This affable TV show is set in a secret town inhabited by America’s most brilliant scientists, all working on fantastical futuristic projects for the government. These have a remarkable tendency to cock up, meaning that the world / universe keeps lurching towards accidental apocalypse, endangered by an army of clones, a rift in space-time, a reactivated Cold War death ray or genetic hybrid plants with pollen that turns you mad. In each case, it’s up to a non-science geek, Sheriff Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson) – a ‘regular guy’ who stumbled across the town after breaking down while escorting his troublesome runaway daughter home – to save the world. Colin Ferguson is a hugely sympathetic lead, and lends the show much of its warmth, but the rest of the characters – like a pretty gun-toting deputy sheriff, a mysterious and manipulative psychotherapist, and an outdoorsy Aussie cryptozoologist – also have a great cartoon-like appeal. They make doing battle with out-of-control science and impending cosmic catastrophe seem like a whole lot of fun.
To coincide with the release of the DVD, we're running a competition to give away copies of the boxset, IQ tests and an outdoor iPod speaker. For your chance to win, go to the thread in the announcements section of the forum and describe your ideal genius town.
