In recent years, regulation changes have meant strange-looking cars, especially at the front end. The FIA insist on lower noses, they all end up with a step level with the front wheels. They change the rules again, to limit downforce, and we end up with this season's "anteaters". Every rule to slow the cars down results in some of the world's finest engineers trying to make them faster again!

Well, every time they dramatically change the rules, weird looking cars appear. Anyone remember the six-wheeler Tyrrell? Or the really high wings back in the early 70s?

Sooner or later, a common design emerges that looks less weird. But I like weirdness, even in F1 cars. Wink

Was that a car or a bike? I seem to recall Suzuki having Durex branding a few years ago.

Anyway, I think this year's F1 cars will take some getting used to. They range from Ferrari's "dust-buster" front end, through various versions of the "anteater" theme, to Caterham's "Oh my god, what the fuck were they thinking?". Really - take a look at it, it's hideous. Being an awkward sod, of course, I shall therefore be hoping to cheer Caterham on to their first-ever points this year.

The McLaren MP4-29 looks like it was designed by Aardman.

Interesting sound too. Here's a wee sample from testing at Jerez last week. Skip to 14:40 for Kimi's pit entry. Not a lot of anger in the 6 cylinder, but perhaps it'll grow on me when there are 22 of them vying for points.

No comparison at all to the peak aural F1 experience, which is always very emotionally evocative. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeO2q8FzcnM
