Amazon turns red over sex link
In a incident that highlights the pitfalls of online recommendation systems, Amazon.com on Friday removed a link to a sex manual that appeared next to a listing for a spiritual guide by well-known Christian televangelist Pat Robertson.
The two titles were temporarily linked as a result of technology that tracks and displays lists of merchandise perused and purchased by Amazon visitors. Such promotions appear below the main description for products under the title, "Customers who shopped for this item also shopped for these items." Amazon's automated results for Robertson's "Six Steps to Spiritual Revival" included a second title by Robertson as well as a book about anal sex for men. --Stefanie Olsen, Special to ZDNet News ...END QUOTE...now aint that a hoot!!!!

I've just begun to notice the foul stench of hardcore Christian Evangelism in the U.K. (well in Kent). Billboards proclaiming: "miracles, faith, come and see" next to the picture of some smug looking cheesemonger. Fortunately they seem to be located in Essex.
My own dislikes aside, i don't know much about Pat Robertson.
Is he one of those chaps who blames Homosexuals/Jews/Blacks/junkies etc. for the ills of the world and then sleeps with goats etc.? (I'm guessing not accusing here - he may be a lovely chap - but i'm aware of those typs who are not). IF so i'm not suprised that anyone who hates that hard (or folllows someone who does) may harbour dodgy secrets or be in denial about their own sexuality...
funy tho'
(Something Swaggart - is that one of those kindly old right-wing chaps you have shepherding the masses over the pond - or is my memory failing me?) |

Ol' Pat started something in the eighties called the Christian Coalition to get evangelicals involved in politics. Previously most wouldn't as it was seen as "worldly". It became quite powerfull for a while, though it is moribund at the moment, I think.
He carries a very hard brand of fundamentalist Baptist theology, and his TV program The 700 Club is seen by many millions every day. He comes across as your avuncular uncle, has had women, black co-hosts. But definitely hard-line.
The only "morals" issues I've ever heard about him were rumors of diamond dealings with brutal African dictators. But I don't think anything ever came of it, at least legally. I can try and source that if you want.

| he also ran for president once, not long ago. His son (looks just like him) is following in his shoes "on the 700 club" and as said above ,"is seen by millions". he also is a former US Marine. And very out spoken on the evils of "islam religion" saying that in his studies "they want us dead, period". He was in an up-roar recently after 9/11 (with agreeing with Jerry farwell) that it all came crashing down because of : liberials, homosexuals , and the decadence of society moving away from the christian faith in america, blah ,blah , blah.. |

Yes I too have been one of the 'millions' who have watched "the 700 Club." On TBN (Natch!). That we can all remember the name of the programme, attests to its popularity and influence, I think.
I was just amazed that he'd got on to European TV at all! 'Aaaarrrgh! It's 'im!' I thought when I first saw him.
As to his 'Moral Coalition' being moribund. Didn't they win? I know, from watching said station, that many of the Bible humpers are well pleased with GW.

Sure Andro, just two small points: Are you intentionally conflating Pat's Christian Coalition with Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority, which was about a decade earlier? I know, it's mostly just semantics.
And yes, the Radical Religous Right folk are very much a force in US politics, and GWBJR is definitely their man. I just meant the CC as an organization per se, was basically non-existent. But there are plenty of others to fill the void, that's for sure. |

What I find most enlightening about the whole thing is that it's an automated link. It tracks peoples buying habits. At least one person (perhaps more than one) bought Pat Robertson's book as well as the anal sex one.
The mind boggles.

| Definitely not intentionally. Thanks for clarifying. |
