Why has nobody (that I know of anyway) pointed out that the word 'Arcadia' can be broken down into two latin words - 'Arca' and 'Dia'
The noun arca can be taken as "Wealth" and dia can mean "A long time." Et can be "also" as well as "even."
Thus the phrase "Et in Arcadia ego" could be translated (if you take the word arcadia to be "arca dia" to:
"I am also rich for a long time."
Hmm. |

So part of the Rennes mystery is the phrase "I am also rich for a long time".
This isn't a clue to a location; this is another interpretation. The stone which gave the basis for this painting might (in a real long shot) be a triangulaton point but if you wanted to keep a treasure secret, you wouldn't give obvious clues to its location.
You either hide something or you don't! |

Perhaps the wealth implied is that of knowledge? Knowledge of a secret perhaps? |

"Dia" is a Greek preposition with the basic meaning "through" -- were you mistaking it for "diu" perhaps?
Also, "in arca diu ego" would look more like "I'm dead for a long time" -- "arca" is literally "box", and it's used of coffins as well as of money-boxes. |

Dia - a day long. Also "a long time" figuratively.
Arca does indeed mean "a box", "a coffer", also "wealth." |

So if it means
| Quote: | | "I am also rich for a long time." |
Who is it referring to?
What are some of the other interpretations of the phrase? |

| If that phrase had appeared anywhere else you wouldn't be interpreting it that way, though. You're applying what you know, or want to be the case, on the meaning. |

Et in Arcadia Ego - has a simple meaning - it is written on a tomb because it means "I (death) am present even in paradise".
As far as I know the tomb itself was dynamited by the farmer on who's land it was because he was sick of people trespassing on his fields trying to break into it. |

I know. And a tomb has a simple purpose - to put dead people in.
It was just a thought. Like the thoughts that have led people to spend years postulising links to the parchments of Abbe Bigou and pointers to features in the landscape from clues on the tomb and so on.
