This is a fake, though it was never intended as a hoax. The image in question is scanned from a book called Charlie White published in 2001 by Goliath. It contains a number of excellent photographic essays produced by capable special effects technicians that tell macabre and disturbing stories. This one is one of a series entitled "In a Matter of Days".

The creature was designed by renown creature designer Jordu Schell with assistance by Mario Torres and Mark Villialobos and was shot in either LA or Pasadena. The photographer was Craig Ashby. Extras were provided by Cameo Casting.

As cool as the image is, it is actually illegal to exhibit it without the permission of Goliath, so it should probably be taken down.

Hope this clears things up. Sorry to disappoint you guys.

Kudos to Snowman X for nailing it!

Looks like Charlie White is a photographer that works with props to make disturbing images:

Easy to be wise after the fact i know, but it certainly looked fake to me.

Case closed anyway as the chaps above have pointed out.

The seriously strange issue here, however, is the shocking presence of closet Iron Maiden fans here on the message board! omg

Its been a while...
Love is a razor and I walked the line on that silver blade,
Slept in the dust with his daughter, her eyes red with
the slaughter of innocence.
But I will pray for her,
I will call her name out loud.
I would bleed for her,
If only I could see her now...

I have to admit my dog analysis was somewhat flawed. (I even said so in the original post.) I was trying to work out what could be that size with that kind of dentition, as South American cats don't tend to get that big. (Then again, as I've already proven on this thread, what the hell do I know?)

I admit that I didn't even really notice the snout and the lack of prominence. My bad.

Still, good to see that if you don't know something, you just need to ask the right people the question. (Although it could be argued that Goldstein lucked out on this one.)

Iron Maiden evoques quite a lot of Fortean images, don't you think?

Actually, it looks about the right size for a jaguar skull. But it clearly is a fake. Thanks for the Charlie White links - quite a Fortean artist! I wonder if he was an influence on Peter Jackson?

Oh yeah, and i *knew* there was an album cover that the orcs with chains through their faces in PJ's LOTR reminded me of...

Yes, without a shadow of a doubt it's a digitally manipulated image, "'shop"ped or otherwise. Having done many photo manips myself, it's clear that the colours on the head are simple background samples (to maintain ambience) and the boy on the right and his stick are both additions to the original photo. It's a nice attempt, but pretty blatant digital trickery.

When I saw the chupa head I was instantly struck by the similarities.

I'm sure it's been discussed a time or two somewhere on the Fortean Times boards, but I don't have the time to look for any specific threads at the moment. You should be able to see the picture here:

http://www.cyberspaceorbit.com/cavelf.jpg

Apparently it's appeared in a few publications and was thought by some to be an authentic photograph of some sort of "demon," hopping along the walls of a cave (helped along by a wild story or two). I'll admit, the image is quite striking, and I was even taken in by it's magic for a time (In fact I used to have a picture of it sitting on my desk!) but it's supposed to have turned out to be nothing but a carving in some sort of English attraction called "Crystal Caves," or something along those lines, in Cheddar.
