Space rock's impact blasted chunks all the way to Britain

Margaret Munro
National Post

Scientists have discovered strange emerald green rock in England that they believe originated in Quebec and was blasted over to Britain by an asteroid or comet that slammed into Earth millions of years ago.

The tiny spherical rocks are so bizarre, and alien to the region near Bristol where they have been found, that geologists say the most likely explanation is they are debris from the Manicouagan crater in northeastern Quebec.

"It seems we've got bits of Canada spread across Britain," said Professor Gordon Walkden, of the University of Aberdeen, lead author on a report on the discovery in the journal Science today.

The Manicouagan crater is one of the largest and oldest on Earth.
Scientists believe the crater, which measures 70 kilometres across, was created when an asteroid or comet barreled in from space 214 million years ago and smashed into northeastern Quebec with the force of 40 million Hiroshima bombs...

Canada was indeed nestled up against Europe at that time. But thanks to continental drift, you don't need a meteor impact to find foreign soil right at home. With the continents knocking together with some regularity, you can visit other continents by simply going to the beach. In fact, you might not have to go that far.

After reading a "Zippy the Pinhead" cartoon which stated that bits of Connecticutt were African soil, I did some time-consuming research on the Internet and eventually found the rock in question. Indeed, there are large bits of North America left behind in Europe (most of Highland Scotland), great strips of Africa in New England and Eastern Canada, etc.

In fact, the similarity of rocks and fossils across impossible stretches of Ocean, plus the observation that the continents appear to fit together like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, are what led to Wegener's theory of continental drift in the first place.

If you can't afford a fishing trip to Labrador, try the Scottish Highlands--looks pretty much the same, and the rock under your feet probably matches perfectly the rock under some salmon stream three or four thousand miles to the West.

I guess thats why some people think that there might have been civilizations long ago that "now" show no trace of ever existing..the city discovered over 2000 ft below the surface of the florida striaghts on the west end of Cuba" could be over 65 million years old..and sunk when the asteriod hit the yucatan pennisula...

Aw, Ruff, c'mon. I'm only saying that a lost atlantis type situation is more likely than a city built underwater by aliens....

It's obvious the dolphins built it for shelter when it's raining. They're not stupid you know.
