitutes) neither my girlfiend or i are religious and i didn't even know bible verses had numbers (sorry) for any religious people out there.
I've got a picture of the numbers on my my phone (after girlfiend tried cleaning them of but still clearly visible) so if i can work out how to put them on here i will.
I'm from England and have lived in some old houses and never felt/seen anything like this before so any possible explanations would be appreciated i would like to add the only possible non paranormal explanation i can think of is one of the builders writing some measurments on the wall then the paint has worn off somehow to reveal them. Lastly there is no bad atmosphere or ill felling here, quite the opposite it is a really cheerfull place and i have no problem sitting in the dark on my own watching a horror flick. Any comments explanations appreciated.

I don't know what to say, other than the only time I've been in a building where I believed there was something that was actually threatening was when I was in college and I was living in a dorm building that was literally brand new, and had just opened that semester. The only thing I could think at the time was that the land it was built on had been completely unused and kind of in the middle of nothing, and who knows what could have gone on there.

My first marital home was a newly built flat and it too had spookiness.

We'd hear a clock ticking loudly, when the only clock in the place was our small battery-operated alarm, and sometimes there'd be a muffled thump and all the power would briefly go off. Never got to the bottom of either of those little conundrums.

The builder's scribble idea seems possible. I'm always decorating and will often write measurements on the wall where I'm papering. Wink

If this is in New York, was there some old building/s cleared before your apartment was built, Hazi?

Over the years, I've read people reporting new homes as being haunted, not just older ones - houses on new estates on what was agricultural land. Quite a lot of that goes on here, as the town spreads.

Although I am glad you find it a happy place. Living in homes with a bad or uncomfortable/depressing atmosphere isn't pleasant.

We're on West 54th street really central so i'm sure there was something here before, will have to check and we're on 20th floor so will have to check how high previous building was aswell.

I like the theory of the measurements written on the wall, but rather than paint somehow wearing off I'd rather suspect some chemicals in the ink used simply leeched through the paint over a period of time. You'd never scrub that off. If that's what happened you could paint over the area with a primer paint called Kilz, and then paint over that to match the rest of the wall. That should solve the problem.

Yeah, that was one of my first thoughts. Maybe the builder scribbled something on the wall, and the ink has started leaking through as the paint dried out. Emulsion paint eventually loses its opacity and starts to become transparent with age.

Edit: Oops, didn't read far enough ahead to see Old_Shoe's comment re paint...

The only two problems with the ink seeping through the paint theory is that the numbers appeared literally over night and they are at eye level in a prominent place so would have noticed them gradually appearing. And we've only been in the place 2 months so not enough time for the paint to wear off, but thanks for all the suggestions. I will update if anything else happens.

If the ink is from a Sharpie pen (solvent based), it could appear overnight. Sharpies, as you may know, are available almost everywhere, and the ink is guaranteed to be permanent (which it is except on some plastics).

You will need (as stated above) primer to cover it before you attempt to paint the wall, again.
